John J. Brinkworth, Sr., wellknown
hotel and restaurant operator
and active figure in the local
Democratic organization for many
years, died after a long illness in
his home at 125 Crescent Avenue,
yesterday.
Mr. Brinkworth was a product of
the old first ward. He was born
on August 17, 1866. After attending
St. Brigid's Parochial School,
he was employed for several
years at the Snow Steam &
Pump Works. In the nineties he set
up in business for himself, opening
a tavern in Chicago Street near
Perry Street which he operated for
many years. In 1911, he moved to
Main Street and Humboldt Parkway,
where his place became the
rendezvous of prominent political
lights.
At one time in his political career,
I Mr. Brinkworth was a candidate for
the Democratic nomination for
sheriff. He was market clerk for
the city from 1897 to 1903 and in
1927 and 1928 he served as harbormaster
by appointment of Commissioner
John J. Love. Although he
retired from active business in 1928,
Mr. Brinkworth maintained a keen
interest in the affairs of his party.
He was a member of the Elks,
Orioles, J.E.W.S and the Holy Name
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary
Farmer Brinkworth, a daughter,
Mrs. James P. Sullivan, and two
sons, Thomas J. and John J. Brinkworth,
Jr., who recently was appointed
investigator for the county
beer control board.
