- Albert L. Strasburg, a longtime resident of Niagara Falls and Grand Island, in Winter Haven, FL, at the age of 88. He was born to Albert F. Strasburg and Clara A. (Schultz) in the LaSalle section of the city.
Albert graduated from LaSalle Senior High School and served a total of seven years in two different branches of the military, first as an infantryman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 174th Infantry Regiment, NY National Guard and then as a damage controlman aboard the U.S. Navy's USS Burdo (APD-133) and USS Minos (ARL-14). His fondest memories were the Mediterranean cruises aboard Burdo where he and the crew trained Naval Academy midshipmen and French Foreign Legion commandos.
Albert was employed at Industrial Welding on Buffalo Ave. for over 20 years and then opened his own welding and fabricating business in the early 1970's located first on Packard Rd., then later Niagara Falls Blvd. Albert was an avid golfer and bowler. His business, Strasburg Welding and Fabricating, sponsored a Friday night bowling league for many years at the old Beverley Lanes on Military Road.
He was active in veterans' organizations, including the AMVETS and American Legion. His association with the Legion spanned over 70 years where he served in a variety of leadership positions at Post 1451 in Niagara Wheatfield, including as post Commander. Albert was a member of Zion Evangelical and Grace Lutheran churches in LaSalle, and Grace Lutheran Church in Winter Haven, FL.
He is predeceased by his parents; wives, Donna Marie (Carli) and Sharon (Blake); seven siblings, Charles, Robert, Donald, William, Richard, John "Jack," and Joanne Milleville; and step-daughters, Wendy Foster and Christine Palmatier.
Surviving are daughters, Marla (Richard) Crawford of Grand Island and Janine (John) Nymann of Young, AZ; sons, Albert of Tonto Basin, AZ, Donald of Winter Haven, FL, and John (Luisa) of Naples, FL; step-daughters, Sherry (Ken) Snyder of Hamburg and Deanna Palmatier of Winter Haven, FL; grandchildren, Donna Strasburg of Charleston, SC, Marissa (Brendan) Neill of Buffalo, Ian Shepard and Isaac Snyder, both of Hamburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Monday 5-8 PM at the Kaiser Funeral Home, 1950 Whitehaven Rd., Grand Island, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 AM. I
