Edison C. Stieg, 85, a well-known musician who played several instruments and directed many bands, died Friday (March 23, 2001) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, after a long illness.
Born in Wheatfield, he was an Army veteran of World War II and played in the 174th Infantry Army Band.
He played several instruments and for 35 years directed many bands, including the Bergholz German Band, the Sanborn Volunteer Fire Company Band, the Wheatfield Community Band and the Wheatfield Senior Citizens Band.
On several occasions he traveled with his bands to Germany, Hawaii, California and Florida.
He was a 50-year member of Adams Fire Company and was a member of Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion, and St. John Lutheran Church.
His wife, the former Verna Wollenberg, died in 1995.
Survivors include his fiancee, Gracia Sweeney Docenko; two stepdaughters, Marilyn Updegraff of Fairport and Donna Burolla of Ontario, N.Y.; and a stepson, Kenneth May of Sanborn.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. John Lutheran Church, Ward Road and Niagara Falls Boulevard. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
