Man Struck By Train, Killed
NORTH TONAWANDA, July 8.-Believed to have been struck by a southbound passenger train of the New York Central railroad's Niagara Falls branch at the Washington street crossing, the lifeless body of Christian Proeforck (sic), 74 years old, of 44 Stenzil (sic) street, was found this afternoon in a ditch beside the railroad track. The body was badly mangled and was ordered removed to Ramp's funeral home, in Adams street, by Coroner Jacob Helwig, who investigated the accident. He said that there were indications that the man was struck on the crossing and had been dead about an hour. It was learned that there is a southbound train which passes over the New York Central tracks at that point at about noon and authorities believe that this train struck the man, its crew unaware of the accident. He is survived by his wife, Wilhelmina Proeforck (sic); five sons, John, of Tonawanda, August, of St. Johnsburg, and Edward, William and George, of North Tonawanda; three daughters, Mrs. Philip Witkopf and Mrs. Rudolph Blank, of Walmore, Mrs. Arnold Weyers, of North Tonawanda; one brother, August, of North Tonawanda, and one sister, Mrs. Gustave Schendel, of Nashville. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 3:30 o'clock from the home and 4 o'clock from St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran church. Interment will be in St. Mark's cemetery, Niagara Falls boulevard.

Proefrock - John W. Proefrock, 88 of 9 Fremont St., Tonawanda, died Thursday (March 9, 1978) at E. J. Meyer Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

A native of North Tonawanda, he had been a resident of the Tonawandas all his life and was the father of Mrs. Vera P. Fischle, who died in 1955. Mr. Proefrock had been employed at Downtown Merchant's Delivery for 40 years, retiring 17 years ago. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Laymen's League and was a former superintendent of the Sunday School. Survivors include his wife,Agatha (nee William); two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Frances) Kaufmann of Kenmore and Mrs. Howard (Vera) Wein of Tonawanda; two sisters, Mrs. Augusta Weyers of North Tonawanda and Mrs. Lucy Mentor of Nevada; three brothers, Edward of Syracuse and William and George Proefrock, both of North Tonawanda, and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Drowned..in the Niagara River at LaSalle

No Person Saw it....

It is thought that Benjamin Proefrock was adjusting the sail on the boat When he met his fate.

He lived in North Tonawanda
A sad case of drowning ocurred near LaSalle on Saturday afternoon. Christian Proefrock worked on a farm near LaSalle. He left his work about 4 o'clock and went to the river where he had a sail boat fastened to a stake. He got into the boat and from the appearance of things, he was arranging a sail when the boat tipped over and the lad fell into the water and was drowned. No person saw the accident nor was it discovered until about 6 o'clock, but it is thought he turned the boat over while adjusting a sail, for the boat was still tied to a stake when the drowning was discovered. The body was found in about four feet of water near the boat.
It is thoght the lad may have struck his head upon a rock and was rendered unconcious, or he may have been taken with cramps.
The drowned boy was but 16 years old and his home was near Ely car barns in North Tonawanda, to which the body was taken.
The funeral ocurred at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The body was taken to St John's for burial.

Walter Proefrock, 80, a former North Tonawanda resident, died Sunday in Chula Vista, Ca., where he had retired several years ago after serving for many years as a supervisor for the Remington Rand Corp. in the Lumber City. Survivors include his wife, Vera, a daughter, and two grandchildren of Chula Vista. Also, one brother, Arnold, and two sisters, Regina Salisbury and Minnie Manth, all of North Tonawanda. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Arnold W. Proefrock, 93, of the Town of Wheatfield, Friday (July 21, 1995) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Proefrock was a former thirty-five year old employee of Bell Aircraft, retiring in 1964 and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda. He was the husband of the late Margaret (nee Pfanner) Proefrock.

