LaVerne "Hub" E. Strassburg

NORTH TONAWANDA — LaVerne "Hub" E. Strassburg, a longtime resident of North Tonawanda, died on Thursday, June 14, 2012 in Northgate Manor. He was 91.
He was born in North Tonawanda, NY on July 3, 1920, the son of Jesse and Ella M. (Werth) Strassburg. Attending North Tonawanda schools, he was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School. He worked for Stoeckel Builders for a short time before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II. He was honorably discharged as Sergeant with the 395th Bomb Group in November of 1945.
Hub worked for many years with the North Tonawanda Department of Public Works, retiring from the engineering department. He was a longtime member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, serving on its cemetery board and a member of Gratwick Hose Fire Company for over 50 years. An avid sports lover, he was a NY Yankees' fan and helped coach little league baseball.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille (Kupp) Strassburg; four children, Jan (Paul) Kolbe of North Tonawanda, James (Melanie) Strassburg of Cleveland, TN, Lynne (Terry) Tavano of Bryan, TX, and Susan (Leon) Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda; a brother, Robert (Margaret) Strassburg of North Tonawanda; nine grandchildren, Mark (Rachelle) Kolbe, Jennifer (Jamie) Elmer, Jaime (Michael) Davidson, Erin Strassburg, Thomas Zalewski and Rebecca Zalewski, Ann (Owen) DiVico, Sara Szczerbinski and John Szczerbinski; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Monday from 4-8 PM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls. Funeral services Tuesday 10:30 AM in St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1135 Oliver Street, North Tonawanda. The interment will be private in St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery. Flowers graciously declined. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the church in his memory.
