A 90-year-old former Great
Lakes lumber boat captain.
William H. Booth, yesterday
made his final crossing.
Capt. Booth, w h o , h a d been in
ill health for several weeks as a
result of a broken hip, died in a
Long Island nursing home
where he was convalescing. His
wife died Memorial Day. also
having suffered a broken hip
shortly before her death.
Capt. Booth's death marks the
end of a long line of skippers in
the Booth family. The call of the
sea was also answered by his
father, four brothers and one of
his own sons, who died six years
ago.
A native of Lambton. Ont..
Capt. Booth be-fan his more

Great Lakes skipper shuttling
lumber boats from various
logging ports to North Tona-
wanda when it was the
"Lumber City."
His own ship, "The Hazard."
was retired when he began a
career as captain on lake-going
ships for the Huron-Portland
Cement Co. out of Port Huron.

When he was 65. Capt. Booth
and his son. the late Capt.
Fletcher W. Booth of North
Tonawanda, joined forces to
pilot destroyers and PT boats
from shipyards at the Defoe
Shipbuilding Co., Bay City.
Mich., to the Navy yards in
Chicago for use during World
War II.
Their World War II task
completed. Capt. Fletcher W.
Booth opened the Pilot House
Re s t a u r a n t in Nor th Tona-
wanda. The restaurant still is op-
erated by his widow.
Capt. William H. Booth and
his wife first retired to Saginaw,
Mich., later moving to the home
of a daughter, Mrs. Donald
Hauffe of Baldwin, Long Island.
Besides Mrs. Hauffe, Capt.
Booth is survived by two other
daughters, Mrs. Edward
Snowman of Tonawanda, a
NEWS Advertising Depart-
ment employe, and Mrs. Roy
Larsen of Saginaw Mich., and a
son, William H. Booth Jr. also
of Saginaw.
Arrangements for services
were incomplete today.
