Esther R. Stange , a retired Niagara Savings and Loan employee, died Wednesday (July 12, 2000) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. She was 87.
Born Esther Behnke in Cambria, she graduated from Lockport High School and worked at Buffalo Bolt for several years as a bookkeeper. She retired in 1978 from Niagara Savings and Loan in North Tonawanda.
Mrs. Stange was a member of the Altar Society of St. John Lutheran Church of Wheatfield, where she helped with the school lunch program. She also was active with the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the St. Johnsburg Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and was an elections inspector.
Her husband, Norman, died in 1961.
Survivors include a daughter, Norma Wallace of Jackson, Tenn.; a son, Douglas of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John Church, Niagara Falls Boulevard and Ward Road, Wheatfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Edward R. Behnke, 74, of Ridge Road, a mechanical engineer at Columbus McKinnon Corp. in Amherst, died Friday (July 2, 1999) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a long illness. Behnke, who was known as Ted, was born in Cambria. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Buffalo, where he was a member of Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honor society. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where he served on several boards.
Survivors include his wife, the former Lillian "Skip" Strablow; three daughters, Gail Dugue of Raleigh, N.C., Barbara of Niagara Falls and Kim Bigelow of Cary, N.C.; a sister, Esther Stange of Sanborn; and two grandchildren.

Shirley H. Richardson entered into rest November 5, 2016 after a long illness.

Born in Lockport, NY, she was the daughter of Rudolph and Viola (Urtel) Heiman.

Shirley was predeceased by her husbands, Jerry Martin (1954) and Philip Richardson (1980). She was also predeceased by her brothers, Wallace and Norman Heiman, and her sister, Verna Liskoff, all of Lockport; and her dear aunt, Eloise "Cookie" Rutland of Lockport and Leesburg, FLA.

A graduate of Lockport High School, Shirley went on to study business at the University of Buffalo. She was employed at Bell & Howell in Chicago and later at the Upson Co. in Lockport. She left her job at Upson Co. in 1962 to raise her family, while gaining expertise in portfolio investment.

Shirley enjoyed golf, bowling, playing cards with her friends, going on outings with the Red Hat Society and Newfane Seniors, and was a member of Club 60 throughout the 1960s and 70s. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she also volunteered at Lockport Memorial Hospital, where she was a member of the Guild, and The Salvation Army.

She is survived by her son, Chuck Richardson; daughter, Linda Michael of Bowling Green, KY; three grandchildren, Tyler J. Michael of Williamsville, Lindsey Bendel and Brittany Michael of Bowling Green, KY; and one great-grandchild, Dylan J. Michael-Robb of Williamsville. Shirley is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

LEWISTON — Russell E. Urtel, age 89, of the Town of Cambria, entered into rest on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. Born May 21, 1922 in Wilson, Russ was the son of the late Edward L. and Mabel I. (Rohring) Urtel.

He married Dorothy (Flagler) Urtel June 20, 1942, at Exley United Methodist Church of Wilson. Dorothy died December 1, 1993. A WWII Veteran, Russ served from 1943 until 1945. He was in the European Theatre of operation in the 113th Mechanized Cavalry and as a truck driver on the Red Ball Express for the 3888 Quartermaster Truck Company. While in the service he traveled to 11 different countries. He had worked at General Motors Chevrolet Plant in Tonawanda as a Quality Analyst and Inspection Supervisor, retiring in 1987 after 47 years. Russ enjoyed spending time with his family and working on his farm. Russ was a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of North Ridge, past member of the Wilson VFW and past member of the American Legion. He also was a member of the Chevrolet Retiree Club. Russ enjoyed going to the Newfane Golden Agers and deer hunting. He had lived in Cambria the past 67 years; previously of Wilson.

Russ is survived by his children, William R. (Shirley) Urtel of Lockport, Rosemary (Michael) Bohlman of Ripley, Thomas E. Urtel of Florida, Barbara (Lance) Cronshaw of Newfane, Sharon (Sean) Healy of Wilson and the late Robert J. Urtel. Brother of Harold “Dolly” Urtel of Middleport, Helen Bye of Newfane, Elton “Bob” (Phyllis) Urtel of North Tonawanda, Hazel (Robert) Walker of Olcott and the late Delilah Grzybowski and Lawrence Urtel. Eleven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and dear friend, Beatrice Zastrow survive him. A grandchild, Amy Raynor, predeceased Russell.

RANSOMVILLE — Delilah (Urtel) Grzybowski, age 85, of Ransomville, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, October 17, 2010 in the Eastern Niagara Hospital in Newfane, after a brief illness.

