Anna Frick Whitmer (from published story by son Christian F. WHITMER), was born May 18, 1819, the only child of Christian FRICK and Elizabeth LONG FRICK, Their first farm was on a farm of several hundred acres at Skinnersville what is known now as Wolf's Mills, in the town of Amherst, Erie County, NY. Which was purchased by her grandfather (CHRISTIAN H> FRICK) about the year 1807. When she was about five years old the family moved to another farm purchased by Mr. Frick of the Holland Land Co. and situated on the south side of now what is known as Main St., about two miles west of Williamsville. This is where she married Tobias Witmer and raised her five sons and nine daughters, the farm is now know as Audubon Terrace South.

At the time of her death 11 of the 14 children are still living.

INTERESTING SKETCH OF HER LIFE.

Mrs. Anna Witmer, daughter and only child of CHRISTIAN FRICK and ELIZABETH LONG, and widow of TOBIAS WIITMER (who died Aug. 14, 1897), was born at Skinnersville, now commonly known as Wolfs Mill, in the town of AMHERST, Erie County, NY., May 18, 1819, and died at the Witmer homestead where she had lived for eighty-five consecutive years, Sept. 14, 1908.
About the year 1828, her father purchased of the Holland Land Company by "Article," 136 acres on the south side of Main Street, two miles west of Williamsville, the present WITMER homestead; and moved there with his family. The premises were at that time mostly dense forest which was being slashed, burned or being converted into charcoal; and the subject of this sketch spent many a day in childhood making miniature charcoal pits within sight of what is now Main Street, but at which time was a corduroy road made over a swampy ground. Her father built the house in which she lived for 85 years, in which she was married , as were all her daughters; and which her parents, two of her daughters, her husband and she herself died. In this house also in 1887 was celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of her marriage in the presence of a large company of friends, relatives, children, grand-children of whom there were twenty three living then, and among the guest a number of those present at her marriage fifty years ago , including the original bridesmaid and groomsman.
She was married November 16, 1887. Her husband TOBIAS WITMER, was born in the town of Niagara, about 3 1/2 miles northeast of the falls. His father Abraham WITMER, emigrated from Pennsylvania and built the house, still standing, where his family was born and reared. Tobias WITMER was a civil engineer, always actively employed. When the call came for volunteers to defend the Union, Mr. Witmer and his eldest son Christian F. WITMER responded and went to the front in the engineering service and continued until the restoration of peace. During their absence Mrs. Witmer evidenced
her patience by sustaining for three years the burdens of management of the household and farm, and the same day they were taking part in the battle of Fredericksburg, her daughter Clara was born and received the second name of Fredericka in honor of that event.
Mrs. WITMER was eminently a home keeper. The achievements of her life were all comprised within the realm where woman is divinely ordained to reign. She was the mother of an unusually large family, all of whom were brought up under her wise training to be honorable and useful members of society.
She was noted for her unvaryingly even temper, cheerful disposition, good sense, charity and hospitality. She was always hopeful and courageous, looking on the bright side and seeing the best instead of the worst.

RANSOMVILLE, April 7-Mrs. Frank Canfield Sr., received word last week of the
death of her brother Christian Witmer who died in Highland, CA. He
was a Civil War veteran serving in the 10th New York Cavalry in the same
company with Mr. Alexander Irish of this town. Mr. Witmer was in his 91st
year.

the death of Christian Martin Witmer,
which occurred at his home in High-
land, Calif on Mar. 21. Mr. Witmer
was a native of the town of Niagara
and a Civil War veteran. He was a
son of the late David Witmer and
Fanny Martin Witmer and was born
Apr. 29. 1841, in the old Witmer
Road on the south side of the.
Lockport road, just east of the Tus-
arora road.
During the early part of the Civil
Was, Christian Martin Witmer enlisted
in the 10th New York Cavalry regi-
ment and served to the end of the war
as a bugler. It was said of him that
bore a charmed life for, although
a horse was shot from under him
in three different engagements, the
the battle of Gettysburg, he es
caped unharmed.
Upon his return to the Niagara dls
trict after the war he managed the
Witmer homestead farm for some years
and then moved with his family to
Redlands, Calif., and finally to High-
lands, Calif. His wife and a daughter
died several years ago. Mr. Witmer is
survived by a widowed daughter, Mrs.
Marie Slack, Highland. Calif. He had
many relatives and friends in this lo-
cation. A cousin, Christian Frick Wit-
mer, Willlamsville, N. Y., also survives.
He was 92 years old and also a Civil
Service veteran.

