Mr. Behm failed to rally.
Born in Germany, Mr. Behm
came to America 60 years ago and
located in Buffalo. He continued
his residence there until 45 years
ago, when he located in Wheatfleld.

John L. Behm, 59, farmer, of
the Purdy road, town of Lockport,
took his life by hanging late Saturday
night after believing he had
succeeded in throttling his wife,
Clara, to death.
Mrs. Behm lay unconscious for
nearly 46 minutes before she regained
her senses and discovered
that her husband had hanged himself,
suspending his body by a cord
which he had attached to the bedpost
of his bed. His head was
Only 18 inches from the floor.
There had been no quarrel before
the tragedy, Mrs. Behm told
Dr. Ferdinand A. Kittinger, coroner.
She and her husband had spent the
evening together In their home, she
said. Her husband was in exceptionally
good spirits, she declared,
although he had brooded considerably
in recent weeks over his failure
to find employment. He had
been out of work for several
months she said.
After an evening of amiable conversation,
she and her husband decided
Just before midnight to retire.
Accordingly, she went to her bedroom
on the second floor, while he
retired to a room which he occupied
on the first floor.
"We've Got to Die."
Shortly afterwards, Mrs.
said, she beard her husband calling
for her.
As she entered his bedroom, she
told Dr. Kittinger, her husband
leaped at her and seised her by the
throat, at the same time crying:
"We've got to die, Clara."
He repeated the cry over and over
again as she vainly struggled to
free herself from his grasp, she said.
Then she lapsed into unconscious-
ness.
Regaining her senses about 45
minutes later, her first thought was
that her experience had been just
a terrible nightmare, Mrs. Behm related.
The severe throbbing In her
throat and the sight of her husband's
body, hanging from the bedpost
in his bedroom, awakened her
to the reality of her experience, ahe
said.
Touching her husband's body and
discovering it to be already cold,
Mrs. Behm ran in terror to the
home of a neighbor, where she
telephoned the sheriff's office.
Coroner Issues Certificate.
Deputies Oeorge Rawlings and
James Duffy hurried to the scene
of the tragedy. They summoned
the coroner, who ordered the' body
removed to the undertaking parlors
of Conover and Reynolds, 46 East
avenue.
Dr. Kittinger, after examining the
body and hearing Mrs. Behm's story,
issued a verdict of suicide by hanging.

Mrs. Emma Strassburg, 44 years old, wife of William G. Strassburg, died Saturday afternoon at her home, 61 Jackson avenue, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Strassburg was born in the town of Wheatfield and lived at St. Johnsburg all her life until removing to North Tonawanda a week ago.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Strassburg is survived by five daughters, the Misses Regina, Loretta, Irene, Lucy and Ida Strassburg, one son, William G. A r t h u r P. Lemke, 59, of 310 Fredericka St., North
Tonawanda, who devoted much of 18 of his last 23
year to city government, died early today after an ap-
parent heart seizure at his home.
Mayor Durkee ordered the flag
in front of the North Tonawanda
City Hall lowered to half-mast
in tribute to Mr. Lemke, who
was elected to the Common
Council nine times.
He was stricken with the fatal
attack shortly before 3 a.m. to-
d a y F i r e m e n administered oxy-
gen, but he was dead on arrival
DeGraff Memorial Hospital.
His death came less than two
weeks before he wa to have
been honored at a testimonial
dinner May 21 by the North Tona-
wanda Republican City Com-
mittee.
Since 1940, when he was first
elected to the Common Council,
he devoted most of his time and
effort to the North Tonawanda
political scene. A republican, he
twice served two-year terms as
Common Council president.
He retired from politics lat
Dec. 31 at the conclusion of his
ninth term as alderman from the
Fourth Ward.
Long a proponent of the city
manager plan of municipal gov-
erment, Mr. Lemke was an out-
standing legislator.
A native of North Tonawanda,
he was born in the Fourth Ward
and attended local schools. He
had been employed at the Buffalo
Pumps Division of Buffalo
Forge, North Tonawanda, for
the past 45 years.
While on the council, he hed-
ed every committee at one time
or another and was respected
by all who served with him.
He was a member of the Ton-
wandas Chamber of Commerce,
DeGraff M e m o r i a l Hospital
Board of Trustees, Gratwick
Hose Company, the Firemen's
Benevolent Association and St.
Mark Lutheran Church and
president of the church Christian
stewardship committee.
He is survived by his wife.

