Everett W. Smith. Sr., 31. of
304-1/2 N. Jay Street, Rome, was
killed Thursday, Nov. 15, when
his^car collided with the tractor
part of a tractor-trailer on the
Rome-Oriskany Road, two miles
east of Stanwix.
The victim, who was Oneida
County's 25th traffic fatality this
year, was alone in his 1949 twodoor
sedan, as it headed east towards
Oriskany about 11:00 p.m.
Thursday night. Deputy Sheriffs
Donald ,Tulley and Stanley Kolasz
said the mishap with the vehicle
driven by Thomas Campbell, 37,
of 329 Middler Ave., Syracuse, occurred
on an upgrade and that
the Smith car was on the wrong
side of the road.
According to their report, the
victim's auto crossed ihe highway
and struck the tractor-truck just
back of" the cab towards the rear
wheels, then continued past the
point of impact 217 feet, and In
so doing recrossed the highway.
It stopped on the."road's south
shoulder. The 'westbound truck
went 191 feet following" the collision.
Its drive shaft was found
50 feet from the point-of impact
and rear wheels, also torn loose,
were found 134 feet from the same
spot
Campbell, who' was driving a
1955 machine belonging to General
Expressway, Syracuse, was taken
to Rome Hospital, where he was
reported in good condition.
Mr. Smith was born in Oriskany
on Feb. 5, 1925, son of William
and Theresa Beasock Smith. He
was educated in Oriskany Central
School and served during World
War H in. France and Wales for
two and a half years.
On September 6, 1947 in St
Peter's Church in Oriskany, he
married the former ElnoraA. Colp,
who survives. He had resided in
Oriskany, where he was employed
by the Oriskany Malleable Iron
Works since 1941, and moved to
Rome four years ago. He was a
member of St. Peter's Episcopal
Church in Oriskany.
Surviving besides his wife are
his parents in Oriskany, and his
grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Beasock. North Tonawanda, N. Y.;
two sons, Charles E. and Everett
W. Smith. Jr.. at home; three sisters.
Mrs. James Ernewein, Rome,
Mrs. Oliver Thaver and Mrs. Edith
Reitter, Oriskany. .
Funeral services were held Tuesday
at the Funeral Home of Griffin
& Aldridge, with the Rev. William
T Sherwood, rector of St.
Peter's Episcopal Church, Oriskany,
officiating. Burial was in
Oriskany.
