Helene A. Lindhurst
Helped husband manage farms
CAMBRIA - Helene A. Lindhurst, 100, of Ridge Road, died Thursday (July 28,1988) at home. Born in Cambria, she moved to Lewiston after her marriage to the late Herman J. Lindhurst. She assisted her husband in managing fruit farms for the J.W.H. Kelly Farms for 40 years until the farm was sold. In the Tri-County News, a Lockport area newpaper (sic), in January 1986, she reminisced: "Saturday was chicken day," Mrs. Lindhurst said. "I always prepared four for the Kelly's Sunday dinner and two for our family. The peaches were graded by another crew of workers, and then loaded in Lewiston and shipped green as grass to Pittsburgh. We had lots of hobos, and I never refused them something to eat." She and her husband moved to Ransomville after retiring in 1951. They lived there for 15 years until her husband's death in 1965, when she moved back to Cambria. Mrs. Lindhurst was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church at North Ridge, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was also a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She is survived by a son, Arnold Lindhurst of Lewiston; a daughter, Marion Schendel of Cambria; and five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lindhurst was the daughter of the late Frederick and Whilhelmina (sic) (Erck) Jacobs and sister of the late Rachel Seefeldt, Bertha Simmons, Emma Strablow, Ella Dobbertean Sack, Frank Jacobs, William Jacobs and Albert Jacobs. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Hardison Funeral Homes Inc., 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter Lutheran Church at North Ridge, Church Street. The Rev. David Musall will conduct. Burial will be in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Cambria. Contributions to St. Peter Lutheran Church or the Cambria Volunteer Fire Co. Ambulance Fund are acceptable as tribute.
