Alfred D. Ligammari, Sr., 89, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at his residence while under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Andrew "Jack" and Mary (Cumbo) Ligammari.
Alfred was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY and attended local schools. During World War II, he served in the United States Army with the 82nd Engineers Combat Battalion from February 6, 1943 until his honorable discharge on December 21, 1945. He participated in the campaigns of Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland and was awarded a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Croix de Guerre, a Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal among many others. On January 11, 1947, he married Leonora M. (Cerminara) Ligammari at the former Sacred Heart Church in Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Ligammari predeceased him on April 26, 2002. Alfred was a member of the OPCMIA #173 (Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association) with whom he served as secretary-treasurer. During the late 50's, Alfred worked on the Niagara Power Project. Alfred was an avid bowler and golfer. He was a member of the National Bowlers Association, served as an officer for the Niagara Falls Golf Club at Hyde Park Golf Course, where he once aced a hole-in-one, and was a co-founder of the annual Anchovy Invitational Golf Tournament, held annually at HPGC for over thirty years. Golf was his true sports passion. This past summer, Alfred golfed his last few times at Hyde Park with his older brother, Nicholas, and his younger brother, Andrew.
