two sons, Frank, of Alaska, and George
of this city, also his mother. Mrs. Mary
A Allen, and three brothers. Clair, Fred
and Alexander and one sister, Mrs. Joseph
Dorgan, all of this city. Funeral will
be held from lhe home of Mrs. Joseph
Dorgan, 115 Sixth street, Monday morn-
ing at 8:30 o'clock and from St. Mary's
church at 9 o'clock. Burial in Riverdale
cemetery.

A general contractor for many
years, Fred J Allen, 85, of 756
Fourth street, died today in Mt. St,
Mary's hospital after being in failing
health for the. last year.
Bora In LeWlsfon, Mr. Allen
moved, to this city 70 years ago.
He was president of the Allen
Smith Contracting company, which
he organized In 1911. This company
constructed several business,
financial and other large buildings :
here, including Mt St. Mary's hospital,
St. Mary's Lyceum, Tenth
street school, Our Lady of the
Rosary church and school, Our
Lady of Lebanon church, Lutheran
church, Bergholtz, and the Cataract
National bank.
With a brother, A. Frank.Allen
and Robert Young, he also was responsible
for building the Imperial
hotel in 1890 s and remodeling the
Temperance hotel, the Converse
hotel, the International hotel and
the Cataract house. The group also
constructed more than 400°homes,
in this city.
Mr. Allen was president of the
Ayers Witmer Lumber company until
he retired in 1950, and' was one
of its founders. He was one of
the founders of the Cataract National
bank and a former director.
He was a past grand-knight of
Council 247, Knights of Columbus,
a lifelong communicant of St. Mary's
of the Cataract church, a member
of the Elks lodge and the Loyal Order
of Moose.- He also served in
the Cataract Engine and Hose company
of the Volunteer Fire department
and was a member of the
board of directors of the Exempt
Firemen's association at the time
his death.
His wife, Jennie Allen, died July
2, 1948. He is survived by five
daughters, Mrs. Grace Brett, Mrs.
Ella Skimin, Mrs. Camillus Rosa and
Mrs. Jeanette Tyrell, all of this city,
and Mrs. Alma McDougall, Charleston,
W. Va.; one sister, Mrs. Martha
Dorgan; one brother, Alexander J.
Allen, both of this city, and 11
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday
at 8:30 a.m. at the home, 756
Fourth street, and at 9 o'clock at
St. Mary's of the Cataract church.
Interment will be in Gate of Heaven
cemetery.

Clair Michael Allen..widely known
retired building contractor, of 743
Fifteenth street, died In Mount St.
Mary's hospital this morning after
a brief illness. He was 72 years old.
Mr. Allen was born in Model City,
son of the late Alphonse and Mary
Clair Allen. He had lived in this
city 60 years and for many years
was a member of the Allen-Smith
Contracting company. He built
many of the city's important build-
ings, including Mount St. Mary's
hospital and a large number of
homes. He was a member of the Ni-
agara Falls Exempt Firemen's asso-
ciation and had a host of friends
throughout the community. His wife,
Mrs. Catherine Allen, died four
years ago.
He is survived- by two sons. Fred
J. Allen, of Washington; D. C , and
Harold J. Allen, of Cincinnati; five
daughters, Mrs. Catherine Frank, of
Niagara Falls, Ont., and Mrs. Margaret
McGreevy, Mrs.Edith House,
Mrs. Mildred McSpadden and Miss
Marion Allen, of this city; two brothers,
Fred J. Allen and Alexander J.
Allen, of this city, and a sister, Mrs.
Martha Dorgan, also of this city.
Six grandchildren also survive.
The funeral will be held from the
family home at 8.30 am. Saturday
with services at St. Joseph's church

