Henry Heuer Dies at Bergholtz Home
Born in Wheatfield; Funeral. Services Monday Afternoon.
BERGHOLTZ, March 2.-Henry Heuer, 73 years old, lifelong resident and farmer of Niagara county, died yesterday at his home in Bergholtz following a brief illness.
The deceased was born in the town of Wheatfield and spent all of his life, with the exception of seven years on the same farm. Seven years ago he retired and has lived in Bcrgholtz since that time.
He is survived by his wife, Christine; six sons, Fred C. of Niagara Falls, David C., George M., Henry Jr., and John A., of Bergholtz, and the Rev. Louis E. Heuer, of Akron, N. Y. Funeral Services for Prominent Falls Milk Dealer Largely Attended. Funeral services for Fred C. Heuer, prominent Falls milk dealer who died last Thursday, following a short illness, were held from the family home, 1626 Cleveland avenue, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. and at 3 o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran church, with the Rev. Gustav Ziemer officiating. The very large attendance at the funeral and the profusion of floral offerings testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held by many friends and business acquaintances. The services were also attended by a large delegation of Falls milk dealers. Following the church services the remains were taken to Bergholtz for interment in the Bergholtz cemetery. The pall bearers were Henry Sy, John Devantier, Philip Williams, Lebrecht Schultz, Fred Werth and Edward Neubauer.

After 15 years at that location, the market was moved to 439 Third St where it still is located . Mr Heuer retired from active participation in the business about two years ago. In addition to his son Lewis Heuer, he is survived by another son, Elmer Heuer, this city, and a daughter, Mrs. Valerius Ferchen, Bergholtz; four sisters, Mrs. John Gombert, Mrs. Charles Voelker and Mrs. Fred Dinger, all of this city, and Mrs. Julie Witkop, North Tonawanda; four brothers, George, Henry and John Heuer. all of Bergholtz, and the Rev. John Heuer, charter member of Bergholz Fire Company, dies
John A. Heuer, 79, a charter member of the First Volunteer Fire Company of Bergholz, died today in DeVeaux Manor Nursing Home in Niagara Falls.
Mr. Heuer, of 6906 Errick Road, Wheatfield, was a lifelong resident of that town, and a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the St. James Brotherhood.
A long-time fire chief in Bergholz, he was a member of many volunteer firemen's and fire chiefs associations. These included the Niagara County Volunteer Fire Chiefs Association, New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's Association, State of New York Firemen's Association and Western New York Firemen's Association.
He also was a member of the Retired Men's Service Club of the Niagara Frontier, the Wheatfield Democratic Club and the Senior Citizens of the Town of Wheatfield.
In 1966, he received the Fire Service Award of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen's Association for "betterment of fire service in the community."
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Benjamin (Dorothy) Wolf and Mrs. Roy (Lydia) Masters; three sons, Clarence, Harold and James Heuer, all of Wheatfield; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry of North Tonawanda, and the Rev. Louis Heuer of Grove City, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Voelker of Niagara Falls and Mrs. Fred Dinger of Winterhaven, Fla.

