MARGARETVILLE - Naomi J. Weiss of Margaretville died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at Mountainside Care Center, where she had resided for the past year and a half.
Born Jan 11, 1929, in Plainfield, N.J., she was the daughter of Dr. Edward A. and Naomi Wish Kircher. She was a 1946 graduate of Plainfield High School. She received her bachelor of arts degree in Bible and religion, with a minor in journalism, at Syracuse University in the class of 1950, where she was member of the National Bible Honor Society, Theta Chi Beta. She later went on to receive her Master of Library Science degree and New York State Librarian certification through Oneonta and Geneseo State University colleges.
It was at Syracuse, at a freshman “mixer” dance, that a gentleman came up to her, asked her to dance, and they became a couple for eternity. She went on to marry this gentleman on July 29, 1950. It was on that day that she became Mrs. Alton Weiss.
After raising her children to school age, she took a job working for several years as an aide, then, she became librarian at Margaretville Central school until her retirement in 1986. Soon after retirement, she became the librarian for Fairview Public Library, where she remained until her second retirement in 2001. She oversaw the library’s relocation from Arkville to its location in Margaretville, and very much enjoyed the interaction with people.
During her high school years, Naomi had been a World War II volunteer in airplane spotters program along the east coast, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. She had also served as a camp counselor for one summer. In Margaretville she had been a member of the Junior Home Bureau and served many years as a newspaper “Local and Personal” correspondent.
She was also on the Girl Scouts committee and served twice as a Boy Scout Cub Den mother.
Mrs. Weiss is survived by her husband of 64 years, Alton M. Weiss; two sons, William E. Weiss of Titusville, Fla., and Donald P. Weiss of Margaretville; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth (Stephen) Haffly of Wake Forest, N.C., Mrs. Lisa (Thomas) Ruane of Peoria, Ariz., and Marta Weiss (Dan Killmer) of Wassaic. Obituary
Weiss, William "Bill" Edward TITUSVILLE, Fla. William Edward Weiss, 63, of Titusville, died on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at the Merritt Island Health Care facility in Merritt Island, Fla. He was a retired computer programmer for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles in Albany, before moving to Florida seven years ago to escape the cold weather. Born on September 14, 1951, in Buffalo, he was the first child of Alton M. Weiss and the late Naomi J. Weiss. He was a 1969 graduate of Margaretville Central School and went on for two years to attend Albany State University. After school and several fill-in jobs, he started with the DMV as a computer punch card processor, moving up the ladder until he eventually became a programmer. He was instrumental in the development of computer programs that tied the DMV records together with other states, and eventually with some other countries. As a youth, Bill was a Boy Scout and earned his God and Country award. He very much enjoyed being on the camp staff at Beach Mountain Scout Camp in Sullivan County for several summers. What started out as a Cub Scout project to put together a stamp collection turned out to be a lifelong interest for Bill. He has a vast stamp collection from all parts of the globe and spent many hours working on his collection. Mr. Weiss is survived by his father, Alton M. Weiss of Margaretville; one brother, Donald P. Weiss of Margaretville; three sisters, Ruth C. (Stephen L.) Haffly of Wake Forest, N.C., Lisa K. (Thomas P.) Ruane of Peoria, Ariz., and Marta B. Weiss (Dan Kilmer) of Wassaic. Also surviving are his aunt Ann Kircher of Scotch Plains, N.J.; three nephews, two nieces, three great-nephews and three great-nieces. He was predeceased by his mother, Naomi (Kircher) Weiss. A memorial service will be held in Margaretville in the spring at the same time as his mother is buried. In lieu of flowers, if one wishes, contributions may be made in his name to the Boy Scouts of America, Otschodela Council, Oneonta, N.Y. or the Fairview Public Library in Margaretville, where his mother was the librarian for a number of years. Any expressions of sympathy should be sent to his brother at 1630 South Side Road, Margaretville, NY. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
