Pfc. Leonard Carl Billings, 18,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Billings
of 65 Watrous Street, Perry, died
in the Walter Reed Hospital in
Washington, D. C, on Wednesday
morning, July 4th, at 2:25 o'clock.
Pfc. Billings enlisted in the Air
Corps In March, 1950, and was
stationed at Shepard Air Force
Base, San Antonio, Texas. In September
of the same year, while
engaged in a football game at the
base, he received an injury to the
left knee cap which developed into
a bone tumor. On October 25, 1950
his left leg was amputated at mid °
thigh, in the Burke Army Hospital
in San Antonio. In November he
was transferred to Walter Reed
Hospital In Washington. His parents
drove there in June to bring
him home for a 30-day furlough.
A few days after arriving here he
was in severe pain and was admitted
to the Warsaw hospital.
They at once notified Walter Reed
Hospital, and orders were sent immediately
for his return there. He
was home just 10 days and returned
to Buffalo by ambulance
and on to Washington by plane.
After arriving there he became
steadily worse until his death.
Leonard Carl Billings was born
on Sept. 15, 1932, a son of Frank
and Clara Close Billings. His home
has always been in Perry. He attended
Perry High School and was
a member of the Episcopal Church.
Besides his parents he is survived
by three brothers, Robert,
Donald and Burdette, all of Perry,
and three sisters, Mrs. Charles
Kilner (Lorraine) of Batavia, Mrs.
Thomas Cowle (Myrtle) and Mrs.
Kenneth Lounsbury (Phyllis) both
of Perry.
Military funeral services were
held from the Eaton Funeral Home
on Monday afternoon at 2.30, with
Rev. M. A. Garland officiating.
Burial was in Grace Cemetery,
Castile.
Twenty men were sent here
from Sampson Air Base to serve
as pall bearers and firing squad.