Mr. Heuer graduated from Martin Luther Seminary in Buffalo, and served congregations in Livoma, Minn.; Akron, N.Y.; Holldays Cove, W.Va.; Columbus, Ohio; and Yorkville, Ill. After his retirement he lived in Grove City, Ohio, where he continued to serve as a supply pastor. He spent the last several years at the St. John's Lutheran Home. He is survived by his wife Wilhelmine (Mueller) Heuer; a son, the Rev. Bernard (Betty) Heuer of Whiting, N.J.; daughter Gertrude (the Rev. Willard) Kalk of Fairport Harbor, Ohio; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Edward (Edna) Mueller of Niagara Falls; and several nieces and nephews. Collision kills 2 Niagarans
DARIEN CENTER - Two Niagara County residents and a Pittsford man died, in a three-car collision Sunday near this Genesee County community. Seven others were injured. State Police said Mrs. Beata MilleviIle, 76, of 2035 Cayuga Drive Extension, Niagara Falls, and Mrs. Regina Ferchen, 76, of 3316 Evergreen Drive, North Tonawanda, were dead on arrival at St. Jerome Hospital in nearby Batavia. They were passengers in a car driven by Harold A. Proefrock, 52, of 7168 Nash Road, North Tonawanda, who was listed in satisfactory condition today at St. Jerome. His wife, Winifred Proefrock, 49, was in satisfactory condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. Mrs. Proefrock, who had been in critical condition Sunday, is Mrs. Milleville's daughter, a hospital spokesman said. Police said Frederick Treesh, 38, of Pittsford, near Rochester, the driver of the second car, was killed instantly. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. Sunday. His son Frederick Treesh, 9, was in satisfactory condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. He, too, was removed from the critical list this morning. James Karl, 34, and his son, Stephen, 9, both of Henrietta, were listed in guarded condition at Strung Memorial Hospital in Rochester. They were passengers in the Treesh auto, state troopers said. Arletta Nusinov, 23, of Baltimore, Md., the driver of the third car, was in satisfactory condition at St. Jerome. A passenger in her auto Kevin Sachs, 32, of Severna Park, Md., was treated and released, troopers said. Investigators said the accident happened when the car driven by Miss Nusinov, which was westbound on Route 20, crossed the center line and struck the eastbound Proefrock auto nearly headon. Proefrock's car then skidded out of control and struck the westbound Treesh auto. Troopers said everyone except the Treeshs and the Karls was wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

The death last night of Edgar Heuer, 20 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Heuer of Bergholz occurred in the Buffalo General hospital after a lingering illness. Heuer was born in Bergholz, where he had always made his home, and besides the parents, is survived by three brothers, Theodore, Elmer and Louis and one sister, Alice Heuer.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock standard time from the late residence and at three o'clock from St. Jacob's church after which interment will be in St. Jacob's cemetery.

BERGHOLTZ, N. Y., June 17.-Edgar Heur (sic), 19 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Heur. who live one mile south of Bergholtz, died in the Buffalo General hospital on Wednesday night following a serious operation he underwent a couple of weeks ago and from which he never rallied. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, Theodore, Elmer and Lewis (sic), and one sister, Alice. The funeral will be held at the home of his parents on Saturday at 2:30 p. m. standard time and at St. Jacob's church Bergholtz, at 3:00 p. m., Reverend O. Bruss officiating.

Edgar Heuer Is Laid at Rest
Funeral Services for Popular Young Man on Saturday.
BERGHOLTZ, June 23.-The passing at Edgar Heuer, 19 years old, removes one of the most popular young residents of Niagara county (sic) and vicinity, whose life was in every respect an exemplification of Christianity and civility.
Mr. Heuer was born in La Salle on August 29th, 1907. but came to this village when a young child with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Heuer. He was an employe (sic) of the Buffalo Avenue Shredded heat (sic) Company at Niagara Falls last summer, but went into business with his father at Niagara Falls. He enjoyed the peoples' respect and esteem, and their support in the realization of his worthy aspiration and will be sadly missed by all his old and new friends. He was failing in health about four weeks ago, which made it necessary for him to go to the General Hospital in Buffalo, where a serious operation was performed on him for kidney trouble two weeks ago, and from which he never rallied. He passed quietly and peacefully away on June 15th and will be deeply mourned by his parents, three brothers, Theodor (sic), Elmer and Lewis, and one sister, Alice. The funeral services were held from the home of his parents at 2.30 o'clock, standard time, and at 3 o'clock at St. Jacob's church last Saturday. The Rev. Otto Bruss officiated. Burial was in St. Jacob's cemetery, where many of his friends and forebears rest, and his tomb will be the shrine of a wide circle of friends and relatives for many years to come. The. flower tributes were many and beautiful, among them a large piece of the Bergholtz Strong Nine baseball team of which he was a member before his illness. Pallbearers were, Philip Moll, Hubert Ferchen, Roland Bruss, Martin Milleville, Edward Eggert and Albert Zimmermann

