WOLCOTT, CT — Joseph A. Rogan, 89, of Wolcott, CT, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
He was born on July 26, 1924 to Ruth (Weaver, Rogan) Arthis and Austin Rogan. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School Class of 1943, and served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. Joe was first stationed in England and was involved with the D-Day landing and World War II campaigns in France, Belgium and Germany. Joe married Margaret Berds in l949. He worked at Kimberly Clark until its closing and then retired from Union Carbide. He was a member of St. Teresa's Church in Niagara Falls and then St. Pius X in Wolcott.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Janet Tynan (William) with whom he made his home for the last three years; his granddaughter, Jessica Tynan-Lynch (Charles) and great-granddaughters, Charlotte Tynan Lynch and Mae Rogan Lynch, all of Wolcott, CT. He also leaves his step-sister, Mary Ann Meyers of Florida and step-brother, James Arthis of New Jersey. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Fergen; step-father, George Arthis and step-brother, George Arthis.
He resided in Niagara Falls, NY for 86 years. Joe volunteered at Memorial Medical Center on the coffee cart for many years and was a member of the Retired Men's Club, local senior centers and travel groups. He was able to travel across the country with his friends and accompanied his family on numerous trips and cruises to Ireland, Alaska, the Mediterranean and, most notably, he attended the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. He was also a lawn bowler and wood carver. Affectionately known as "Great" to his two great-granddaughters, he was an avid reader and crossword puzzle solver almost until the end of his life.
Woodtick Memorial has been entrusted with the arrangements. A funeral Mass was held for Joseph at St. Pius X Church in Wolcott, CT. Entombment will take place on Saturday, February 1st, at 11 AM in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lewiston, NY, next to his wife of 48 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1075 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT 06708; the Friends of the Niagara Falls Public Library, 1425 Main St., Niagara Falls, NY 14305; or the Wolcott Public Library, 469 Bound Line Road, Wolcott, CT 06716.