Her education was begun in the little frame school house then located across the road from the family home and completed in Williamsville Classical Institute, which at the time was in prosperous condition, and in which she subsequently served as one of their teachers.
Teaching was her life work and her services in that capacity were always in demand. She organized the Eggertsville singing class which to this day (1923) observes annual reunions, and was a member of Auld Land Syne Club.

Christian F. Witmer, 99, died Thursday night at his home in 179 Cayuga St.
after an illness of several weeks.
Mr.Witmer, a member of a pioneer Amherst family homesteaded in the area where the
Snyder section subsequently was developed. His father, Tobias Witmer, one of the first engineers
and surveyors in Amherst, went to war with his son when President Lincoln
called for volunteers. they served the 50th New York Engineering Division."

I was born April 11, 1840, Previous to reaching my majority I was engaged mostly on work on the farm and attending school, and assisting my father in making surveys. My first venture in the way of business for myself was teaching the public school in what was known as the "Good District" in the town of Clarence for the winter term of 1860 - 1861.
At the close of the school term I took a course in Bryant and Stratton Merchantile College in Buffalo, graduating in the spring of 1862.
Enlisted in the 50th N.Y. Volunteers Engineers, August 22, 1862 and was honorably dischardged from the army service at the close of the War. The next few years were devoted to teaching schools during the winter in Levanworth, KS, and Easton Missouri, and on government surveys in the western part of Kansas, during the summer.
Those were interesting times for me as you may judge from the fact that my flagman, John Roach, a Cavalryman was killed by Roman Noses' band of Cheyenne Indians while we were engaged in locating a township line on the plains.
In 1868, I returned to New York State and took over my fathers business of surveying and insurance. I married Mary S. COTTON of Elma, Sept. 04, 1878. Two sons and three daughters were born of this union. Daughter Grace, born June 24, 1879, and died Sept. 01, 1916. There survive, sons Ralph, with two grandchildren.

During the War (Civil) he spent several years in Virginia and Texas in thr employ of the U.S. Commissary Department. Next he was employed several years as a salesman at Las Vegas, New Mexico, and returning to New York State, married Carrie URBAN of Pine Hill. He served many years in the Urban mills as a cashier and later established and conducted a Real Estate and insurance business in Buffalo. He died suddenly Dec. 26, 1898. the family resided at 458 Cresent Ave. Buffalo, Erie County, NY in 1923.

Her memory was remarkable. She could give the date of birth of any member of the family at any time when asked. She died in the family home June 17, 1899

(Oct. 17,1968) in Meyer Memorial
Hospital, Buffalo, after a
lengthy illness.
Mr. Schmitt owned a farm on
Military Road until his retirement
15 years ago, when he
moved to Newfane.
He is survived by a daughter,

(Lewiston) - Dorothy C. Baker, age 91, formerly of Balmer Rd., in Ransomville, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 in Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, after a brief illness.Dorothy was born February 15, 1917 in the Town of Porter, the daughter of the late Frank and Jessie (Hamblin) Canfield and was a lifelong resident until 2005, when she moved to Lewiston. She was a graduate of Wilson High School and the Kelly Business School in Niagara Falls. On October 19, 1940 she married Howard “Red” L. Baker. Dorothy had worked as a secretary to loan officers in the Power City Trust Bank for six years and in 1942 she joined her husband to develop the Baker Farms business in Ransomville, and become the office manager.She was a lifelong active member of the Ransomville United Methodist Church. Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and embroidering.Her husband predeceased her on November 12, 1997. She is survived by her children, Ann (James) Samplinski of Grand Island, Erie County, NY, Katherine (J. LEWISTON — Douglas Canfield, age 85, of Ransomville, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston.

