LONG BEACH, CA — Gordon L. Leis, 80, of Long Beach, CA, formerly of Lockport, NY, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2012. He was born in Lockport on February 13, 1932, son of the late John and Mary (Witkop) Leis.
He graduated from Lockport High School in 1949, and in 1951 enlisted in the Air Force. He was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base in Geneva, NY, Lowry AFB in Denver, CO, MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL. At college he majored in sociology, which prepared him to be a Professor in Sociology at Long Beach University.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Catherine (Dolan) Leis from Scotland, who met Gordon in London, England, and were united in marriage in 1958. She is now in a nursing home in Long Beach. Also survived by son, Colin Leis; daughter, Tracey (James) Nelson, both in California. He was predeceased by son, Kevin Leis. He is survived by three granddaughters; one grandson; two brothers, John (Shirley) Leis; Robert (Patricia) Leis, both in Tennessee; one sister, Eleanor (John) Dunkelberger in Lockport.
A memorial service will be held later this month in Long Beach.
