WHEATFIELD - Paul F. Mehls, a former railroad car inspector, died Friday at home after a brief illness. He was 87.
A Niagara Falls native, he graduated from Trott Vocational High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He worked 43 years for Consolidated Rail Corp. and its predecessor railroads, retiring in 1978.
Mr. Mehls was an active member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Niagara Falls. He was a former council president, sang in the choir, taught adult Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent.
He also belonged to a retired men's singing group, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and collected railroad memorabilia.
His first wife, the former Grace Boulden, died in 1988.
He is survived by his second wife of 10 years, the former Polly A. Fisher; two sons, Richard of Gasport and David of Franklintown, Pa.; two daughters, Karen Jackson of York Springs, Pa., and Linda Kurzik of York, Pa.; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 18th Street and Cleveland Avenue, Niagara Falls. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.
