Hickory - The Rev. John Charles Moebius passed away Dec. 26, 2009, at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. The Rev. Moebius was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late John E. and Ester Moebius. He was a member and Pastor Emeritus to Millers Lutheran Church. Pastor Moebius served in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was a World War II veteran. He saw overseas action in the Phillipines. He attained rank of Master Sergeant. After World War II, Pastor Moebius attended and graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in 1949. He graduated from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus in 1952. He served the Lutheran Church for more than 55 years. His first church was Southpark Lutheran Church in Buffalo, N.Y. He served Southpark from 1952 to 1956. He then accepted a call to Holy Trinity in 1956. Then in 1962, the Rev. Moebius accepted a call to Millers Lutheran Church on Springs Road.The Rev. Moebius retired from Millers in the summer of 1986. Upon retirement the Rev. Moebius was still active in the Lutheran Church by serving as interim pastor to churches in Mount Holly, Unity Lutheran in Hickory and Taylorsville. He also served as visitation pastor to Friendship Lutheran. Pastor Moebius also enjoyed volunteering time working the voting booths at local precincts and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Edith Buerger Moebius of Hickory; a sister, Jean Moebius Millville of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; sons, Charles Burford and wife, Lillian, of Brainard, Minn., and Joel C. Moebius and wife, Melanie, of Hickory; daughters, Beth Burford Gast of Wheeling, W.Va., Wendy Moebius Bauer and husband, Mark, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Paula Moebius Williams and husband, Ken, of Naples, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, John C. Moebius Jr.; a daughter, Anne Moebius Cooper; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Moebius; and a sister, Mildred Moebius Maginn of Niagara Falls, N.Y. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home, Hickory. The funeral services will be held at Millers Lutheran Church, Springs Road, at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009. The services will be officiated by the Revs. Robert Alle, Luther Knauff and Stanley Stiver. Burial will take place in the church cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by members of the Hickory American Legion Post 48.