Delilah was born June 4, 1925 in Wilson, the eldest daughter of the late Edward and Mabel (Rohring) Urtel. She attended a one room school house on Chestnut Rd. in Wilson where she excelled, especially in spelling, and had won the Buffalo Evening News Spelling Bee. Delilah graduated from Wilson High School in 1942 at age 16, the first in her family to do so. She then attended business school where she earned her comptometer license. Delilah married Max J. Grzybowski on June 24, 1950. Max predeceased her on March 11, 1987. She was employed in the payroll office at Harrison Radiator in the 1950’s until she left to raise her family, and was a Niagara County Election Inspector for 45 years.

Delilah enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening and was heavily involved with local 4H Programs with her daughters in the 60’s and 70’s. She was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at North Ridge, St. Peter’s Ladies Aide Society, the Wilson Lakeshore Mother’s Club and the Ransomville Rural Retirees. Delilah loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren whom she loved dearly and was so very proud of. She never missed a play, dance recital, concert or graduation ceremony, and attended as many sports events as time would allow.

She is survived by her four daughters, Mary Jo (Kenneth) Higginbotham of Santa Clarita, CA, Janice (James) Sievert and Maxanne (Bill) Rees, both of Wilson, and Gretchen (Leo) Fournier of Ransomville; her grandchildren, Scott and Michelle Higginbotham, Joe and Jackie Sievert, Mercedees, Trey and Quinn Rees, Cooper, Logan and Bailey Fournier; her great-grandchildren, Shaianne Higginbotham, Serena Gelfman and Jaden Higginbotham. She was the beloved sister of Harold Urtel, Russell (Dorothy) Urtel, Helen (William) Bye, Elton "Bob" (Phyllis) Urtel, Hazel (Robert) Walker and the late Lawrence (Ann) Urtel. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

"Bob" Urtel, age 86, of North Tonawanda, September 13, 2013 in Northgate Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness. Bob was very proud of his service to his country. He served in the Navy Air Force for two years following WWII, flying patrol over the Gulf of Mexico. During these years he says he learned more than he ever did in life. Bob contracted multiple sclerosis while still in the Navy in 1946. He retired from General Motors in 1974 after 27 years of service. Bob had been an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Tonawanda Sportsman's Club and was an avid outdoorsman. He was also a member of the MS Society and the American Legion Post #1451. Beloved husband of Phyllis (nee Simmons) Urtel for over 62 years. Dear father of Nancy Meyerhofer and David (Kelly) Urtel, all of North Tonawanda. Grandfather of Michael Meyerhofer, Lindsay (Timothy) Bozek and Leah Urtel; great-grandfather of Lillian and Valerie Bozek. OLCOTT — Hazel U. (Urtel) Walker of Olcott, entered into rest on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Buffalo General Hospital. Born in Ransomville, she was the daughter of Edward L. and Mabel I. (Rohring) Urtel.

Hazel graduated from Wilson High School. She married Robert Walker on April 12, 1952 at St. Peters Lutheran Church. Owner of Flora Hatch, an elegant apparel store which operated in both Lockport and Williamsville for over 50 years, Hazel brought her sense of style and fashion to her many loyal customers. Hazel was a former member of Zonta, DLBA, Habitat for Humanity, Concordia Lutheran Church and Lockport Town and Country Club. Hazel enjoyed spending time golfing, (hole in one at Lockport Country Club), extensive travel, entertaining, gardening, skiing and boating.

Hazel is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert; a son, James Walker; daughters, Jayne (Doug) Lloyd and Jody Siddall; grandsons, Barrett Lloyd and Parker Siddall. Hazel was predeceased by her granddaughter, Paige Siddall; sister to Elton Urtel, Dolly Urtel, Helen Bye and the late Russell Urtel, Delilah Grzybowski and Lawrence Urtel. Hazel is also survived by several nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Lois M. (Urtel) Oldenburg, 87, of Mentor for the past 55 years, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018 at Lake West Medical Center, Willoughby, OH. She was born September 19, 1931 in North Tonawanda, N.Y.

She was very devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends. She enjoyed socializing with people, making personal connections, and communicating regularly through letter writing, cards, and time spent together. She was a proud supporter of the Mentor Schools and attended many events over the past 50 years as a Mentor resident.

Survivors include her children, Eric (Aura) Oldenburg, Evan A. Koehler, Elise (Rich) Sivcovich and Gary Oldenburg, and grandchildren, Miles and Dillon Oldenburg and Caroline, Anna and Grace Sivcovich. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years: Gerald F. "Jerry" Oldenburg, and her mother: Hilda (Neil) Roberts.

