    North Tonawanda NY Evening News

    Vice President Nelson A.-
Rockefeller and a host of dignitaries
    attended funeral services today in
Niagara Falls for former state Senate
    Majority Leader Earl W. Brydges.
    The once powerful Republican
lawmaker died Sunday at the age of 69
after a long bout with cancer.
Brydges served in the Senate for 24
years, before retiring in 1972. As GOP
majority leader from 1967 to 1972, he
was well-known for his quick wit and
    charm in guiding former Governor
    Rockefeller's bills through the Senate.
    State officials attending the
    services; under cold, snowy skies,
    included former Gov. Malcolm Wilson
and most members of the Senate.
Representing Gov. Hugh L. Carey was
    Fabian Palmino
    Brydges' silver-gray coffin was
carried into the 157-yeai-old St. Mary
    of the Cataract Roman Catholic
Church by a number of old friends,
including William E. Miller, who ran
for vice president in 1964 on the
    Republican national ticket.
Wilson eulogized Brydges as "a man
who was true to himself, who alway
    knew where he stood."
    Senate Majority Leader Warren M.
    Anderson Tuesday appointed the entire
membership of the Senate to serve as
a committee to represent that house at
    the funeral.
It is a tradition of the Senate for the
    majority leader to appoint a
    representative committee to attend
    funeral services for a deceased
former member, and it is a mark of
unusual respect for the entire Senate to
    be so designated.
    As Republicn majority leader from
1967 to 1972, Brydges used his gifts as
an orator and parliamentarian, as well
as wit and charm, to guide Rockefeller's
    bills through the Senate.
    Rockefeller called Brydges "an
outstanding leader and a most beloved
figure in the government of New York
State, He was my friend and I mourn
    his death."
    Along with Rockefeller and GOP
    Assembly Speaker Perry B. Duryea
    -now minority leader -he controlled
    all major state legislation.
However, he said he felt he used his
    power as majority leader more
sparingly than any of his predecessors,
    preferring "conference and
    compromise."
A native of Niagara Falls, Brydges
    attended Niagara University and
    graduated from the University of
Buffalo Law School in 1926. p
He suffered a heart attack Jan. 17,
1962, but resumed his legislative duties
    after his recovery.

    Notes:

Richard George Brydges, 83, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 2, at Seaside/Atlantic Shores after a long and courageous bout with illness. He was born on December 31, 1921 to William H. Brydges and Margaret McInerny Brydges of Niagara Falls, New York. He was reared in Big Island, Virginia, graduated from Marcuse High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame, and earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Virginia. For more than 55 years Mr. Brydges practiced law at Virginia Beach, and garnered an impressive reputation as a criminal attorney; "The trial lawyer's ultimate trial lawyer," as one of his colleagues referred to him. "In these days and times when no one wants to litigate, and everybody's happy - or relieved - to settle, Dick was the opposite, champing at the bit to get in front of a judge or jury," one friend said. In the early years, Mr. Brydges would volunteer his services as a court-appointed attorney to gain trial experience, and throughout his career helped those in need pro-bono. "You throw bread on the waters, it will come back ham sandwiches - Smithfield ham," he was fond of saying. He was the defense for a number of high-profile criminal cases, from murder to grand larceny to general "man bites dog" mayhem. One of the first to put him on the map was a case involving a young sailor who confessed to strangling a woman found dead in the hotel room they shared. Pictures of the man were found in the trashcan on an undeveloped roll of film. Mr. Brydges not only got the young man acquitted, but successfully sued True Detective Magazine for their damning feature story "I Have My Killer On Film" and won a then-unprecedented million-dollar settlement. Since that time, Mr. Brydges has won the impossible, "unwin-able" case time and time again, through grit, humor, articulation and sheer moxie ("but little having to do with the letter of the law in and of itself," he would often say with a wink and a smile). He received several awards over the years including the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia State Bar Association, and most recently he was honored by the Virginia Beach Bar Association with The Brydges-Russo Distinguished Service Award, which the Bar graciously named after himself and his dear friend and Notre Dame classmate, the Honorable Philip L. Russo. Mr. Brydges served in many civic capacities over the years, including as Virginia State Highway Commissioner, president of the Virginia Beach Bar Association, a guest lecturer at distinguished Virginia law schools, and Commissioner in Chancery for the Circuit Court of Virginia Beach. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery First Cavalry Division in both the Philippines and Occupied Japan. He is survived by his children, Suzanne Baker, Hugh and Maggie Brydges; his grandchildren, Suzanne and Joshua Kennedy, Maggie Dickerson, Melissa and Jennifer Lockwood; his great-grandchild, Patrick "Paddy" Kennedy; his sons-in-law, Norman Baker and Jim Lockwood; his niece and nephew, Ester and Jim Brydges; his mother-in-law, Miriam Brenaman; and his sisters-in-law, Julia and Miriam Brenaman. Mr. Brydges was married to the late Anne Miller of Bedford, Virginia, and the late Anne Brenaman of Richmond, Virginia. The family is extremely grateful for the legions of friends and family who have offered their support and love, shared stories and laughter, and also for the superlative and compassionate care he received from all his physicians, nurses and aids, notably those at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Virginia Oncology Associates, Seaside/Atlantic Shores and Heartland Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the following scholarship, which his beloved friend, the Honorable William R. "Buster" O'Brien, established in his honor on the 50th anniversary of his membership in the Bar Association: The Richard G. Brydges Endowment, c/o Carol Hennion, Director of Development, University of Notre Dame, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, Indiana 46556-5612. We also ask that any eligible and willing parties please consider donating blood through the American Red Cross. Funeral arrangements are being handled by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, in Virginia Beach. The ceremony will be held at Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church on Monday, March 7, at 2 p.m. The family would be delighted to receive visitors Sunday evening, March 6, at Mr. Brydges' home at 1284 Laskin Road No. 301, Virginia Beach, and after the service at the offices of Brydges, Geroe, Rosenblatt & O'Brien at 1369 Laskin Road.