Bergholtz Man Called by Death
BERGHOLTZ, Dec. l6.-Theodore Heuer, 25 years old, of this village, died Saturday afternoon after an illness of ten months. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home here and at 2:30 at St. James Lutheran church. The Rev. Otto Bruss will officiate and interment will be in St. James cemetery. Mr. Heuer was well known at Niagara Falls where he was engaged in the meat business with his father, David C. Heuer, at 406 Seventh street, for the past eight years. He was a graduate of the Niagara Falls High school. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Elmer G. Heuer, 85, who operated David C. Heuer and Sons Market on Third Street, died Thursday (June 29, 2000) in St. Mary's Manor after a lengthy illness.
A native of Bergholz, Heuer was 12 when he joined the Bergholz German Band, playing saxophone and singing with the group for more than 20 years. He was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School.
Heuer served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Upon his return from the war, Heuer operated David C. Heuer and Sons Market, which was owned and operated by David C. Heuer and his four sons from 1905 through 1984.
A lifelong member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bergholz, he served as its financial secretary for 20 years and was a member of the mixed choir and men's chorus. In addition, he was a member of Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company and Bergholz Exempt Fire Company.
Known for his Bing Crosby-like voice, Heuer was a member of the Retired Men's Chorus and the Niagara Frontier Oratorio Society. While his sons were young, he also served as a Little League coach, and he passed along to them his devotion to the New York Yankees.
He and the former Kathryn Ann Boyle were married for 59 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Christine Schnepf; two sons, Frederick of Lewiston and Andrew; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at 9:30 A.M. Saturday in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Niagara Road and Rohr Street, Bergholz. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston

NIAGARA FALLS - George "Chick" Heuer, age 89, was called to his heavenly home to be with our Lord and Savior on September 19, 2010 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He was born in the Town of Wheatfield, NY on March 20, 1921 to the late George and Christine Heuer. George was predeceased by his loving wife, Helma (DeVantier) Heuer on December 26, 1986. They were united in marriage on August 3, 1946. George served in the U.S. Army in the 28th Infantry Division as a Heavy Machine Gunner during World War II. He was wounded in battle in Normandy, France on August 11, 1944, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. George was employed for 43 years at the National Grinding Wheel in North Tonawanda, retiring in 1984. He was a longtime member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholz, where he held numerous offices over the years, including elder and sang for many years in the choir. He was chairman of the Building Committee during the construction of the church. He was a member of the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company for over 70 years and a former foreman and assistant chief. George was also a member of the Wheatfield Senior Citizens.

Survivors include two devoted daughters, Cynthia and Marcia Heuer of Wheatfield; a sister, Lillian (late Chester) Haseley of Sanborn and brother-in-law, Dennis (Doris) DeVantier of Wheatfield; and several nephews and a niece. In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by two brothers, Martin and Arthur Heuer and a sister, Hildegarde.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul Calvary Lutheran Church, 18th Street and Cleveland Avenue, with the Rev. Douglas R. Behm officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Calvary Cemetery.

NORTH TONAWANDA - Harold H. Heuer, age 89, of Wheatfield, was called to his heavenly home to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Born in the Town of Wheatfield, NY, on April 15, 1921 to the late John and Esther (Mueller) Heuer. Harold was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II in the 896th Signal Company. He was employed at Hooker Chemical for 40 years and a half years until his retirement. Harold was a member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Wheatfield and their Men's Club, American Legion Wheatfield Post 1451, Bergholz Volunteer Fire Co., Lutheran Layman's League, Town of Wheatfield Senior Citizens, North German Historical Society; volunteered at Meals On Wheels, Elderwood Health Care at Crestwood and North Gate Health Care Facility. Hobbies and interests included gardening, bowling and playing euchre.

