LOCKPORT-A prominent
Lockport contractor and real
estate developer,' George C.
Bewley, 80,, of 590 East Ave.,
died today (Nov. 3, 1960) at
the Nob Hill Nursing Home.
Mr. Bewley, born in Lockport
Sept. 30, 1880, was son
of the late Joseph and Mary
-Howe-Bewley.-He-was-well
known as builder of the Bewley
Building and for development
of fashionable Carlisle
Gardens, a Town of Lockport
residential area.
Mr. Bewley started in the
canning business with three
hrothers in 1907 when . they
formed the Lockport Canning
Co. in 1916, Mr. Bewley began
real estate development.
He entered the construction
business in 1919 and built the
first bituminous paving material
plant in this area in 1932.
He was also president of the
Lockport Stone Co., suppliers
of crushed stone.
Mr. Bewley built the Bewley
building for his/brother,
the late Richard Bewley, for
whom it was named. He was
also-brother of the late State
Sen, William Bewley.
Mr. Bewley's wife, the former
Ida Winters, died in 1954.
He was a former member of
the Lockport Board of Education,
"former warden in the
Christ Episcopal Church and
former member of the
of directors. He retired
in 1951.
Survivors i n c l u d e two
daughters, Mrs. James. B. Culvertson
and Miss Margaret A.
Bewley, both of Lockport; a
son, George W. Bewley, Lockport;
a sister, Mrs. C. Irving
Fisher. L o c k p o r t ; and six
grandchidlren.
Friends may call today and
Friday at the home of George
W. Bewley. 1 A m b l e s i de
Drive. Burial office will be
held at C h r i s t Episcopal
Church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The. Rt. Rev. Lauriston L.
Scafe. bishop of the Episcopal
Diocese, of Western New
York, will officiate. Burial
will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
