- March 16, 2004 Thomas James Niland Jr., 83, formerly of Syracuse, passed away Tuesday at the home of his daughter Nancy Whiteley in Osterville, Mass. He was a graduate and class president of Canisius College Class of 1947. A World War II Armyveteran, he served in the Battle of the Bulge with the 101st Airborne and received the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Mr. Niland was the Athletic Director at Le Moyne College for 45 years and basketball coach for 27 years. His wife of 49 years, Phyllis Metzloff Niland, passed away in 1995. He is survived by: seven children, Thomas III (Elizabeth) Niland of Syracuse, Dennis E. (Anne) Niland of Syracuse, Nancy (Craig) Whiteley of Osterville, Mass., Susan (Armand) Perry of Fishkill, NY, John M. (Marilyn) Niland of Fayetteville, Patrick A. Niland of Syracuse, Jeffery J. (Grace) Niland of Hartford, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph (Lois) Niland of Buffalo, Michael (Jean) Niland of Grand Island; a sister Ina (Jerome) O'Hanlon of Geneva, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:15 a.m. Saturday in the Pirro & Sons Funeral Home and 9 a.m. in St. Daniel's Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m., 514 Turtle St., Syracuse. Contributions may be made to: Thomas J.