Survivors include his wife, Jane E. (Pankow) Heuer. They were united in marriage February 9, 1946; four children, Curtis (Jeanne) Heuer, Mary (Henry) Striewing, Mark (Minerva) Heuer and Steven (Ann) Heuer; a brother, James Heuer; sister, Lydia Masters; five grandchildren, Nathan Heuer, Michael and Matthew Striewing, Virginia Kahmann and Jonathan Heuer; and a great-granddaughter, Briahnna Lynn. Evelyn Henrietta Gade, 93, of Springfield, IL, died Sunday April 30, 2006 at the Heritage Manor. She was born May 24, 1912 in Martinsville, NY, the daughter of Fred and Magdalena Hoffmeister Jagow. She married Hugo Gade in Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, Bergholz, NY June 28,1931. He preceded her in death in 1980
She taught kindergarten in Lutheran schools in LaPorte, IN and Baltimore, MD and later became a division manager for World Book Company in the Baltimore area. She was known for her warmth and hospitality and frequently shared bounty from her beautiful garden. She adapted cheerfully to changes in her life with moves to Pittsburgh, PA, LaPorte, IN and Baltimore, MD where her husband taught in Lutheran schools. They moved to Bel Air, MD in retirement and were active at St. Matthew Lutheran Church and fulfilled a dream of an organic garden. She particularly enjoyed growing strawberries and making jam to share with her many friends. Evelyn moved to Springfield, IL to be near her eldest daughter in 1996 and joined in fellowship at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was active in the quilting group and senior Bible class.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, North Ridge, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was also a friend of Concordia Lutheran Church. Elizabeth was a Literacy Volunteer and enjoyed wood carving, gardening, sewing, fishing, and hunting, and loved to cook and bake. Her greatest passion was Bible Study, prayer, and sharing her Christian Faith. In 1977, Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Melvin C. Williams. She was also predeceased by her son Thomas (Lorena) Williams, and two granddaughters, Brenda Brawn (Tom) Cervi and Lauries Volls (Mike) Fournier. Franklin F. Jagow, 49, of 6635 Hunt St., Bergholtz, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 1966) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital shortly after suffering a heart attack at home.
He was first vice president of the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church; first commander of the Wheatfield Post of the American Legion; a member of the Bergholtz Fire Co. and a director of the Cooperative Fire 1nsurance Co. of Bergholtz.
Mr. Jagow was employed by the Carborundum Co. for 30 years as a small wheel molder.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Norma Mielke Jagow; three sons, Wayne Jagow, a student at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis; Daniel Jagow and Robert Jagow, both of Bcrgholtz; his father, Frederick Jagow, Bergholtz; four sisters, Mrs. Hugo (Evelyn) Gade. Baltimore; Mrs. Melvin (Elizabeth) Williams, Wilson; Miss Elfrieda Jagow, this city; and Mrs. Milton (Marilyn) Warblow, North Tonawanda.

Two Brothers, Unable to Swim, Are Drowned in Storm Off Sandy Beach
Bergholtz Youths Are Victims Of Double Fatality; One Body Is Recovered.
The Niagara river took a ton of at least two lives yesterday when Harold Jagow, 17, and his brother, Benjamin Jagow, 18, both of Jagow road, town of Wheatfield, were drowned while swimming at Sandy Beach, on Grand Island in the upper river. Reports that another swimmer of the group at the beach was missing were not confirmed.
The body of the younger brother was recovered about 9 last night, some 400 feet out in the river from the point where he had been swimming and search is being today continued for the second body.
Accompanied by three cousins, the two youths went to the beach about 3 p. m. yesterday. and shortly after they had entered the water became separated from the others. With a crowd of some 50 or 60 persons at the small beach, they were not seen by their cousins again, the others assuming that the pair was somewhere in the crowd, which was agitated by wind and rain, which descended at intervals. Finally, about 6 p. m.. their attempts to become reunited with the pair disclosing that they were not in the crowd the cousins raised an alarm and the customs border patrol was notified.
One woman in the crowd revealed that she had seen one of the boys go down in the deep water a short distance from the shore but had assumed at the time that he was merely diving. Meanwhile rumor spread that three other swimmers were missing but two of these were later discovered inland under a tree where they had protected themselves from the storm. Whether a third person was actually missing could not be determined.
Neither of the brothers could swim a stroke, members of the family said today. The pair had never been to the beach before, they said.
Accompanying the pair were three cousins, Norman Devantier, 21 years old, and his two sisters, Lydia and Edna Devantier, all of Tuscarora road, Town of Niagara.
Sergeant Oliver C. Vossler and Inspector Edward T. Millidge, of the customs border patrol, found the body of the younger Jagow brother at about 9 o'clock last night through the use of grappling hooks. Medical Examiner Charles E. Long, of Buffalo, issued a certificate of accidental death.
The search was abandoned late last night because of the high wind hut was resumed today although it was feared that the other body may have been carried down the river and possibly over the cataract.
Funeral arrangements for the younger youth have not been completed yet but is expected that the service will be held Wednesday. Surviving the pair, who were born and raised in Bergholtz, are their father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jagow; six brothers, Walter Jagow, of Denver, Col., and Howard, Franklin, Irwin, Victor and Frederick Jagow, all of the Town of Wheatfield; and four sisters, Mrs. Hugo Gade and Mrs. Melvin Williams, both of Bergholtz, and Elfrieda and Marilyn Jagow, both at home.