He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Paul) Chapman of the Town of Wheatfield and Sally (John) Ferguson of the Town of Amherst; a son, Robert (Mary) Proefrock of the Town of Wheatfield; seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Victim of Tractor Mishap Succumbs
NORTH TONAWANDA, June 28. - Albert Weyers, seventeen years old, son of Otto. Weyers, residing on Lockport avenue in the Martinsville section of North Tonawanda, died at the DeGraff Memorial hospital last midnight from injuries sustained while operating a tractor employed to haul dirt excavated from Kohler street in preparation for the paving of the roadway. Young Weyers was injured early Tuesday afternoon. He was caught between the chain drive of the tractor and one of the wheels when the dump box upended. Death was due to internal injuries. The victim was employed by the Louis H. Gipp Construction company of Buffalo. Coroner W. L. Draper of Niagara Falls, took charge of the case in the absence of Coroner J. E. Helwig from the city.

NORTH TONAWANDA — Roger W. Proefrock, age 87, of North Tonawanda, passed away on August 6, 2011, at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, while under the care of Niagara Hospice. He was born February 5, 1924; his parents were the late William and Augusta Proefrock. Roger was a 1942 graduate of North Tonawanda High School, where he was active in sports and other activities. During WWII he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in the South Pacific. He was stationed in New Guinea, Borneo and the Philippines. After the war he was stationed in Japan for several months before returning home. As a professional carpenter for more than 50 years, Roger built and renovated many homes in North Tonawanda and the surrounding suburbs. He liked helping families create a living environment that was functional and enjoyable.

He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church for over 35 years, where he was active in the church’s Senior and Male Choirs. He also had served as an Elder, Stewardship Chairman and on many other committees. He and his wife were past members of the Twin City Camera Club, spending many hours together photographing wherever their travels took them. Their other interests included tennis and bicycling.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jane (Gillman) Proefrock; a daughter, Ellen (Kirk) Menard; a son, Gary (Deborah) Proefrock; grandchildren, Matthew (Kimberly) Menard, Jeremy Menard and Heather Proefrock; a sister, Dorothy (late Jack) Pettit and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Henry and Myra (nee Sturmer) Proefrock and was an Army Air Corps Veteran of WWII. A lifelong resident of Tonawanda, Mr. Proefrock worked as a truck driver for Lawless Container Co. in North Tonawanda until retiring in 1988, and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 860 in North Tonawanda, and the American Legion, Tonawandas Post No. 264. He was the husband of the late Sally (nee Nowak) Proefrock, who died in 1987, and Jane (Betz) Proefrock, who died in 2009.

Winnie as she was lovingly known by family and friends, was born in North Tonawanda to Edward C. and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Manth, nee Proefrock, on April 11, 1921. She started her career as a billing clerk for Wurlitzer and National Grinding Wheel. Her soon to be husband also worked for NGW. She married the love of her life Erwin H. Werth on July 3, 1941, five months after he proposed on Valentine's Day. After Erwin's death in 1981, Winnie became a Foster Grandparent at Meadow Elementary School. She enjoyed working with the students and teachers; it gave her purpose. She retired after 20 plus years of service. Winnie also enjoyed sewing and baking. Roger A. Manth, age 79, of North Tonawanda, died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. Born in North Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Edward and Minnie (nee Proefrock) Manth and served in the New York Air National Guard from 1949 to 1955, including his active duty during the Korean War from 1950 to 1951. A lifelong resident of North Tonawanda, Roger was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in the Town of Tonawanda and a former member of Friedens United Church of Christ, where he was a former council member. He had worked for the New York Central Railroad and then the United States Postal Service in North Tonawanda from 1959 until his retirement in 1992, and was presently employed at Shawnee Country Club. Mr. Manth was a member of the American Legion, Stephen Sikora Post #1322, the New York State Big Buck Club, the Inner Harbor Yacht Club, of which he was Commodore in 1994, International Order of Blue Gavel, which consists of past commodores of yacht clubs, and was a former member of the Swiftwater Power Squadron and the Senior Citizens in both North Tonawanda and Honeoye, NY. Roger was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved gardening, his cottage on Honeoye Lake, and boating. He was the brother of the late Burton (Mary) Manth and Gerald (Evelyn) Manth.He is survived by his wife, Arlene (nee Gorman) Manth; and a sister, Winifred (Erwin) Werth. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins, and his beloved cat, Brandy, and three other cats, Chessie, Shawnee and Taffy. Sally A. Ferguson, age 83, of Amherst, on November 24, 2022. Sally was born to the late Arnold and Margaret Proefrock and is predeceased by her siblings, Dorothy (Paul) Chapman, and Robert (Betty) Proefrock. She will be greatly missed by her husband John and her children, Gary Geartz and Sherry (Daniel) Harlach. Harold (Pete) Krull, 91, of Davenport, FL, formerly of Wheatfield, NY, died in hospice care of congestive heart failure on Tuesday, July 28th. A World War II veteran, he was awarded the Bronze Star as well as numerous other commendations. He ran the family business, Krull's Inn, on Niagara Falls Boulevard for several years and worked for Niagara Wheatfield school district until his retirement. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Betty Krull (nee Rosebrock), in April of 2014.

