Two Brothers, Unable to Swim, Are Drowned in Storm Off Sandy Beach
Bergholtz Youths Are Victims Of Double Fatality; One Body Is Recovered.
The Niagara river took a ton of at least two lives yesterday when Harold Jagow, 17, and his brother, Benjamin Jagow, 18, both of Jagow road, town of Wheatfield, were drowned while swimming at Sandy Beach, on Grand Island in the upper river. Reports that another swimmer of the group at the beach was missing were not confirmed.
The body of the younger brother was recovered about 9 last night, some 400 feet out in the river from the point where he had been swimming and search is being today continued for the second body.
Accompanied by three cousins, the two youths went to the beach about 3 p. m. yesterday. and shortly after they had entered the water became separated from the others. With a crowd of some 50 or 60 persons at the small beach, they were not seen by their cousins again, the others assuming that the pair was somewhere in the crowd, which was agitated by wind and rain, which descended at intervals. Finally, about 6 p. m.. their attempts to become reunited with the pair disclosing that they were not in the crowd the cousins raised an alarm and the customs border patrol was notified.
One woman in the crowd revealed that she had seen one of the boys go down in the deep water a short distance from the shore but had assumed at the time that he was merely diving. Meanwhile rumor spread that three other swimmers were missing but two of these were later discovered inland under a tree where they had protected themselves from the storm. Whether a third person was actually missing could not be determined.
Neither of the brothers could swim a stroke, members of the family said today. The pair had never been to the beach before, they said.
Accompanying the pair were three cousins, Norman Devantier, 21 years old, and his two sisters, Lydia and Edna Devantier, all of Tuscarora road, Town of Niagara.
Sergeant Oliver C. Vossler and Inspector Edward T. Millidge, of the customs border patrol, found the body of the younger Jagow brother at about 9 o'clock last night through the use of grappling hooks. Medical Examiner Charles E. Long, of Buffalo, issued a certificate of accidental death.
The search was abandoned late last night because of the high wind hut was resumed today although it was feared that the other body may have been carried down the river and possibly over the cataract.
Funeral arrangements for the younger youth have not been completed yet but is expected that the service will be held Wednesday. Surviving the pair, who were born and raised in Bergholtz, are their father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jagow; six brothers, Walter Jagow, of Denver, Col., and Howard, Franklin, Irwin, Victor and Frederick Jagow, all of the Town of Wheatfield; and four sisters, Mrs. Hugo Gade and Mrs. Melvin Williams, both of Bergholtz, and Elfrieda and Marilyn Jagow, both at home.

    Notes:

Birth: Mar. 21, 1963 New York, USA
Death: Mar. 30, 2000 New York, USA

On Thursday March 30, 2000 Brenda lost her battle with melanoma skin cancer at age 37.
Melanoma is the most serious cancer of the skin. According to the Melanoma Research Foundation in Lake Forest, CA, one human being dies every hour of every day of the year, in the United States, of melanoma skin cancer. Melanoma strikes people of all ages, all races, all economic levels and both sexes. It is already the most common cancer for women 25 to 29 and the second most common cancer for women 30 to 34. Melanoma is increasing faster than any other cancer. Children born today have a four to five times greater risk of developing melanoma in their lifetimes than their parents have.
Brenda was first diagnosed with malignant melanoma in January 1995. She had a large mole on her back that turned black and began bleeding. It was removed with clear margins all the way around. Her lymph nodes were also clear.
Due to the lack of knowledge of what melanoma skin cancer is all about, Brenda and her family were not overly concerned about her future. She made regular routine visits to her doctors and had several other moles removed that were non-malignant. Life went on as normal except Brenda now avoided the sun, wore large hats, sunscreen and more protective clothing. Still the seriousness of the cancer did not set in with the family as they continued to enjoy sun-filled activities.
October 1999 would change all that. Brenda found a small lump that appeared on her back. It was the size of a marble and blue in color. She met with her surgeon who planned to remove the lump. Surgery was scheduled for November 23 and three more lumps appeared before the surgery. The results came back as malignant melanoma stage IV. It turns out that the blue was actually bleeding under the skin. Immediate cat scans were done which revealed the cancer had metastasized to her lungs, liver and brain.
Brenda was given only "months" to live. She had chosen to take no treatments and felt she would rather spend her last few months having a better quality of life. She knew how sick interferon and radiation could make her and their rate of working was minimal at best. Good nutrition, a positive attitude toward healing and a strong faith were her treatments.
On February 9th, 2000 Brenda returned for another cat scan. The results showed the brain tumor was increasing and she was given only a couple more weeks to live. The tumor grew quickly as it does with melanoma and Brenda passed away seven weeks later.
Beth is sharing this story with you for several reasons. First, she wishes to honor the memory of her sister and also to pass along her sister's wish that others learn about melanoma. In addition, Beth lost a step-sister two months later to colon cancer, not to mention several family friends that also passed away that year.
"Life is to short to not live it to it's fullest. Spend every day doing something you enjoy and tell the special people in your life how much they mean to you," sister Beth.

Earl “The Squirrel” Williams passed away peacefully in his sleep May 13, 2024. He was born on the 4th of July, 1958 in Newfane NY, son of Thomas Williams (deceased) and Lorena (Lester) Williams of Ransomville NY.Earl had an amazing life and was a happy-go-lucky, quick witted man who always had a warm smile on his face and a warm hug for his friends and family. He was very outgoing and would introduce himself to everyone he met telling them his name and his birthday. He was convinced that all the fireworks and celebrating on July 4th was for him. He was a member and honorary Elder of St. Peters Lutheran Church North Ridge on Church Street in Lockport NY. Earl was a poster child with Senator Earl Brydges for Down Syndrome Awareness. He was an avid bowler, golfer, dancer, card player and considered himself to be a pro in everything he attempted, just ask him! He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, a Buffalo Bills and New York Jets Football fan and loved all styles of music, especially Barbara Mandrel. Earl loved his golf cart named “The Earlmobile” and would be seen driving it all around the neighborhood. He was a proud member of the "Lockport Chimers" Bell Ringers Group. He loved all women, especially blondes and considered himself a bit of a Chick Magnet! As he would say, “What can I say, they love me!”He is survived by his siblings Mark “Buc”(Patrice) Williams of Lockport and sister Cynthia(Lon) St. Louis of Gasport NY, as well as niece Larissa (Jake) Raymond, nephews Alonzo (Rachel) St. Louis and Thomas Williams well as many cousins, aunts, uncles and dear friends.Friends and family can pay respects at Hardison Funeral Home at 3648 Ransomville Rd, Ransomville, NY 14131 On Sunday May 19, 2024 between the hours of 1 and 4 PM.