TWO BROTHERS LOSE LIVES IN NIAGARA RIVER
Residents of Niagara Falls Boulevard, Bergholz, are drowned near Buckhorn Island
Two brothers were drowned in the Niagara River at the state park reservation on Buckhorn Island just off the northeast shore of Grand Island yesterday afternoon.
Authorities reported they were Harold and Benjamin Gagow (sic) of Niagara Fans Boulevard, Bergholtz, Town of Wheatfield. They were eighteen to twenty years old.
The brothers went to the island at 3 p. m. with a third youth, who started a hunt for them when it was time for him to go home. The brothers' clothes were found on the shore and when no trace of them was to be seen the United States customs border patrol was notified. Sergt (sic) Oliver C. Vossler and Inspector Edward T. Millidge went to the scene in a boat equipped with grappling irons.
After dragging an hour the border patrolmen found one of the bodies. whose it was could not immediately be determined. They were grappling for the second body early this morning. Medical Examiner Charles E. Long was notified and went to the island.

SECOND BROTHER IN GRAND ISLAND BEACH DROWNING IS BURIED
Body of Benjamin Jagow, Victim of Double Tragedy, Interred at Bergholtz
The body of Benjamin Jagow, 18 years old, of the Jagow road, Town of Wheatfield, was laid at rest this afternoon in Holy Ghost cemetery. Bergholtz, beside that of his brother, Harold, 17. who was buried yesterday. Both boys met their deaths in a double swimming fatality at a Grand Island beach Sunday afternoon but the elder brother's body was not recovered until yesterday afternoon.
Recovery of the body. as was related in yesterday's Owl edition of the Gazette, was made near the Canadian Maid of the Mist landing by Edward Sloggett and Bert LeBlond, employees of the Maid of the Mist Steamship company, who were able to reach it near the Falls View bridge in a rowboat.
Identification of the body at the Morse and Sons funeral parlors in Niagara Falls, Ont., was made late yesterday by Fred Jagow, father of the youths. Dr. George B. Snyder, Niagara Falls, Ont, coroner, examined the remains and decided that an inquest was not necessary. The services this afternoon were held from the family home with the Rev. John Kuchenbecker, pastor of the Holy Ghost Lutheran church, at Bergholtz, officiating.
The body of Harold was recovered Sunday night near the spot where the drowning occurred by members of the customs border patrol who dragged the river with grappling hooks. The two youths, with three cousins, went to the beach Sunday about 3 o'clock and immediately became separated from their relations. The cousins did not realize, because of a rain storm and the crowd that the pair was missing until about 6 o'clock when an alarm was raised. The double fatality was first reported to have occurred at Sandy Beach on Grand Island but J. C. Janes, agent for the owners of the Sandy Beach property, yesterday denied that it had occurred there but placed it at the Wagner farm, an adjoining property.

Neither of the brothers could swim a stroke, members of the family said today. The pair had never been to the beach before, they said.
Accompanying the pair were three cousins, Norman Devantier, 21 years old, and his two sisters, Lydia and Edna Devantier, all of Tuscarora road, Town of Niagara.
Sergeant Oliver C. Vossler and Inspector Edward T. Millidge, of the customs border patrol, found the body of the younger Jagow brother at about 9 o'clock last night through the use of grappling hooks. Medical Examiner Charles E. Long, of Buffalo, issued a certificate of accidental death.
The search was abandoned late last night because of the high wind hut was resumed today although it was feared that the other body may have been carried down the river and possibly over the cataract.
Funeral arrangements for the younger youth have not been completed yet but is expected that the service will be held Wednesday. Surviving the pair, who were born and raised in Bergholtz, are their father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jagow; six brothers, Walter Jagow, of Denver, Col., and Howard, Franklin, Irwin, Victor and Frederick Jagow, all of the Town of Wheatfield; and four sisters, Mrs. Hugo Gade and Mrs. Melvin Williams, both of Bergholtz, and Elfrieda and Marilyn Jagow, both at home.