A pioneer Niagara Falls building contractor, fire-
man and former city official died Thursday night (March
1, 1962). in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital, one of the many
buildings in this city he helped to construct.
Alexander J. Allen, 91 of 722 Maple Ave. was
born in the village of Lewiston on Oct. 3, 1870. He was
the father-in-law of John J. (Taps) Gallagher, Niagara
University basketball coach.
Mr. Allen moved to this city
in August 1894, and joined
Local 575, United Brotherhood
of Carpenters and Joiners.
On Jan. 1, 1896, he became
treasurer and chairman of the
board of trustees of the union.
In 1899, when Local 322 was
formed here, Mr. Allen became
this local's first president.
Was Early Volunteer
Mr. Allen was one of the
last surviving members of the
Cataract E n g i n e Hose Co.,
formed before the City of Niagara
Falls was incorporated.
Mr. Allen was one of the
first class of pupils at St.
Mary's School, which opened
in 1883.
In 1912, Mr. Allen, together
with John and Charles Smith,
formed the Allen-Smith Construction
Co., which built Mt.
St. Mary's Hospital. St. Mary's
lyceum, 10th Street School
and many factory buildings.
Their firm remodeled the
International Hotel, Cataract
House, the Imperial and Temperance
Hotels, and Our Lady
of Lebanon Church.
Served on Council
Mr. Allen became interested
in politics in the early
1890s. In 1899, he was named
fire commissioner by the late
Mayor John M. Hancock. He
later served two consecutive
terms as alderman-at-large.
In 1918, Mr. Allen was candidate
for president of City
Council on the People's Party
ticket. The party won, but a
few days before Mr. Allen
and the other candidates were
to take office, the Court of
Appeals reversed A decision
of a lower court and the city
Switched to the city manager
form of government. Mr. Allen
did not take office, but
was ° appointed superintend,
ont of public service under
Mayor Fra,nk Thompson.
In 1893, Mr. Allen was also
active in the formation of
the Exempt Firemen's Association,
an organization he
later headed as president for
five years.
Held State Firemen's Post
For more than half a century,
Mr. Allen also was a
member of the New York
State and Western New York
Volunteer Firemen's Associations.
He served as president
of the Western New York
association and was its secretary
for 28 years.
He was also a past president
of the Niagara County Volunteer
Firemen's Association
In 1912, Mr. Allen married
Ellen Timmons of this city.
Mrs. Allen died in 1937.
Mr. Allen ran for city council
in 1939 and was defeated;
He served for more than
20 years as a Republican city
committeeman.
In 1956, as the oldest surviving
past-president of the
Western New York State Volunteer
Firemen's Association,
he was named a trustee of
the Firemen's Home at Hud
son, N.Y.
Survived by Daughter
Surviving are his daughter,
Mrs. Gallagher and a granddaughter,
Mary Ellen Gallagher,
both of this city.

A POPULAR young Niagara Falls
man, Eugene Dorgan. 23-yearold
son of Mrs. Martha Dorgan,
of 415 Sixth street, lost his life 15
years ago today In an automobile
accident In the Lockport road near
Lockport. He was riding with Alfred
Russell, 28, of Lockport. when
the car missed a turn in the road
during a heavy rainstorm and over
tu r n e d against a boulder. A passing
motorist found both men unconscious
in the wreckage. Dorgan
died while being rushed to a hos-
pital but Russell escaped with ml-
nor though painful Injuries. Young
Dorgan, a member of a widely
known family, was employed as a
repair man by the Niagara Elec-
tric Service corporation. Besides _
his mother. he was survived by four
brothers, Clair J., Allen J-. Alex-
ander F. and Gerald, and a sister,
j a n e .

Jackie was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1949 and from D'Youville College with a B.A. in 1953. She earned a Master of Arts and Teaching degree from Niagara University in 1973. Jackie worked for many years as an executive secretary at Nuttall Gear Corporation. In later years, she worked at the Niagara Falls Public Library. A lifelong Catholic, she especially enjoyed laughing with her family, reading books, listening to music, watching movies, knitting, and holding babies.

Clarence Allen House, 14-year-old
son of Lourn and Edith Allen House,
1307 Fifteenth street, died at the family
home on Sunday, following a few
days illness. Services were held at the
home yesterday afternoon and inter-
ment was made in Grimsby, Ont.,
where the Rev. Father O'Neill offi-
ciated at the grace. The city health
department reported that death was
due to infantile paralysis.
The boy was an honor student at
Gaskill Junion high school and would
have graduated this year. He was
president of his class last semester and
was very popular with students, mem-
bers of the faculty and friends. Be-
sides his parents, he is survived by
his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Clair
Allen and Mrs. Minnie Radell.
