A pioneer resident of the old
First Ward and South Buffalo,
Mrs. Catherine Agnes Roche died
Christmas morning at her home,
158 Pries Ave., after a long illness.
She was 85.
Funeral services will be held at
10 a. m. Wednesday at Holy Family
Church. Her son, the Rev. Edward
L. Roche, pastor of St. Pat-
rick's Church, Belfast, will sing
the mass. Burial will be In Holy
Cross Cemetery.
Born in 1858, Mrs. Roche attended
St. Bridgld's School and
Mercy Academy. She was a parishioner
of Holy Trinity Church
more than 30 years. Her husband,
Patrick J. Roche, a city employe
more than 40 years, died in 1930.
Besides Father Roche, she is survived
by two other sons, William
and John; four daughters. Suiter
Mary Edmunda of the Mercy
Order, Mrs. Daniel Bohen, Mrs
George J. Jackson, Mrs. Francis
Lawrence; two brothers, William
and Thomas Brinkworth, and a
sister. Mrs. Helen Lynch, all of
Buffalo.

Jeremiah F. Brinkworth, 154
Hodge Avenue, died at home about
5 p. m. after an illness of several
weeks. He was 80.
Younger brother Frank G. Brinkworth,
74, of 190 West Utica
Street, a retired carpenter, went
to Jeremiah's home shortly after
and, while sitting on a davenport
talking with friends, collapsed of a
heart attack and died almost Immediately.
Former First Warders
Both brothers, members of an
old first ward family, were born
and reared in Perry Street. Their
father, John, ran a saloon for
many years at 299 Perry Street, a
business which Jeremiah inherited
and operated until his retirement
ten years ago. He also was active
in first ward politics and formerly
belonged to the Catholic Men's
Benevolent Association and the
Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Jeremiah and Frank were educated
at the Christian Brothers'
Institut of old St. Joseph's Cathedral.
After his formal schooling,
Frank took up carpentry and for
more than 25 years did work for
the Barge Canal on construction
and repair work. Then he operated
independently for a long period,
retiring seven years ago.

A double funeral will be held at
9.30 o'clock Saturday at the Hodge
Avenue residence and a half hour
later at St. Joseph's new Cathedral.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Surviving the pair are two brothers,
William If. and Thomas J., and
two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Roche
and Mrs. Helen Lynch. Frank
leaves his wife. Delia; a son, Dennis
J., and four grandchildren.
Jeremiah is survived by a son,
Frank J.; three daughters, Mrs.
Austin McTigue, Mrs. John J.
Quigley and Mrs. James Brinkworth,
and four grandchildren.

John J. Brinkworth, Sr., wellknown
hotel and restaurant operator
and active figure in the local
Democratic organization for many
years, died after a long illness in
his home at 125 Crescent Avenue,
yesterday.
Mr. Brinkworth was a product of
the old first ward. He was born
on August 17, 1866. After attending
St. Brigid's Parochial School,
he was employed for several
years at the Snow Steam &
Pump Works. In the nineties he set
up in business for himself, opening
a tavern in Chicago Street near
Perry Street which he operated for
many years. In 1911, he moved to
Main Street and Humboldt Parkway,
where his place became the
rendezvous of prominent political
lights.
At one time in his political career,
I Mr. Brinkworth was a candidate for
the Democratic nomination for
sheriff. He was market clerk for
the city from 1897 to 1903 and in
1927 and 1928 he served as harbormaster
by appointment of Commissioner
John J. Love. Although he
retired from active business in 1928,
Mr. Brinkworth maintained a keen
interest in the affairs of his party.
He was a member of the Elks,
Orioles, J.E.W.S and the Holy Name
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary
Farmer Brinkworth, a daughter,
Mrs. James P. Sullivan, and two
sons, Thomas J. and John J. Brinkworth,
Jr., who recently was appointed
investigator for the county
beer control board.

well known plumbing contractor,
was probated yesterday in
Surrogate's Court and divided his
estate, valued at $31,000, among
five children. They are Mary Hawkins.
38 Athol St.; John E. Brinkworth,
26 Winter St.; William M.
Brinkworth, Jr., 291 Crestwood
Ave.; James P., Brinkworth, 317
Woodward Ave., and Frank J.
Brinkworth, 245 Elmwood Ave.
The latter was named executor.
Mr. Brinkworth died August 26th.

