Funeral services are scheduled
Wednesday for Johhn V. Bedell. 58, a
Tonawanda restaurant operator who
died yesterday after apparently suffering
a heart attack.
The Tonawanda Fire Departments
first aid squad was called early
yesterday to Mr. Bedell's home at 129
Clinton St. and administered oxygen
to him before he was taken to DeGraff
Memorial Hospital, where he was
pronounced dead on arrival.
Mr. Bedell was president of Bedell's
Candlelight Lounge and Restaurant
Inc., 83 Niagara St. He and his
brother, Ossian. operated the Candlelight
Restaurant and Bedell's Coffee
Shop, 13 Main St. for about 15 years up
until thr.ee years ago when John Bedell
took over the restaurant and Ossian
Bedell assumed control of the coffee
shop operation.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Bedell had
resided in Tonawanda for 50 years. A
1931 graduate of Tonawanda High
School, he managed and owned several
restaurants in Tonawanda before
opening the Main Street coffee shop in
1946.
Mr. Bedell was a member of St.
Francis of Assisi Church, Twin City
Council 413, Knights of Columbus;
National and Western New York
Restaurant Association. Tonawandas
Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club;
Eldredge Club; Elks Lodge 860;
Niagara Hose Company and Tonawanda
Exempt Volunteer Firemen's
Association.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte
Kohl Bedell; a daughter. Mrs
Richard Gunkel of Carson City. Nev.;
two sons. John V. Jr. and Daniel E. of
Tonawanda; a sister, Mrs. George
Leverenz of Wilmington. Del.: another
brother, Robert of Williamsville. and
nine grandchildren.
Prayers will be said at 9 am
Wednesday at John O. Roth Funeral
Home, Morgan and William Streets.
Tonawanda, followed by a Requiem
Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis of
Assisi Church The Rt. Rev. Msgr.
Ralph M. Miller will officiate Burial
will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