He is survived by two daughters, Sue (Pat) Langer of Davenport, FL; Sally Zito, of Lewiston, NY; a son, Peter Krull (Melissa Booth) of Asheville, NC; and a step-son, William (Mary) Witkopf of South Pasadena, FL. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Alice passed away January 21, 2019 in her sleep at the age of 84 under the wonderful care of Elderwood of Lockport. Alice was born June 6, 1934 at the home of her parents, Philip and Rosa (Schendel) Krull, Ellicott Creek Road, Tonawanda, NY.
Alice was proud of attending the one-room schoolhouse on Tonawanda Creek Road, under Elizabeth Bates, and later attending Parker High where she met the love of her life, Robert E. Bugenhagen. Alice and Bob married April 1, 1951 and enjoyed 45 years of marriage until his death September 17, 1996.
In her prime, Alice enjoyed gardening, scrapbooking, and quilting. She will always be remembered for her delicious carrot cake made for Jesus birthday each year. In later years she enjoyed going out for breakfast with her dear sisters.
Alice was the last born daughter of nine children. Predeceased siblings were Clarence (Mildred) Krull, Lydia (Floyd) Fiegel, Harold (Irene) Krull, George (Laura) Krull, Frances (Harry) Bachman; and brothers-in-law, Elton Bald and Frank Loiars. Surviving siblings are Gertrude (Herbert) Matheis, Dorothy Bald, and Helen Loiars. Alice was also aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Mother of Debra Rose (Michael) Allport; grandmother of Christian (Christine) Allport and Philip (Erika) Allport, all of Lockport, NY; great-grandmother of one great-grandson and awaited the summer arrival of a great-granddaughter.
At Alice's request, her body will be donated to The University at Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program. There will be no visitation or service as per Alice's wishes.

