Coroner enquires into auto death of little boy
North Tonawanda, Sept. 6 - Accompanied by State Trooper J. S. Cole, Coroner J. E. Helwig today visited the scene of the fatal accident that resulted in the death of Clyde Cozad, six years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cozad, when run down by an automobile driven by Richard E. Keingenberg of Niagara Falls on the Ward Road near St. Johnsburg yesterday afternoon. The officers took measurements and questioned a number of school children and residents in the vicinity as to circumstances connected with the case. Some of them corroborated the statement of the driver that the boy ran across the highway in front of his car, but the boy's mother told The Courier-Express representative that her son was standing in the driveway in front of his home when struck and carried 40 feet along the highway. Dr. Helwig said that he will hold an inquest before rendering a verdict. The boy's funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence. Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery on the Niagara Falls Boulevard. The Rev. Paul Fretthold of St. Mark's Evangelical Church, Washington Street, will officiate. Besides the parents, a brother, Paul, and two sisters, Ruth and Natalie, survive.

He married the late Gwendolyn (Walters) Durow on July 11, 1959. They have resided in the Lyndonville and Medina area since 1972.
Don served in the US Army from 1960-1966, retired from Monroe Electronics, Inc. (1997), and was self-employed up until 2018. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Lockport, served as a member of the Lyndonville Lions Club, participated in the Special Friends program, Albion, NY, was a Nuisance Control Officer, and served as a teacher/mentor at youth trapper training camps.
Don is survived by his five children, Stephanie O'Brien, Virginia, Julie (Joseph) Hess, Lyndonville, Robert (Marianne) Durow, Batavia, Nancy (Paul) Fordham, Clyde, and Susan Durow, Lyndonville; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother and two sisters. He was predeceased by two grandsons and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM, Sunday, July 21, 2019, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 4169 Church Road, Lockport. The family will begin receiving guests/condolences at 2:30 PM.

Carol A. Stewart (Blank), age 67, of Pekin, was called unexpectedly to her heavenly home on Friday, August 29, 2008 in Mount St. Mary s Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in North Tonawanda, NY on May 21, 1941 to the late Wilbur and Dorothea (Durow) Blank. Carol is a graduate of Wilson High School, class of 1959. A longtime member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Pekin, she is a former member of Tri-Community Ambulance Service, Inc., serving for 15 years. Her hobbies included painting, playing guitar and she played in several small bands. Survivors include her husband, Russell Stewart. They were united in marriage February 27, 1960; three sons, Brian Stewart of Sanborn, Steven (Deborah) Stewart and Kevin Stewart, both of Ransomville; a brother, Clifford (Jacqueline) Blank of Stafford, NY; seven grandchildren Jerad, Shawn, Kyle, Kaylee, Jessica, Angela, and Jonathan; and a great-granddaughter, Allison. Bruce Frederick Herman, age 77, of North Tonawanda, went to be with his Lord, May 5, 2022. Bruce was a U.S. Army veteran. He had retired from the Niagara Wheatfield School District. He was an avid gardener, he loved sharing garden knowledge and his plants. He loved reading, traveling, fishing and the beach. He was a volunteer at the North Tonawanda Botanical Gardens. Steven R. Stewart, age 54 of Ransomville NY, died unexpectedly on Wednesday March 30, 2016 at his residence.


Steven was born March 9, 1962 in North Tonawanda, NY, the son of the late Russell and Carol (Blank) Stewart and was a1978 graduate of Niagara Wheatfield High School. For the past year he was employed as a tow motor operator by Excel in Lockport. Previously, Steven was an operator at Wendt’s Dairy in Niagara Falls for 30 years. He married Deborah (Cobo) Stewart on August 10, 1997 and they have lived in Ransomville since 2001.


Steven was a lifetime member of the NRA and a former member of the Pekin Volunteer Fire Company. He also was an avid hunter.


He is survived by his wife, Deborah; a daughter, Kaylee Stewart of Wilson; two brothers, Brian and Kevin Stewart both of Ransomville; and his mother and father in law, Dolly and David Cobo.


Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville on Saturday, April 2, from 1- 4 pm. Funeral Services will begin at 4:00 pm in the funeral home, with the Rev. EAST AURORA — Randy Dean Mellenthine, age 58, of East Aurora, formerly of North Tonawanda, unexpectedly, December 20, 2012 in Buffalo Mercy Hospital. Randy worked as a bartender and waiter for many local restaurants in Western New York. He loved music and was a triple drummer for the Hamburg K Percussion Line.

Beloved husband of Diane (Barrie) Mellenthine; stepfather of William (Anita) Fralick, James Fralick, Michael (Kristen) Fralick and Leah Rammacher; grandfather of Riley, Tristin, Kyran, Taylor, Mikayla and Madison; brother of Douglas (Sherry) Mellenthine of Batavia.