Doug was born May 9, 1928 in the Town of Porter, NY, the son of the late Frank and Jessie (Hamblin) Canfield and was a 1945 graduate of Wilson High School. He established the Douglas Canfield Farm in Ransomville and had operated it continually until his untimely death. Besides being a milk producer, he took his fruits and vegetables to the Buffalo, Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda markets. Doug was a member of the Niagara County Milk Producers Co-Op, a member of the Welch's National Grape Co-Op since 1957, the Niagara County Farm Bureau, the Cornell Cooperative Extension, and served on the Town of Porter Planning Board. He attended the Ransomville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed square dancing and family functions.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Sanger) Canfield, whom he married October 25, 1952; his children, Frank Canfield of Ransomville, Kim (John) Coney of Youngstown, and Kirk (Mary) Canfield of Wilson; his grandchildren, Kyle, Greg, Marc and Caleb Canfield, Colleen (Christopher) Brown, Joshua (Kim) and Aaron (Melissa) Coney, Matthew and Paul Canfield; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Louis, Donald, Carl and James Canfield; and a sister, Dorothy Baker.

Investigators yesterday found
evidence of other previously un
reported fires at the site of a fa-
tal fire in the Town of Tona-
wanda.
In their continuing investigation
into yesterday's death of
Mrs. Marjorie a. Ryckman, 46,
of 204 Thorncliff Road, alone
inside her home,, Town police
indicated that evidence found
thus far appeared to rule out
foul play by an intruder.
On a stairway leading to the
basement, an empty benzine
can was discovered. This was
in an area where there was no
fire. and a short distance from
a chair in the fire area there
was a quart can of charcoal
lighter fluid.
In the basement part of the
house, bags containing burned
personal items also were dis-
covered.
Three Brighton fire fighters
had to kick open a door of the
1-1/2 story frame house, where
Mrs.. Ryckman's body was
found shortly after 7:20 a.m.,
sprawled over a cedar chest
and almost in reach of the front
door.
Police disclosed that an autop-
sy performed at the Erie
County morgue indicated that
Mrs. Ryckman apparently had
died of asphyxiation.
"At this point," Det. Capt.
Jack Morris said, "results of
laboratory tests are not yet
available. But we are led to
believe this death was ac-
cidental and not by foul play.
There were no bruises on the
dead woman's body."
Police and firemen said the
head and upper part of the body
were "badly burned."
The fire itself broke out in a
small alcove on the south side of
the house at the living room
corner. The cedar chest was
located about three feet from
the front door.
Brighton Fire Chief James A.
Mooney has not yet listed a
cause of the fire that resulted
in Mrs. Wyckman's death and
$2,500 damage to her home.
Arson Dets. Kenneth A. Swee-
ney and Louis H. O'Quinn how-
ever, examined the contents of
the cedar chest which was
partially filled with brown
paper soaked in "what smelled
like benzine" to the officers.
A silver Zippo lighter in open
position was atop the brown
paper. There was some scorch-
ing on the inside walls of the
chest. An overstuffed chair
that had been pushed away from
the chest was partially burned.
But inspection of other parts
of the Ryckman house re-
vealed what appeared to be
evidence of earlier fires. The
fatal fire was confined to the
main floor of the Ryckman
house.
In the basement were three
brown paper bags. These
contained a jewerly box, a
Bible, a family ledger, a scrap-
book and personal items.
While the contents of the bags
were partially burned, the bags
were not burned in any way.
The items burned, investiga-
tors revealed, apparently were
tied in with a happier period of
the dead woman's life.
Lawrence Ryckman, 1000
West Ave., Buffalo, Mrs.
Ryckman's husband, said the
couple had been married about
20 years but had been separated
seven months.
The fire in which she died was
reported by Mrs. Edward S.
Coia, a next-door neighbor at
198 Thorncliff Road. On arrival
of the Brighton fire company,
fire fighters Walter G. Byers,
Ronald Arnow and Richard
Cinelle had to kick in the front
door of the house where smoke
was dense in the first floor.
Mrs. Ryckman was the
former Marjorie A. Witmer,
born Aug., 20, 1923 at Williams-
ville. In addition to her hus-
band, she is survived by a
brother, Robert Witmer and
two sisters, Mrs. Wallace
Pauley and Mrs. Milton Killian.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m.

John T. Witmer, a retired structural and aerospace engineer and Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, died Tuesday in his Alden home after a lengthy illness. He was 81.

