Dr. John A.R. Marino MD, 86 of Lewiston, NY went to the Lord on Friday, January 19, 2018. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Louis D. and Mary E. (Piela) Marino, Sr. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1949. He married Michelene (D’Amico) on September 11, 1954.
John received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Buffalo in 1953. He obtained his masters in Biology from UB shortly thereafter, and then attended the University of Ottawa Medical School where he specialized in Internal Medicine graduating first in his class. In 1958, he completed his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, NY. In 1959, he moved his family to Detroit, Michigan to complete his residency in Internal Medicine at the Henry Ford Clinic. Dr. Marino went on to complete another residency at the Veterans Hospital in Buffalo from July of 1960 to June of 1962. He became a practicing physician at both Memorial Medical Center in Niagara Falls, NY and St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, NY until his retirement in 2000. After joining Memorial Medical Center in 1962 he held a number of leadership posts at the hospital, including Chief of the Department of Medicine and Head of the Division of Diabetes. He was elected President of the Medical Staff in 1984.
Dr. Marino was also one of the founders of the Niagara Cup Classic, the Medical Center Foundation’s annual charity golf tournament, winning the foursome of the first tournament in 1992. He co-chaired the event in 1994 and 1995 and served on the event’s steering committee for many years, later in an honorary capacity. He received a lifetime honorary entry into the tournament in 2000 and was a member of both the Niagara Falls Country Club and the Niagara Frontier Country Club.
Dr. Marino was also an avid basketball player and played many years in the municipal league. He played for the University of Ottawa Medical School basketball team, and the Henry Ford Clinic basketball team.
His true passion was for the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club. Dr. Marino was an alumnus, as well as a board member since 1970. He served on the Personnel Committee and helped organize the Golf Tournament, which he worked for over 25 years. He also served on the Board of Directors for over 45 years.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his children, Lou (Rochelle) Marino, Michele (Michael) DeGregorio, Danielle (Gilbert Cavaliero) Marino, and was predeceased by one son, John D. (Lisa) Marino; his grandchildren, Justin (Shaun) Marino, Erin Marino, Janelle DeGregorio, Angelo (Larissa Wagner) DeGregorio, Angelo (Erica) Mollo, & Emilio (Tina) Mollo; his siblings, Joanne Marino McGreevy, Esq., Louis D. (Linda) Marino, Jr., Richard J. (Barbara) Marino, Lucia (Raymond) McGovern, Mary Jo (Joe) Meli; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Diana (Richard) Roehner, Bruno (late Judith) Bartolomei, as well as seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his sister Dolores Marino, brother in law Louis Lipa, mother in law and father in law Angelo (Agnes) D’Amico.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 23rd from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M. at Forestview Church of God, 1250 Saunders Settlement Rd, Niagara Falls, NY 14305, where funeral services will follow at 10:30 A.M. with his Pastor Ron Maines officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Josephs Cemetery.