JACKSON, TN — Mrs. Norma Jean Stange Wallace, age 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at her residence, after a long illness. Norma was born in Niagara Falls, NY on Oct. 13, 1942, the daughter of the late Esther Behnke Stange and Norman Stange.

She graduated from Erie Co. Community College and Lambuth College with a B.S. in business in 1995. Norma retired from Lambuth University as Director of Financial Services in 2008.

She enjoyed traveling to Western New York to visit family and she also loved attending her grandchildren's sports activities.

Norma is survived by her husband of 52 years, Edward G. Wallace of Jackson, TN; three sons, Michael and wife Sandy of Lockport, NY; Mark and wife LaRoyce of Jackson, TN; Matt and wife Sara of Jackson, TN; seven grandchildren, JaNessa Vance, Robyn Wallace, Sean Wallace, Ashley Wallace, Nathan Wallace, Anna Wallace, Drake Wallace; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Broyles and Braxton Mitchell. She was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Stange.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 24, from 5-7 PM at Lambuth Memorial United Methodist Church, 160 Campbell St., Jackson, TN. A private service for the family will be held. Jimmy attended the Sunshine School in Lockport and was one of the initial residents of the Developmental Center in West Seneca. Always in the lead, Jim later moved to various group homes where he participated in sheltered workshops, attended camp, and enjoyed being part of the community. Jim was currently attending the day program at Opportunities Unlimited on Niagara Falls Blvd while he resided in Amherst.
Jimmy enjoyed spending time with his family,holidays, flying kites, and music. He touched the lives of many with his humor, generous spirit, and simple life.
Surviving Jimmy is his sister Jayne (Douglas) Lloyd of Lockport and nephews: Barrett Lloyd and Parker Siddall. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his sister Jody Siddall and niece Paige Siddall.

Jody R. (Walker) Siddall, age 52, of Lockport, entered into rest on Monday, January 21, 2013. Born on November 28, 1960 in Newfane, she is the daughter of Robert Walker and the late Hazel (Urtel) Walker.
Jody graduated from Newfane Central Schools in 1978 where she served as class president. She went on to graduate from Tobe-Coburn in NYC with a degree in fashion merchandising and also attended NCCC where she received her degree in Psychology. Jody was a volunteer at Niagara County Jail where she distributed items to the women. She enjoyed skiing, boating and bicycling.
Jody is survived by her son, Parker Siddall. She was predeceased by her daughter, Paige Siddall. Daughter of Robert Walker and the late Hazel Walker. Sister of Jayne (Doug) Lloyd and James Walker; and aunt to Barrett Lloyd. Jody is also survived by aunts, uncles and many cousins.

Rob moved to San Diego in 1982 to work for Foodmaker (Jack-in-the-Box) before opening Rob Batt Design in 1985. He was self-employed for 16 years. In 2001 he began his favorite position as Associate Director of Planning and Construction for Housing-Dining-Hospitality at University of California - San Diego. Rob loved the outdoors and every activity his children were involved in. His creative mind, sense of humor, generous heart, strength and devotion to family and friends endeared him to all. Survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan; daughter, Hannah; son, Nicholas; parents, Delores and Robert Batt of Clearwater, FL (formerly of Tonawanda); sister, Kathleen Patrick of Lockport, NY; nephews, Steven Ford (Barbara), Douglas Ford, and Eric Ford (Traci); and Godmother, Janet Holler of Tonawanda. Renee Marie (Behnke) Sperrazza, 51, of Wheatfield, December 23, 2017 after a lengthy illness. Renee was born in North Tonawanda, NY on September 9, 1966 to Ronald F. and Mary M (Haba) Behnke. Renee worked in the medical field for over 25 years, she was an avid Buffalo Bills and Sabres Fan, in her spare time she volunteered and donated to numerous charitable organizations and enjoyed playing golf. 
Renee is survived by her loving husband Jerome "Jerry" Sperrazza, mother of Nicholas and Thomas Sperrazza, precious daughter of Mary M. (Haba) Behnke, and the late Ronald Behnke. 
Friends may call Thursday from 2-8 PM at the Wattengel Funeral Home, 533 Meadow Drive, North Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held Friday at 10 AM. Flowers gratefully declined.

Douglas R. Ford, age 58, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2022, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Takoma Park, MD, and resided in Lockport, NY. Doug loved his family dearly. His humor and quick wit will be missed by everyone who knew him. Beloved son to Kathleen Patrick and the late Charles Ford. Cherished brother to Eric and Steven (Barbara) Ford. Loving uncle to Carolyn, Suzanne, Allison, and Mitchell Ford, of Ohio. A private family service will be held in remembrance of Doug.