A Buffalo native, Mr. Witmer grew up in Williamsville and was a graduate of Williamsville High School. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he also was an instructor and head of the Structural Model Laboratory.

During his career, he participated in more than 1,400 projects, including pollution control, harnessing tidal power, cooling systems for nuclear and coal-fired power generation plants, portable radar towers, as well as several bridges throughout Western New York and suspension bridges in Cuyahoga National Park in Ohio.

As an aerospace engineer with Bell Aerosystems for many years, he designed spacecraft heat shields for re-entry, the precursors to systems used on space shuttles. He also worked for other engineering concerns and as a consultant, retiring in the mid-1990s.

Mr. Witmer was a descendant of Tobias Witmer, a surveyor for the Holland Land County, during the early 19th century.

During World War II, Mr. Witmer served in the Army Air Forces' 765th Bombardment Squadron in Italy as a bomb sight mechanic. He rose to the rank of corporal.

Mr. Witmer was active in community affairs and served as chairman of the Village of Alden Planning Board for 27 years. He also was town engineer for five years.

Mr. Witmer and his wife of 58 years, the former Marilyn "Lynn" Booth, were active members of Amherst Dance Club for 25 years and served on the board of directors for 12 years. They were also actively involved with the Edelweiss Ski Touring Club for 25 years, traveling extensively throughout the United States and abroad.

Mr. Witmer's other interests included environmental conservation, ballroom dancing, cross-country skiing, gardening and bridge.

He enjoyed corresponding on issues and current events with The Buffalo News and Alden Advertiser. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, John of Carlsbad, Calif., Michael of Pomona, Calif., and Christopher of Tokyo; three daughters, Pamela Mason of Glennville, Pa., Jennifer Norris of Alden and Danielle Garas of Clarence; a brother, Walter of East Aurora; 21 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Buhr, Jr. on February 10, 1945 at the Ridge Road Union Church in Ridgewood, NY. Mr. Buhr died July 26, 1992. She and her husband owned and operated the Newroyal Farms in Gasport. Helen was a member of Ridgewood Bible Church and had a lifetime involvement with the 4-H Club. She enjoyed gardening. Helen had lived in Gasport the past 61 years, previously of Lockport. Helen is survived by her children, Alan (Karen) Buhr of Gasport, Marilee (Milton) Merle of Attica, Dennis (Janice) Buhr of Lockport, Timothy (Deborah) Buhr of Lockport and Philip (Tammy) Buhr of Saxomburg, PA; sister of Robert (Nancy) Schmitt of Lockport and Howard Schmitt of Leesburg, FL. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Robert D. Schmitt, age 86, of Lockport, entered into rest on Monday, December 10, 2012 at Odd Fellow and Rebekah Health Care Facility. Born on March 7, 1926 in Lockport, Robert is the son of Daniel and Hope (Whitman) Schmitt.
Robert graduated from Lockport High School in 1943. He married Nancy MacEvoy on April 10, 1948. They had been married for 64 years. Robert was owner and partner in Newroyal Farms, a dairy and fruit farm, in Wrights Corners. A lifetime member of Ridgewood Bible Church, Robert served in many offices including the church treasurer. He was also a member of the Newfane Board of Education for 10 years in the 1960's. He enjoyed woodworking and made many items for family, friends and the church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy. Dear father of Kathleen (Richard) McIntosh of Lockport, Daniel (Lilly) Schmitt of Lockport, Emily (Norman) Atwater of Barker, Thomas (Lisa) Schmitt of Belmont, David (Theresa) Schmitt of Lockport and Nathan (Crystal) Schmitt of Akron. Brother of the late Helen Buhr and Howard Schmitt; 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive Robert.

He was born in Lockport, NY, on August 13, 1927, the son of the late Daniel and Hope Whitman Schmitt. Howard married Annegene Young November 10, 1951 in West Somerset Baptist Church. She died September 21, 1999. He worked for Gurtell Steel in Lockport as a cold rold operator, retiring in 1984 after 26 years of service. Howard and his wife moved to Florida in 1985 coming from Wrights Corners. Exempt member and past trustee of Wrights Corners Fire Company. Past trustee of Wrights Corners Presbyterian Church and past Asst. Scout Master for Troop 40 in Wrights Corners. Father of Stephen H. Schmitt of Wrights Corners, James J.
