The first woman elected to the
Common Council of Lockport,
Mrs. Alice M. Duffy, 67, of 96 Caledonia
St., died unexpectedly Sunday
evening (Oct. 22, 1961) at
Mount View Hospital where she
had been taken Thursday after
suffering a heart attack.
Born in Lockport, Sept. 24, 1894,
she was the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Barrett.
Mrs. Duffy was the widow of
the-"Duke of Lockport." James
Duffy, former Lockport welterweight
boxer who put the community
on the map with his boxing
prowess in the early 1900's.
When her husband entered the
Veteran's Administration Hospital
in 1958, Mrs. Duffy turned to politics
and was the first woman
elected alderman of the First
Ward, serving two terms. In
1958 and 1959, she was elected to
the County Board of Supervisors
and served on four of its committees,
the judicial, supervisory,
county clerk and equalization.
Mr. and Mrs. Duffy celebrated
their golden wedding anniversary
in 1958 at the hospital where Mr
Duffy died in 1960 after having
been a patient there for nine
years.
Mrs. Duffy had been a mem
ber of the Lockport Business and
Professional Women's Club, Worn
en's Republican Club, the Lock
City Committee, St. Patrick's
Church and the Altar and Rosary
Society and the Ladies of
Charity of that church.
Mrs.' Duffy is survived by a
sister, Mrs. Ceilia Murphy of
Lockport, and several nieces and
nephews.
Friends may call after 7 this
evening at the Haenle Funeral
Home, 230 Jackson St. where funeral
services will be held at
8:30 Thursday morning. A requiem
mass will follow at 9 at St
Patrick's Church.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's
Cemetery.
