Corning NY Evening Leader - 12/10/1921
Seized. It is believed, with a faint.
ing spell While hunting In the woods
southeast of the city on the slope, of
Spencer Hill yesterday afternoon. Walter
Moore, 27. of Roberts Avenue,
Tuxlll plot, fell and died from exposure.
His lifeless body was found this
nurning in tho woods by his father,
David M. Moore, who had been his
hunting companion yesterday, but who
had become separated from his son.
Walter Moore has been subject to
a peculiar type of seizure ever since
he met with an accident while living
in Hornell five or six years ago. It is
believed that he met with one of these
seizures yesterday afternoon after
following his footsteps towards home at
dusk.
The body lay with the face thrust
against the earth. Coroner Srnith,
who examined the body before it was
disturbed, said that Judging from the
appearance of the body, the illness had
apparently resulted from natural
causes and that death had followed
from exposure.
The blood had gathered in the dead
man's head as it was considerably
lower than his feet In the position in
which the body lay and the complexion
was florid when the body was
located.
No Marks of Violence
The coroner found no marks of violence
of any kind. The dead man's
gun lay near the body the death
seems to have been entirely due to
natural causes, no autopsy will be necessary
and no inquest will be held.
Mr. Moore and his father left their
home yesterday afternoon and went
hunting in the woods along Bailey
Creek on the slope of Spencer Hill.
They became separated during the
course of the afternoon and the
father returned home without the son.
At first nothing was thought of
the matter when the son f a i l e d to put
In an appearance at home early last
evening but when the night was sev-
eral hours old and he had failed to
return , a search was made of the
property to see if by chance he had
stopped into the home of any neigh-
ors. Nothing could be found as to
whereabouts.
The members of the family sat up
l a t e into the night waiting for his return
but no attempt seems to have
been made to search the woods for
Mr. Moore last night.
Early this morning, the father went
to the woods In the vicinity where
t h e pair had been hunting yesterday.
After tramping about for an hour or
mors he came upon the body. He returned
at once to the city and made
a report of his discovery but when he
attempted to lead persons to t h e point
where the body had been found he
was unable to do so.
Mr. Moore's health Is not robust
and as he had become exhausted as
a result of his long tramps of yesterday
and today he had to abandon his
second search for the body this morning.
In the emergency Boy Scouts of
the Presbyterian church under the
direction of Harry Mathews, scout
master of Troop 9, took up t h e search
with the result that the boys located
the body shortly before noon. The report
of their find was made to police
headquarters by S. H. Clark of Tuxlll
avenue.
Scouts Work Is Praised
Coroner Smith this afternoon paid
a tribute to the work done by the
Scouts In locating the body. The boys
who were building a camp along the
river today were hastily gotten to-
gether and sent Into the vicinity
where they located the body In short
order.
