    YOUNGSTOWN - Clarence Broeker, 64, of 444 Lockport St., manager of the Youngstown Cold Storage Co. here for 18 years, died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 1962) at Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital. Mr. Broeker became ill Tuesday morning at home and was taken to the hospital in the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co. ambulance. Mr. Broeker was-born in Niagara Falls on July 17, 1897, son of Albert and Augusta Broeker. The family moved to Youngstown shortly afterward. He was a life member and trustee of St. John's Lutheran Church and a member of the Exempt Fire Co. Surviving are his widow, Ada Kolloff Broeker; a son, Calvin Broeker of Lockport Street; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Thurm, North Tonawanda; four brothers, Alfred, Arthur, and Erwin Broeker, all of Youngstown, and Roy Broeker of Niagara Falls; four sisters, Mrs. Alta Cornell, Wilson, Mrs. Mabel Nichols, Lewiston, Mrs. Alice Bars, an Mrs. Florence Lloyd, both of Youngstown, and four grandchildren.     “Whenever you see a beautiful, colorful sunset in the western sky, think of me smiling down from Heaven.”Bernetta (Bernie) Broeker Kraatz, age 96, of Lewiston, passed away on June 14, 2022, in Hospice at Northgate Health Care Facility, North Tonawanda, after a brief illness. Born April 2, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Lauretta (McCollum) Broeker. Bernie was a resident of Ransomville, NY before moving to Town of Niagara in 1971, and then Lewiston in 2018.As a youngster she attended a one room school and was raised on a farm in the Town of Porter. In 1942, after Pearl Harbor, her family was forced to leave their farm on orders from the U.S. government, so that they could use the property to make TNT for the Manhattan Project.Bernie graduated in 1943 from the “Red Brick” School in Youngstown, and was a secretary at DeVeaux Military Academy from 1943 to 1947. On June 12, 1947, she married Gerald (Jerry) Kraatz, who passed in 1999. In the early 60’s she worked at the family-owned Kraatz Red & White Grocery Store in Ransomville. Later on she worked as an Account Clerk at Wilson Central School for 15 years, she retired in 1981.Bernie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown and served as a deacon. She loved playing pinochle and euchre at the Lewiston Senior Center as well as traveling and volunteering at both Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital and Memorial Medical Center.She is survived by one son, Larry Kraatz of Vero Beach, Florida, a daughter, Susan (Marty) Martinez of Youngstown, and two daughters-in-law, Sandy and Lucy Kraatz. Also seven grandchildren, Dr. Jeffrey Martinez, Misty (Gerard) Hopkins, Alaina (Senyo) Agidi, Summer Kraatz, Bethany Kraatz, Matthew (Krystal) Brown, and Stacy (Jerry Jr.) Horton, five great-grandchildren, a sister, Erva (Ray) Graf of Arizona, and one niece and nephew. Bernie was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Broeker, as well as two sons, William (Bill) and Timothy.A private graveside service will be held by her family officiated by Rev.     Helene Cornell Gough passed away December 16, 2015 at the age of 97. Born May 8, 1918 in Wilson, N.Y, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Alta Cornell.

    When she married the late John Reginald Gough, who passed away in 1984, she moved to Lockport where she lived until 1993 when she moved to Williamsville, N.Y. She worked 10 years as a bookkeeper in Lockport at the Gascoyne Dairy, Castle Dairy and retired in 1975 from Dairylea Co. Helene enjoyed walking and biking.

    She is survived by her son, Thomas J. (Cynthia) of East Amherst; and two grandchildren, Joel and Ashley. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Burgasser and Doris Cornell.

    Her body was donated to the U.B. Medical School.