Cherry Hill - Doris J. DeVantier, age 84, of Cherry Hill passed away after a short illness on December 5, 2017. She was the devoted and loving wife of the late Roger DeVantier for 62 years. Doris was born in Niagara Falls, NY the first child of the late Clarence and Esther Wittkopp. Doris and Roger moved to Cherry Hill in 1957. After passionately raising four children (some required more effort than others), she decided to return to school and earned her diploma as a licensed practical nurse. She helped numerous patients in the Delaware Valley. She was a charter member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church where she was active and energetic in the life of the church until her death. Doris enjoyed knitting, sewing, ceramics, choir singing, and travel. Most of all she was devoted to her family. Roger and Doris especially cherished the annual vacations at Sea Isle City, NJ. They educated us about God's most incredible gift - our Family. Her amazingly strong character taught us lessons that are being passed down to multiple generations through her children and grandchildren. Her last few years of life were challenged by numerous physical and emotional heartaches. She faced all of them with a positive attitude, grace, and exceptional strength that are a true inspiration to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband Roger, daughter Joyce White and son Mark DeVantier. Left to cherish her memory include her children Wayne (Pam) DeVantier of Chesapeake, VA, Keith (Betty Jo) DeVantier of Cornelius, NC , daughter in law Vickie DeVantier of Richardson, TX, and son in law Don White of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Karen (John) Edwards of St. Davids, Ontario, Canada; her brother, Kenneth Wittkopp of Florida; and her-sister, Doris (Roger) DeVantier of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; dear friends, Joan Radel, Janice Martel, Rich and Joan Weslowski and Mary Cowling. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Albert McLean who died July 1, 1990. At Bernice's request there will be no prior visitation. Francis H. Wittkopp, age 64, of North Tonawanda, died unexpectedly, Monday, January 30, 2006 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Born August 18, 1941 in North Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Geraldine (nee Tremble) Wittkopp and had been a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda. He served in the US Air Force from 1960 until 1964, and was employed at the Durez Division of Oxychem for 30 years, before retiring in 1991. Mr. Wittkopp was a former member of the Double TT Archery Club, and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and archer.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon (nee Siegfried) Wittkopp of North Tonawanda; a son, Carl R. Wittkopp of North Tonawanda; a daughter, Colleen (Wally) Smolen of Lewiston; four grandchildren, Timothy and Nicholas Wittkopp, and Zachary and Kaleigh Smolen; his father, Raymond Wittkopp; and a sister, Shari (Edward) Garbus of North Tonawanda. Also surviving are a niece, Amy (Jason) Zwolinski, and two nephews, Michael (Kathy) Garbus and Richard Garbus.

Jacqueline ‘Susie’ Anderson, 78, of the Town of Niagara, NY, passed away on December 6, 2017.  Born in North Tonawanda, NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Florence (Proefrock) Britton.
Susie attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1956. She worked during the 1960’s in the circulation department at the Niagara Gazette and later was employed with Seager & Son Plumbing as their office manager from 1970 - 2005.
She was a lifelong resident of the Town of Niagara where she was named the Sesquicentennial Queen in 1962.  Susie was an active member of the Hope Lutheran Ladies Guild and served as their president for many years.  Susie enjoyed bowling, knitting, crocheting and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan.  Above all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by three daughters, Lynn (Collins) Beach (Glenn), Lori (Anderson) Strasburg (Bob Corsaro) and Leslie (Anderson) Yates (Rauf Yates), six grandchildren, Tyler Beach, Tara Beach, Nicole Corsaro, Devon Strasburg, Adrianna Corsaro and Gavin Yates, four siblings, Barbara (Nelson) Dockstader, Robert (Kathleen) Britton, James (Connie) Britton and Lawrence Britton and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

"Edd" Kolbe, Jr., of Fruitland Park, FL, formerly of Newfane, NY, husband of Carole (Tarno) Kolbe, entered into rest on March 17, 2021 at home with his wife by his side after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born in N. Tonawanda, NY, the son of the late Edward and Norma Louise (Siefke) Kolbe.
Edd and Carole were married on April 6, 1968 in California. He graduated from Barker high school in '61 and after graduation enlisted in the Navy serving eight years as an aviation ordnance aircrew man on the P3 Orion. He always enjoyed saying he never served aboard a ship. He retired in 1999 after 30 years at Harrison Radiator (GM). Edd enjoyed sports, playing or watching, especially the Buffalo Bills.
Besides his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his sister, Barbara (Paul) Hammond; his brother, Phillip (Virginia) Kolbe; his nieces, Linda (Scott) Greer and Tara Heitzenrater; his great-niece, Abigail (Heitzenrater) Haag; great-nephews, Craig Heitzenrater, Mark Woodard and Christopher Woodard. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Ellen Craine; and nephew, P. J. Hammond.
At Edd's request his body was donated to science and there will be no memorial service.