She was a member of the Sanborn Senior Citizens. She enjoyed sewing and ceramics. Mrs. Wendt was the widow of the late Benjamin Wendt, who died in 1972. She is survived by two sons, Robert J. Wendt and Ronald P. Wendt, both of Sanborn; a daughter, Annette Stahl of Sanborn; a brother, John Breitenbach of Niagara FaJls; a sister, Katherine Pokelwaldt of Niagara Falls; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Louis Breitenbach, Walter Breitenbach, Frederick Breitenbach, Henry Breitenbach, Margaret Bayer and Else Bayer. Born in the Town of Wheatfield, he had been a resident of Kenmore for more than 55 years and of Niagara Falls from 1992 until 1999. He was the husband of Lauretta M. (nee Guinther) Breitenbach, who died in 1992 and was the son of the late Philip and Augusta Breitenbach. Mr. Breitenbach had been employed by National Grinding Wheel in North Tonawanda for 36 years, retiring in 1970 and was a member of Salem United Church of Christ. He is survived by his sister, Katherine Pokelwaldt of Lockport, NY. and was the brother of the late Louis, Frederick, Henry and Walter Breitenbach, Anna Wendt, Margaret Bayer and Elsie Bayer, also survived by many nieces and nephews.The family will receive relatives and friends on WEDNESDAY from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, 114 Morgan Street in Tonawanda, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. following the visitation. 9/12/2004 LOCKPORT - Catherine C. Pokelwaldt, a homemaker and a defense worker during World War II, died Thursday in Briody Health Care Facility after a long illness. She was 97.
Mrs. Pokelwaldt was born Catherine Breitenbach in Wheatfield and raised in a farmhouse on the Amherst side of Tonawanda Creek. She lived most of her adult life in Niagara Falls, moving to Lockport at age 90. She had lived in the nursing home for more than a year.
During World War II, she worked as a riveter, assembling airplanes at Bell Aircraft Corp. in Wheatfield.
For most of her life she was a homemaker, enjoying what she called her "fancy work": knitting and crocheting, especially doilies and tablecloths.
Her family said she was a fine baker, specializing in a sour cream cookie recipe handed down from her grandmother. She also enjoyed playing cards.
Her husband of 43 years, Edward, died in 1970.
Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Palmiter of Pendleton, Audrey Smith of Ransomville, Carol Burnsworth of Lockport and Beverly Blaise of Prospect Heights, ILl.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at noon Monday in Grace Lutheran Church, 736 Cayuga Drive, Niagara Falls. Burial will be in Wheatfield Cemetery.

Gerhard Henry "Giggs" Behm, 91, of White Bear Lake, Minn., died Thursday, Feb. 21. He and his twin sister, Gertrude, were born Oct. 30, 1916, in Hudson to George and Irene (Kahmeyer) Behm. Gerhard graduated from Hudson High School in 1936 and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Blue Lake Camp near Minocqua. He served in World War II in the 32nd Division of the U.S. Army on various islands in the Pacific Theater. After discharge he married Elaine Jeanette Legrid at their family farm in Star Prairie. They raised their family in rural Lake Elmo, Minn., and she died in 1985. He later married Iona Metzger. For most of his career he worked as a carpenter for Roy Shelgren Construction. Among those preceding him in death were siblings, Adella Krech, Gertrude Quarberg, Edith Swanson, Arthur Behm and Wallace Behm. Memorials are preferred to VFW Post 2115, Hudson. Evelyn moved to Barker when she married the late Norman Capell on August 9, 1941. She especially enjoyed the company of her granddaughter.

Evelyn is survived by her children Pamela (Peerce Lake) Harper of Florida and Douglas (Sue) Capell of Gasport; grandmother of Matthew (Julianna Kiley) and Maggie Capell; brother-in-law Everett Fitchlee; and Ella. She was pre-deceased by twin sons Dale and David, siblings Elton Behm, Geraldine Waters, Mildred Eick, Delbert Behm, Ruth Fitchlee, Iverna Behm, Harold Behm, and Marilyn Gauda.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jeanne (nee Martin) Behm. She was predeceased by her daughters, Diane Taylor of North Dakota, Nancy (James) Stephanski of Town of Wheatfield; and a son, William (Linda) Taylor Jr. of East Shelby, NY. Florence was also predeceased by her brothers, Daniel, LeRoy, Elmer and Earl Heidenfeldt; and sisters, Gertrude Meisenberg, Gladys Goodman and Irene Donner.

