    TOWNSEND-The funeral of Sarah
    Townsend was held Sunday. Nov
    9, 1947, from the Kennedy Funeral
    Home at 4.00 o'clock, the Rev. Stephen
    E. Palmer officiating.
    The bearers were William Townsend,
    Sheldon Townsend, Morley
    Townsend. Ronald Townsend, Linden
    Townsend ad Wallace Jones.
    Interment was ln Glenwood
    cemetery.

    died November 7. 1947. She is the
    mother of Sheldon C. of Detroit;
    Carle ton J. of Buffalo; I. Lester ot
    Barker, and the late Howard C.
    Townsend of Lockport; also sister
    of Mrs. William C. Townsend of
    Lewtston. Friends received at the
    Kennedy Funeral Home, 122 Wal
    nut Street, where the funeral will
    be held Sunday afternoon at 4:00
    o'clock. Interment In Glenwood
    Cemetery.

    LOCKPORT-First president of
    the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's
    association and serving continuously
    up to the hour of his
    death, Howard C. Townsend, 59, who
    for many years conducted a general
    insurance business in Lockport, died
    at 9 o'clock Wednesday evening at
    his home. 145 Locust street, after
    three weeks' Illness with a heart ailment.
    Mr. Townsend, prominent as a
    Mason and a former chairman of
    the Lockport Republican city committee,
    was born in Dickersonvllle,
    N. Y.. Sept. 2, 1884. He attended
    the Dickersonville school and when
    the family removed to Lockport he
    was graduated from Lockport high
    school. After leaving school he ber
    came a reporter on the Xockporx
    Journal, later being elevated to the
    city desk-
    A Republican. Mr. Townsend left
    the newspaper field and was named
    surrogate's clerk and served for three
    years under the late County Judge-
    Surrogate Charles Hickey. He then
    became an insurance agent, establishing
    his own business, which he
    continued until death.
    As a Mason, Mr. Townsend was a
    member of Red Jacket Lodge and
    G e n e s e e Commandery. Knights
    Templar, where Be served as mas-
    ter and commander, respectively.
    He also instiutted Tuscarora Chap-
    ter, Order of DeMolay, in 1925.
    Mr. Townsend was a volunteer fire
    man, first Joining the old Hydrant
    Rose company: Be was a member
    of the Lockport Exempt Volunteer
    Firemen's association, president of
    the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's
    association, treasurer of the
    Western New York Volunteer Firemen's
    association and trustee, of the
    New York State Volunteer Firemen's
    association.
    He served as Niagara county fire
    administrator and was a member of
    the Niagara County Defense council
    and the Nlasara-Erie Defense council.
    He was active to the First Presbyterian
    church, held a life membership
    in Lockport Aerie, F. O.
    Eagles, and was. a former member
    of, the Tuscarora club-
    He served as a Republican committeeman
    of the first district, third
    ward, and in 1930 was elected chairman
    of the city committee.
    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lola
    Steele Townsend; two daughters
    and three sons, Mrs. Wallace M.
    Jones, Mrs. Robert Klrsch and Kneeland
    J. Townsend, Lockport; Private
    First Class William H. Townsend,
    Westover Field, Mass., and
    Sergeant Sheldon C. Townsend,
    George Field, Ill; his mother, Mrs.
    Sarah R. Townsend, Lockport, and
    three brothers, Sheldon C- Townsend,
    Detroit; Charleton J. Townsend,
    Buffalo, and I. Lester Townsend,
    Appleton. N. Y.; also two
    grandchildren. Janella L. Jones and
    Peter Howard Townsend, Lockport.
    Last rites will be held tomorrow
    afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the First
    Presbyterian church. The Rev.
    Stephen Palmer will officiate. Interment
    will be In Glenwood cemetery.
    Delegations are expected to attend
    from practically every volunteer fire
    company in Western New York.
    Town of Niagara fire companies
    were among the most recent which
    Mr. Townsend helped to organize
    and they will be represented by firemen
    and auxiliary members. Firemen
    are asked not to wear uniforms.