William M. Brinkworth, 76, for
nearly half a century prominent
in the plumbing and heating business,
died last night in Sisters
Hospital after a short illness. His
home was at 516 Massachusetts
Ave. The time and place of the
funeral will be announced later.
Born In the First Ward, he was
graduated from St. Brigid's School.
Among the work which he supervised
were plumbing and heating
installations in Ellicott Sq., City
Hall, the 65th Armory and other
large structures in Buffalo.
He was appointed by Mayor J.
N. Adam as chairman of the city
examining board of plumbers, a
post which he filled for 12 years.
He was a member of the Knights
of Columbus.
Surviving are one daughter. Mrs.
Charles P. Hawkins, and four sons.

Mrs. Austin C. McTigue, wife
of a Canisius College physics
professor, died Monday in Sisters
Hospital after a bng illness. She
was active in social service work
and politics.
The former Loretta Brinkworth
had been a Democratic committeewoman
for 25 years. She was
a lifelong resident of Buffalo.
Was School Teacher
Mrs. McTigue had been a grade
school teacher as a young woman
and later was a field investigator
for the Buffalo Better Business
Bureau.
After service with the Erie
County Department of Social
Welfare, Mrs. McTigue assisted
during World War I in the sale
of bonds and later in the distribution
of suplus food as a volunteer
worker.
Mrs. McTigue earned merit pins
for volunteer service with the
USO and at Sisters Hospital. She
was a member of the hospital's
Marillac Guild for many years
and has been a member of its
board of directors.
Aided College
During World War II, Mrs. McTigue
and some friends assisted
the Canisius College Physics Department
in the manufacture of
unobtainable equipment for laboratory
instruction of U.S. Army
Air Corps trainees.
Her husband, Dr. McTigue, formally
served as chairman of the
college Physics Department and
is now a professor of Physics
there.
While living at Duke University
I in 1958, she continued her volun
teer work at the Veterans Ad-
ministration Hospitall in Durham,
N.C.
Mrs. McTigue was a member of
the Altar and Rosary Society of
St. Joseph's Cathedral and the
Canisius College Faculty Wives
Associates. She enjoyed design-
ing her own hats.
Funeral Thursday
Surviving in addition to her hus-1
band is a brother, Frank J. Brinkworth
of Buffalo.
Prayers will be said at 8:45
a.m. Thursday in the Killeen Funeral
Home, 615 Elmwood Ave.,
followed by a Solemn Requiem
Mass at 9:15 in St. Joseph's
Cathedral, Delaware and W. Utica.
Murial will be in Mount Calvary

1927, was foreman of plumbing
for five years before becoming
supervisor of plumbing
and heating in 1955.
A lifelong Buffalonian, he was
a member of Local 36, Plumbers
Union, AFL-CIO.
Surviving are his wife, the

Frank J. Brinkworth, 53, a Buffalo
policeman for 28 years, died yesterday
morning at has home. 373 Woodward
Ave. A Washington Station detective,
he was the victim of a heart attack
Rescue Squad 6 was summoned, but
Detective Brinkworth was pronounced
ieatl w i n it arrived.
Prayers will be said at 8.30 a. m.
Saturday at the home and a requiem
mass wul be celebrated at 9.15 oclock
at St Mark's Church. Burial will he in
Mt Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
Mr. Brinkworth was born in Buffalo
July 31. 1898. and joined the department
August 1, 1923, after serving
as an oiler on the Great Lakes.
His first assignment was at the
Franklin Station. On March 24, 1924
Patrolman Brinkworth was promoted
to detective and assigned to the Niagara
Station.
After a second brief assignment as
patrolman. Mr. Brmkworth was promoted
again in February. 1927. to
detective duty. He wag made a detective
sergeant in 1934. but eventually
he was returned to active duty. He
had been assigned to the Washington
Station since February, 1950.
Surviving are his wife, the former
Dorothy S. Smale; a daughter. Miss
Mary Ellen; a son, William M.; a sister.
