James W. "Jim" Mathew, 88, of West Lafayette, died at 6:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at Indiana Veterans' Home, West Lafayette, Indiana.
He was born June 13, 1921 in Wolcott to the late Oscar Mathew and Ethel Eck Mathew. He married Myress Strantz on Sept. 8, 1953, in Reynolds. She survives.
Also surviving are his children, Ann Marie Bauer of Noblesville, Frank Mathew of Santa Fe, N.M., Mark Mathew (wife: Peggy Conley) and Susan Zita Mathew, both of San Francisco, California and Robin W. Mathew of Lafayette; 9 grandchildren, Heidi Horstman, Seth Mathew, Christina Torres, Nicholas Mathew, Nathan "Paco" Mathew, Timmy Mathew, Danielle Bauer, Jennifer Bauer and Briana Bauer and 1 great-grandchild, Lola Grace Horstman.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Joseph, Maurice "Jack," Irene, Margaret, Dorothy, Helen and Mary.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during World War II.
He was a member of American Legion Post 11 & The Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the St. Boniface Parish. He owned & operated the Country Inn in Wolcott from 1950-1961.
He moved to Lafayette in 1962, where he began Lafayette Beauty Supply which he owned until 1975.
He moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where he was a real estate agent until 1996. He was an avid thoroughbred enthusiast.
