SAFETY HARBOR, FL — Robert W. Leis, 81, of Sevierville, TN, formerly of Lockport, NY, walked through the gates of Heaven to meet his Lord Jesus Christ on April 11, 2012. He was born in Lockport, NY on February 17, 1931, son of the late John and Mary (Witkop) Leis.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Patricia (Clark) Leis, who provided compassionate and constant care since his illness began in 2005. Robert was the loving father of two daughters, Vicki (Keith) Smith of Lockport, NY and Julie (Kevin) Szatkowski of Safety Harbor, FL. He is survived by four granddaughters and one grandson, Melanie Smith of Washington, DC, Valerie Smith of Lockport, NY, and Jamilyn, Kameron and Kaitlyn Szatkowski of Safety Harbor, FL. He is survived by one brother, John (Shirley) Leis of Sevierville, TN; one sister, Eleanor (John) Dunkelberger of Lockport, NY; one sister-in-law, Catherine Leis of Long Beach, CA; several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother, Gordon L. Leis, who died just eight days before his own passing.
Robert, also known as Bob, graduated from Lockport High School in 1948. In 1949 he enlisted in the US Army serving until 1952. While in the army he was stationed on the Pacific Island of Guam and was able to travel to Tokyo, Japan. Bob worked at Guterl Special Steel from 1952 until their closing in 1983. He then went to work for the Town of Lockport Water Department until he moved to Tennessee in 1995. During his retirement in Tennessee he enjoyed working at Dollywood. Bob was a member of the American Legion and First Baptist Church in Sevierville, TN. Bob enjoyed reading, bowling, baseball, boxing, watching football and spending time with his family and friends. His unique sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service in celebration of his life on May 12th, beginning at 10 AM at The Chapel at CrossPoint, 500 CrossPoint Parkway, in Getzville.
