Clifford William Hummel, “Servant of the Lord”age 70, of Rochester, NY formerly of North Tonawanda. Cliff peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on January 15th, 2018. He is now with his Lord and Savior. Clifford was born on January 27, 1947 in Bristol, CT. Son of Henry and Elsie (Litke) Hummel. Husband of Lynne Hummel. Father of Todd, Chris and Lori Hummel. Grandfather to Jaxon, Jordan and Anna Hummel. Brother of Edith Frechette, Etta Robillard, Elaine Morey, and Erma Kravecs. Beloved Brother-in-law, Uncle to many, Principal to thousands and Teacher to many more.
Cliff grew up in Terryville, CT. He participated in many sports including baseball, football, swimming and track. He was very active in the Boy Scouts and achieved the goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.
Cliff started his life of servanthood by attending Concordia College (Bronxville and River Forest) graduating in 1970 with a degree in Education. Christian Education was His Business…He had a huge heart for Christian education. Cliff married his partner in love and service Lynne (Binkley) on August 1st, 1970. He began his teaching career at Martin Luther Christian School in New Jersey. Cliff and Lynne continued their journey at St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School in North Tonawanda, New York. While at St. Matthew, Cliff served as a teacher for many years and eventually became Principal. The servant journey continued at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in Hilton, New York where he served as Principal. Cliff’s heart for service did not end with retirement. He continued to serve his Lord in any and every capacity he could until his final days.
Cliff had a lifelong passion for sports. He played, coached and officiated for many years impacting the lives of all he interacted with along the way. Cliff loved his grandchildren, watching them play and perform, golfing with his boys, wood working, gardening, and finding garage sale treasures with Lynne.
A short memorial service will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hilton, NY on Thursday January 18th at 11am for those in the Rochester area.
Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd. in North Tonawanda, NY on Thursday January 18th from 5-8 pm and Friday January 19th from 3-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 am from First Trinity Lutheran Church,1570 Niagara Falls Blvd, Tonawanda.