TWO BROTHERS LOSE LIVES IN NIAGARA RIVER
Residents of Niagara Falls Boulevard, Bergholz, are drowned near Buckhorn Island
Two brothers were drowned in the Niagara River at the state park reservation on Buckhorn Island just off the northeast shore of Grand Island yesterday afternoon.
Authorities reported they were Harold and Benjamin Gagow (sic) of Niagara Fans Boulevard, Bergholtz, Town of Wheatfield. They were eighteen to twenty years old.
The brothers went to the island at 3 p. m. with a third youth, who started a hunt for them when it was time for him to go home. The brothers' clothes were found on the shore and when no trace of them was to be seen the United States customs border patrol was notified. Sergt (sic) Oliver C. Vossler and Inspector Edward T. Millidge went to the scene in a boat equipped with grappling irons.
After dragging an hour the border patrolmen found one of the bodies. whose it was could not immediately be determined. They were grappling for the second body early this morning. Medical Examiner Charles E. Long was notified and went to the island.

SECOND BROTHER IN GRAND ISLAND BEACH DROWNING IS BURIED
Body of Benjamin Jagow, Victim of Double Tragedy, Interred at Bergholtz
The body of Benjamin Jagow, 18 years old, of the Jagow road, Town of Wheatfield, was laid at rest this afternoon in Holy Ghost cemetery. Bergholtz, beside that of his brother, Harold, 17. who was buried yesterday. Both boys met their deaths in a double swimming fatality at a Grand Island beach Sunday afternoon but the elder brother's body was not recovered until yesterday afternoon.
Recovery of the body. as was related in yesterday's Owl edition of the Gazette, was made near the Canadian Maid of the Mist landing by Edward Sloggett and Bert LeBlond, employees of the Maid of the Mist Steamship company, who were able to reach it near the Falls View bridge in a rowboat.
Identification of the body at the Morse and Sons funeral parlors in Niagara Falls, Ont., was made late yesterday by Fred Jagow, father of the youths. Dr. George B. Snyder, Niagara Falls, Ont, coroner, examined the remains and decided that an inquest was not necessary. The services this afternoon were held from the family home with the Rev. John Kuchenbecker, pastor of the Holy Ghost Lutheran church, at Bergholtz, officiating.
The body of Harold was recovered Sunday night near the spot where the drowning occurred by members of the customs border patrol who dragged the river with grappling hooks. The two youths, with three cousins, went to the beach Sunday about 3 o'clock and immediately became separated from their relations. The cousins did not realize, because of a rain storm and the crowd that the pair was missing until about 6 o'clock when an alarm was raised. The double fatality was first reported to have occurred at Sandy Beach on Grand Island but J. C. Janes, agent for the owners of the Sandy Beach property, yesterday denied that it had occurred there but placed it at the Wagner farm, an adjoining property.

BERGHOLTZ, July 29-Funeral services for Harold Jagow, 16, who was drowned Sunday while swimming at Sandy beach, on Grand Island, in the upper river, were held at the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and from the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. John Kreckenbecker (sic) officiated. The bearers were: Clarence Hoyer, Norman Devanter, Arthur Wolf, Harrison Noblo, Alvin Schemschack (sic), Alvin Stoelting. Interment was in the Holy Ghost cemetery.

Wheatfield official E.D. Jagow dies
BERGHOLTZ - Erwin D. Jagow, 53, of 2587 Niagara Road, died Friday (Oct. 7, 1977) in Buffalo Veteran's Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was a life-long resident of Wheatfield where he was a building inspector and ordinance officer for the last II years.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Layman's League, Bergholtz Fire Company, the Wheatfield Association, and a 12-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was also past commander of the Wheatfield Post American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Harloff); two sons, Dale of Greensboro, N.C., and Brent at home; two brothers, Howard Jagow of Wheatfield; and Victor of Thurmont, Md.; four sisters, Mrs. Hugo (Evelyn) Gade of Forest Hills, Md., Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Winter of North Tonawanda, and Mrs. Melvin (Betty) Williams and Miss Alfreda Jagow, both of Wilson. Also surviving are two grandchildren.
There will be no prior visitation. Funeral services will he held 10:30 a.m. Monday from Holy Ghost Lutheran Church with the Rev. Albert W. Bahr officiating.
Burial will be in Holy Ghost Lutheran Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church building fund.