In addition to golf, Earl loved to fish and hunt. He, along with several close friends, would travel annually to Georgian Bay in Ontario to fish for walleye pike. Notes:

William H. "Buddy" Brydges, age 74, passed away at his home in Naples, FL, on Tuesday May 2, 2018 surrounded by loved ones. He was born on October 21, 1943 in Niagara Falls, NY, to Earl W. Brydges and Eleanor (Mahoney) Brydges.
He attended high school in Wilson, NY. Upon graduation he attended St. John Fisher in Rochester, NY. He was faithfully called to serve with the Edmundite Missions in Selma, AL. He proudly served in the Army National Guard. He received his degree from the State University of New York at Albany. He had a long and distinguished career as the Deputy Chief Clerk of the New York State Court of Claims.
On October 11, 1968, he married the love of his life Barbara Ann Dumas. Together they have four daughters and one son.
Buddy lived life to its fullest. He loved the horses at Saratoga Racetrack, the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. His greatest talent, however, was as a storyteller. His humor, wit and charm were undeniable. To his children's chagrin, he never missed an opportunity to grab a microphone, the center of the stage, and entertain the crowd. The only thing he loved more than sinking a putt to beat one of his brothers or his cousin in golf was to talk about it after.
He was incredibly generous to family, friends and strangers alike. Nothing gave him more joy than to start a day getting his grandchildren dozens of Dunkin' Donuts and end it cooking family and friends his famed seafood pescatore. A true family man, Uncle Bud was beloved by his nieces and nephews. He was a man of great faith and attended Mass regularly. He will be missed by all who had the great fortune to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Jerry. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara; daughters, Jennifer Brydges, Kelly (Bob) Turner, Betty Jean (Jimmer) Szatkowski , Marcy (Matt) McNamara; and son, Michael Francis; sisters, Marylynn (Bill) Barden, Margaret (Pat) Martin, Janet Brydges; brothers, Earl (Marty) Brydges, Dennis (Evelyn) Brydges, Thomas (Melissa) Brydges; and 11 loving grandchildren; nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 11th at 11 AM, St. Brendon, Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 345 Lake St. Wilson, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse of Collier County, Center for the Blindness and Vision Loss.

    Notes:

Sandra Mann Ormsby, 72, a Niagara Falls native and longtime resident of Lewiston, died Tuesday, July 11, of injuries sustained in a fall in her home.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. (Gladys I.) Mann, Sandra was born March 16, 1945, in Niagara Falls, living there before moving to Lewiston as a teenager. She attended the former Madonna High School in Niagara Falls before going on to receive her bachelor's degree in English from Niagara University.
Having married Linus L. Ormsby Jr. on Sept. 23, 1967, and, true to her skills as an event planner, Sandra was busily engaged in making arrangements for the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in September.
She began her working career at the Niagara Gazette, where she was a reporter and feature writer for the family news department. She also worked for a time as director of the former Lewiston Business and Professional Association before joining her alma mater as director of alumni relations in 1984. In that role, she edited the Niagara University alumni magazine, traveled to alumni events across the country, and planned annual alumni weekend activities over a period of 19 years.
Sandra also served for a time as chair of the board of Stella Niagara Education Park.
In 2003, she became director of university events at Niagara, a position she described as "the best job ever."She retired from the university in May of 2013 after 29 years of service. When she was inducted into the university's honor society, Sigma Alpha Sigma, upon retirement, then Niagara University president Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., with whom she worked closely, praised Sandra for the high standards she set in performing her various duties. "Whether it's preparing a menu for a special dinner, decorating a room for an important function, attending to all the details for commencement, or drafting a variety of written materials, I know I can depend on Sandra to complete the task well," he said.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Linus; a daughter, Maureen P. (Dan) Allen of Alexandria, Va.; and two grandchildren, Lauren and Erin Allen. She is also survived by two brothers, William (Lois) Mann of Millville, Del., and Kevin (Sheree) Mann of Lewisberry, Pa.; a sister, Kathleen (Richard) Lepley of Ashburn, Va.; an aunt, Margaret Mann of Lewiston; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