Florence Taylor is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Walter) Hird of Medina, NY, Valerie (William) Carr of the Town of Wheatfield. Florence devoted her life to her family. She loved to cook, bake, sew, read and play her Wurlitzer Organ. She is survived by fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons, one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

William A. Strassburg, 85, a carpenter, farmer and plumber, died in his Randall Road home Friday (Oct. 25, 1996) under the care of Niagara Hospice.
Born in Wheatfield, Strassburg had lived on Randall Road since his marriage to the former Ethel Schultz in 1938. For many years, Strassburg was a self-employed carpenter and builder. He also was a vegetable farmer for about 15 years, selling produce at the farmers market in Buffalo.
In 1967, he joined the local staff of the state Parks and Recreation Department as a plumber, retiring after 10 years.
Strassburg was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at North Ridge, Cambria, and a former member of the Wilson Lions Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Timothy of Wilson and Robert of Ashland, Ky.; a daughter, Karen J. Carr of Oswego; two sisters, Irene Willert and Ida Hill of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Peter's Lutheran Church at North Ridge, 4169 Church Road, Cambria. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery

Lester H. Warblow, 92, formerly of Pine Street, North Tonawanda, died Saturday (Dec. 5, 1998) in Crestwood Health Care Facility, Wheatfield, where he had been a patient since May 21, 1997.
Warblow was born in North Tonawanda. He worked for the New York Central Railroad from 1923 to 1971. He was a member of Local 36, Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.
After his retirement, Warblow spent much of his time refinishing furniture and caning chairs.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, North Tonawanda, and the Lutheran Laymen's League.
Survivors include a son, David; a brother, Glenwood; and a sister, Arlene Harms, all of North Tonawanda; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he had served as an elder. He also was an active volunteer with Tri-Community Ambulance Service and enjoyed gardening and cooking.

WHEATFIELD - Harold E. Pankow, a longtime member of St. Johnsburg Fire Company, died Saturday in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, after a brief illness. He died a day before his 83rd birthday.
Mr. Pankow was born in North Tonawanda and was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Church. He attended parochial school.
He worked at National Grinding Wheel, Walck's Dairy and the state Department of Transportation, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Pankow had been a fire company member for 50 years. He enjoyed doing crafts and spending his winters in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Jennis A. Walck; a daughter, Betty Cash-Willis of Fort Myers, Fla.; a son, Robin of Rome; two sisters, Lorena Heuer of Port Orange, Fla., and Jane Heuer of Wheatfield; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

WHEATFIELD — Jane E. Heuer (Pankow), age 84, of Wheatfield, was called, peacefully, to her heavenly home on April 18, 2011, at her residence. Born in the Town of Wheatfield, NY on January 31, 1926 to the late William and Charlotte (McGill) Pankow. She was a 1944 graduate of North Tonawanda High School, a lifelong member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Wheatfield, was a loving and devoted mother, and enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include four children, Curtis (Jeanne) Heuer, Mary (Henry) Striewing, Mark (Minerva) Heuer and Steven (Ann) Heuer; five grandchildren, Nathan Heuer, Michael and Matthew Striewing, Virginia Kahmann and Jonathan Heuer; a great-granddaughter, Briahnna Lynn and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband, Harold H. Heuer on August 29, 2010; four brothers, George, Vernon, Wallace and Harold Pankow; and two sisters, Josephine Moll and Lorena Heuer.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Ronald Oravec, on Thursday at 4:00 PM in St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, corner Niagara Falls Blvd. and Ward Road. Richard "Dick" R. Hardy passed away on February 2, 2013, age 90, born in North Tonawanda, NY, son of the late Henry John and Viola (Pieper) Hardy. Survived by his beloved partner and constant companion, Gloria Lichorobic of North Tonawanda; husband of the late Letha (Thom) Hardy; husband of the late Minnie (Oliver Bray) Hardy; husband of the late Betty (Martin Minnie) Hardy; brother of the late LaVearn Hardy, the late Iverna Hardy, and Dorothy Hardy. Dick was a retired welder and truck driver, having become well-known across town while working many years for Century Auto Parts.