Elmer A. De Vantier 84, of the Town of Cambria, NY died Wednesday June 12, 2002, in the Mt. St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, Niagara County, NY, after a long illness.
He was born February 6, 1918, in the Town of Niagara the son of Albert and Christine [ Hoffmeister ] De Vantier, where he attended local schools. Always living on a farm, Elmer began his farming career at an early age, assisting with the farm chores as a child.
He moved to the town of Cambria, in 1944, where he continued to operate his own farm, until his health prevented him from doing so. He was a longtime member of the St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Pekin, Niagara County, NY.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Ruth E. NORTH TONAWANDA — Jean D. (Wrege) Phillips, age 88, of North Tonawanda, was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at her residence. Born in North Tonawanda, NY, on June 18, 1923 to the late William and Elizabeth (Hoffmeister) Wrege.

She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda and was a devoted homemaker. Jean was the beloved wife of the late George M. Phillips and was also predeceased by a brother, William Wrege, Jr.

Loving mother of four children, Sharyn E., Daniel G., David M. (Marsha), all of North Tonawanda and Dennis P. of Fort Meyers Beach, FL; also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Of the Town of Wheatfield, NY, passed away on  Sunday, April 16, 2023, at his home.  He was born in the Town of Wheatfield, NY on June 2, 1928, a son of the late Edward and  Ella [Hoffmeister] Schroeder.
Mr. Schroeder served with the US Army from 1955 to 1957.
He was employed with the Town of Wheatfield Highway Department for over 25 years, retiring in 1989.
Mr. Schroeder enjoyed classic cars, antiques, riding his Harley and traveling.
He is survived by two nephews Ronald and Donald Schroeder, his dear friend Carole Kincaid and her daughter Natalie (Erick Underwood) Borga, also many cousins  and friends.
He was the brother of the late Robert Schroeder.

He also was a well-known instructor and speaker for the life insurance industry. Dick's love of baseball led him to play semi-pro with the Detroit Tigers, coaching youth and high school baseball, where he was named Suburban coach of the year at Highland High School and to umpiring high school and college games. Dick was a long time member of Rawiga Country Club and a founding member of the Wolf Pack.

Preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Elfriede Heuer. Daniel E. Haseley, 47, of West Street, a prominent amateur athlete, died Friday (Jan. 30, 1998) in Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He had battled cancer for the past three months.
Haseley was born in Niagara Falls
He attended St. Peter's Lutheran School and graduated from Niagara-Wheatfield Senior High School in 1968.
Haseley was a mechanical engineer operator for the Town of Lewiston for the past 19 years, after having been employed at the Sanborn Milling Co. He worked on his parents' farm during his school years.
Haseley played basketball locally for years, seeing action in the Niagara Falls Industrial, YMCA, Air Base, Inter-Church, and Lutheran Men's leagues. His teams won several league championships, and from 1979 to 1981, Haseley's teams won 36 consecutive games.
He also starred in softball. His Marlboro Inn team won the Art Ponzi Fast-Pitch League crown in 1975, and his Stockade Restaurant squad captured the Niagara Falls Air Base League title in 1984. Haseley's St. Peter's teams dominated the inter-church League for years. Haseley also bowled in the Sanborn Businessmen's League, carrying an average of over 200.
He also played the trumpet for the past 35 years in the Sanborn Fire Company band. He was an exempt member of the fire company and also belonged to St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, the former Carolyn R. Baum; his mother, Lillian B.; his son Scott D.; his daughter Michelle L.; and two brothers, Kevin L. and Randy M.
Services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday in St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6861 Walmore Road