    SHIRLEY'S OBITUARY

    Shirley Mae Somers passed away on June 19, 2023, at the Schoellkopf Health Center, Niagara Falls. She was 94, born on April 2, 1929, in Niagara Falls, NY. She attended the Lewiston Union School and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1946. She was on Student Council, received the Elmira Key Award, was Salutatorian of her class and a cheerleader. While in high school she worked for the famous
    Hibbard’s Custard Stand in Lewiston, NY. She attended Kelly Business Institute for Executive Secretarial and Buffalo Univ. one semester for Office Management. 
    Beginning in 1946, she was a private secretary for Leo Hapeman Real Estate and Insurance for 10 years. Subsequently, she worked for Bell Aircraft as an account clerk, as secretary to a Project Manager at Niagara Power Project and then Blauvelt Engineering Co. Finally, she joined the Jenss Dept. Store in 1966 until it’s closing. 
    She was a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Niagara Ski Club. 
    She was married on June 21, 1958, to John R. Somers who also was an avid skier, and they went on many ski trips. Shirley was a long-time parishioner of Grace Lutheran Church and was a dedicated member of the ladies aide group, the Grace Ladies.
    Shirley is predeceased by her husband, John, her parents, Philip A. Nichols and Mabel A. Broeker Nichols, brother Floyd A. Nichols and stepdaughter JoAnne Somers Greico. She is survived by her sister Gail Boyce, nieces Dawn Harris, Phyllis Baker, Lisa Sproul and nephews Shawn Sproul and Howard Jones.
    She lived on Lindbergh Ave. in LaSalle from the time she was married until she passed. 
    There will be calling hours on Friday, July 7, from 11 AM until 1 PM in the Lane Funeral Home, 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, immediately following the Funeral services will begin at 1 PM.  The interment will be in White Chapel Memorial Park.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 736 Cayuga Drive, Niagara Falls, NY 14304

    Notes:

    Warren L. “Jerry” Broeker, of the Town of Niagara, passed from this earthly life on Friday May 20, 2016 at his residence with his family at his side and while under care of Niagara Hospice. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on December 1, 1936 the son of the late Roy C. and Vera A. (Hexemer) Broeker.

    Jerry was a 1954 graduate of the former LaSalle High School and in 1955 entered Wanakena State Ranger School’s general forestry curriculum graduating in February of 1956. He was employed at Kimberly Clarke for seven months before continuing his Forestry studies at Syracuse University receiving a BSA degree in Forest Management & Forest Engineering, proudly graduating in 1960. During his college studies he was employed doing survey work for Bero Construction & Railroad Waterproofing Company.

    Following graduation, Jerry worked in the survey crew for Johnson Drake and Piper, a heavy road contractor. In 1962 he was hired as a surveyor and quantity person with the Herbert F. Darling Engineering & Construction Company and was elevated to Superintendant in 1964, a position in which he held until his retirement in 1999. Six years following his retirement, the Herbert F. Darling Company continued to call Jerry back to assist with his expertise on their major projects during the summer.

    Mr. Broeker enlisted and proudly served for six years in the US Army National Guard with the 90th Artillery and later with the 174th Armored Division in Niagara Falls until his honorable discharge in 1966.

    On April 15, 1961 he married the former Linda Ann Hepfer and were happily married for over 50 years until her passing in March of 2015.

    Survivors include his four sons: Gary (Keith Cohn) of W. Hollywood, CA; Jeff of Monument, CO; Kyle (Maria) of Doylestown, PA and Shaun of Niagara Falls, NY. Grandchildren: Jeff Jr. of the Town of Tonawanda; Shelby (Rob) Donohue of Niagara Falls, NY; Matthew & Gabrielle of Monument, CO and Maxxim & Skyler of Doylestown, PA. a great-grandson Julian of the Town of Tonawanda and a sister Patti Jean (Bill) Shaefer of N. Tonawanda, NY.

    Also surviving is Jerry’s good friend and companion Dorothy Sorley who on May 14th of this year entered into and celebrated a Commitment Ceremony. In addition, he will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Jerry was a longtime and active member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer and at various times a trustee position for 12 years. He also served as a volunteer with the Escort Department and as the Care Van driver at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for 14 years. He was an avid enthusiast of all sports however, enjoyed participating in bowling, golf, basketball and softball.

    The family will be present Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Thursday morning from 10 AM to 12 Noon in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Friends are invited to services on Friday at 11 AM in the First United Methodist Church, 8210 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14304 with the Rev. Jean Edmister officiating. Private burial committal services will be held in Niagara Falls Memorial Park Cemetery, Town of Lewiston at the convenience of the family.
