Dies in Crash

RANSOMVILLE - A 20-year-old nurse's aide, en route to work at Ransomville General Hospital, was killed Tuesday when the car in which she was riding slammed into a telephone pole in Balmer Road near here. Miss Betty Helen Werth, 20, of 2683 Lockport Rd., Sanborn, was pronounced dead on arrival at Ransomville General Hospital. She suffered internal injuries, a fractured skull and broken neck.
The driver, John W. Sagar. 19, of 1788 Balmer Rd., Ransomville, was charged by sheriff's deputies with driving at a speed not reasonable or prudent. He was treated for shock at the hospital. This was the 10th traffic fatality in county roads this year compared to 21, this time last year.
Asked For Ride
Authorities said Miss Werth had asked Sagar for a ride to work because she had car trouble. Deputies Clayton Schultz, Louis Reale and Sgt. James Faery said Sagar told them he was driving east in Balmer Road and was late for work. He is an orderly at the Ransomville hospital. The report said Sagar was driving 70 miles an hour when he stepped on the brakes to a slow down. The car went out of control, careened across the road, struck the utility pole and ended up in a plowed field. The mishap occurred about 3:05 p.m.
Miss Werth was a graduate of St. Peter's elementary day school and Niagara Wheatfield Central High School.
Survivors Listed
Miss Werth's survivors include her parents, Edwin and Hulda Werth, 2683 Lockport Road, Sanborn. and a brother, Robert Werth, Niagara Falls. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Pike and Jones Funeral Home and at 2:30 at 51. Peter's Lutheran Church, Walmore. Rev. Donald G. Rehkopf will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