She began her career in education and earned a Masters Degree in Library Science from SUNY Buffalo in 1986. She joined the law firm of Watt, Tieder, Hoffar and Fitzgerald in McLean, VA, as their law librarian and served in that capacity until her passing. She took great pride in her work. SHARON L. MONTIE, age 74, of North Tonawanda, NY, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, following a brief battle with cancer. Sharon was born on January 31, 1946 in Niagara Falls, NY, to Walter J. and Hilda E. (Walck) Jagow. She grew up in Bergholz and graduated from Niagara Wheatfield High School. She earned an Associates degree in Medical Secretarial Arts, from Concordia Lutheran College in Bronxville, NY. She married Thomas Montie on September 3, 1967. They spent half of their married life in the Cleveland, OH area, before moving back to Niagara County in 1997. Sharon worked as an office manager for several medical practices and financial offices, beginning in 1982, until the time of her death.She was a church musician since she was a teenager, playing the piano and organ, and often directing choirs and special ensembles. Most recently, she was the organist and choir director at St. Mark Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda, for over 20 years. She had a gift for leading people in worship. In her home, she was a faithful wife and mother.Survivors include her son, Timothy Montie; two daughters, Sara (Nathan) Hembree, and Carrie Montie; a brother, Charlie Jagow and sister-in-law, Marilyn Jagow; nine grandchildren, Aubrie, Michael, Bethany, Peter, Victor, Judah, Benjamin, Gloria, and Elijah; also sisters-in law, brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Thomas D Williams, age 67, of the Town of Wilson, was called home, to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Wednesday May 4, 2005, at his home under the care of Niagara Hospice. He was born on May 18, 1937, the son of Elizabeth Jagow Williams and the late Melvin C. Williams.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He married Lorena Lester on Jul 20, 1957. Tom worked as a carpenter for 48 years. Singing and wood carving were his passions and he generously gave away most of his carving to family, friends and churches throughout the country.
He was a member of the Board of Directors for Opportunities Unlimited, and Chairman of the Board for six years. He also served on the NYSARC Board of Governors for New York State. He as a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church (North Ridge), and had served as Secretary of the Congregation, Elder, Choir and Praise Group Member, and Chairman of the Board of Education. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1955, was a member of the National Guard and the Barber Shoppers (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.). He worked for the government SBA and was a co-owner of Heavens to Betsy gift shop.
Besides his mother, Elizabeth Williams of Lockport, he is survived by his wife, Lorena (Lester) Williams; three children, Mrs. Cynthia (Alonzo) St. Louis of Barker, Earl Williams of Lockport, and Mark (Patrice) Williams of Newfane; two brothers, Douglas (Nancy) Williams of Arizona, and Timothy (Donna) Williams of Lockport; three sisters, Patricia (Gary) Johnston of Wilson, Nancy (Richard) Reak of Tennessee and Betsy (Carl) Bodie of Wilson; two grandchildren, Larissa St. Louis and Alonzo St. Louis, Jr. and soon to be grandson Thomas Frank Williams. Also survived by several loving aunts, uncle, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Richard P. DeVantier  of the Town of Cambria, NY, passed away on Friday December 20, 2019 at his home.  He was born in Lockport, NY,  on July 20, 1949, a son of Ruth E. (Mueller) DeVantier and the late Elmer A. DeVantier.
Mr. DeVantier graduated from Starpoint  and then served in the US Army during the
Vietnam War.
He was a production worker with Harrison Radiator in Lockport for over 30 years, retiring
in 1999.
Mr. DeVantier continued to operate the family farm and was an active member of St. Andrew
Lutheran Church and a member of the NRA and Farm Bureau.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother Robert (Susan) DeVantier, two sisters
Susan (late William) Thompson and Sharon (Kenneth) Walker, also many nieces, nephews
and cousins.

His family will be present on Friday, December 27, 2019  from 3-7 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL

She was the program director at Niagara County Community College Liberty Program for the past 8 years.
Jamie was actively involved with her children's activities, going to beauty pageants with her daughter and her sons sporting events.
Jamie was a dedicated mother and wife who cherished her time with family and friends, She was a fun loving person who would light up the room and will be remembered for her  outgoing personality.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 9 years, Joshua Reid, her children Carter, Wesley and Vanessa Reid, a brother Jason (Alison) Haseley and was the sister in law of Aaron (fiancee' Shannon Bradley) Reid and Karisa (Nick) Johnson, also many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
