Woman Burned to Death in Attempt to Save Children
Mrs. Mary Badrow, of Washington Street Bergholtz, Was Safely Out But Returned For Youngster - Husband Badly Burned Trying to Save Her
Bergholtz - Mrs. Emelia Badrow, 58 years old of Washington road, Bergholtz, was burned to death in a fire that destroyed her home at 5 o'clock this morning, and her husband, John Badrow, 60 years old, was severely burned about the head, hands and arms in a vain attempt to save his wife from the flames. Mrs. Badrow was safely out of the burning building once but returned to the house in an attempt to save her daughter, Esther, 16 years old, and her grandson, Howard, 5 years old who were still in the dwelling, when she was trapped by the flames and met her death. Firemen saved the two children. The fire was caused by the explosion of a kerosene stove, which was lighted by Mrs. Badrow to prepare breakfast. The Badrow home was a story and a half frame building and the flames swept rapidly through the lower part. Rudolph Badrow, 25 years old, a son, when aroused by the fire, jumped from an upper story bedroom window and sounded an alarm, which brought the Bergholtz, St. Johnsburg and Nashville volunteer firemen to the scene of the blaze with their motor apparatus. The blaze had gained such a start, however, that the firemen were unable to save the house or its contents. The fire loss was estimated at $5,000. Mr. Badrow was aroused by the explosion and mad his exit from the building safely, only to return again in search of his wife and sustain severe burning. The Badrow family was well known in Bergholtz. The spectacular and fatal fire attracted nearly the whole countryside to Bergholtz. Mrs. Badrow's body was not recovered until the fire was extinguished. Her husband made an heroic attempt to save her life. He reached the woman's body and was dragging it to safety when it slipped away from him and he was again unable to reach it in the dense smoke and fierce flames. Mrs. Badrow was born in the town of Wheatfield. Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, the Misses Esther and Emma at home, Mrs. Arthur Licht of Lockport road and Mrs. Herman Wrege of North Tonawanda; one son, Rudolph, 10 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Emma Conrad of Bergholtz and Mrs. Alter Gierke of Bergholtz, and one brother, August Karing of Bergholtz. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from the Licht home at 2 o'clock, standard time, and at 2:30 from St. Jacob's church, Rev. Otto Bruss officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's (Jacob's) Cemetery.

North Tonawanda, Oct 6 - John F. Badrow. 53 years old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Badrow of Bergholtz, is the second youth from that hamlet to die in the present war. He was killed in action on September 8th and news of his death was received by his father here today from the war department. Badrow was one of the drafted men and left Lockport with the county contingent in February. He was employed in the lumber yard of A. Weston & Son here up to the time he was called. He was the seventh man from this vicinity to meet death in battle.

Edward H. Badrow Dies At Bergholtz - Funeral Tomorrow.
Bergholtz, March 18 (Special) - Edward H. Badrow, 27 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Badrow of Bergholtz died at his home this morning after a lingering illness. He was born in Bergholtz and had lived there all his life. Besides his parents, four sisters. Mrs. Arthur Licht of Shawnee; Mrs. Herman Wrege of North Tonawanda and Misses Emma and Esther Badrow of Bergholtz, and two brothers, John. Jr. of Camp Devens. Mass., and Rudolph Badrow of Bergholtz survive. The funeral will be held at the Saint
Jacobs church at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Otto Bruss officiating. Burial will be in the Saint Jacob's cemetery.

SANBORN - Mrs. Elsie Licht, 60, of Lockport Rd., died Friday( May 6, 1960) at Kenmore Mercy H o s p i t al after a three-month illness. She died moments after being admitted to the hospital Friday. Born In Bergholtz, Jan. 24, 1900, Mrs. Licht was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Badrow. She was married at 18 to-Arthur Licht, who died in 1956. They had resided on their farm in Lockport
Rd. Mrs. Licht was a member of St. P a u l ' s L u t h e r an Church, Tonawanda. . 22-Rudolph Badrow, 52, of Lock-
port Rd., Town of Niagara, died
suddenly yesterday at Mt. St.
Mary's Hospital, Niagara Falls.
Mr. Badrow was bornn in Berg-
holz, the son of the late John and
Emelie Karing Badrow. For several
years he was employed by the Wur-
litzer Co., North Tonawanda, but
most of his life he was a farmer.
he made his home for the last
30 years with Mr. and Mrs. Wil-
liad DeVandier, Lockport Rd.
Funeral services will be held at
his late home at 2 p.m. Thursday
and at 2:30 p.m. at St. Peter's
Lutheran Church, Walmore Rd.,
with thc Rev. Martin Pempcit Of-
1 ficiating.
Interment will be in St. Peter's
Cemetery.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs.
Elsie Licht, Sanborn; Mrs. Esther
Kurth, Lockport and Mrs. Emma

Harold A. Badrow, former
chief of the City of Tonawanda
Fire Department, was killed
early yesterday when his car
left Creekside Drive in the Town
of Tonawanda and slammed into
a tree.
Mr. Badrow, 53, was
pronounced dead at the scene by
Dr. James J. Creighton, an Erie
County medical examiner. The
victim suffered a fractured skull
and died of internal bleeding, a
later autopsy showed.
The accident occurred at
about 4:35 a.m. near Willow
Drive, police said. Mr. Badrow's
car traveled about 125 feet along
the shoulder before crashing
into the tree.
The victim was alone at the
time.
Police said the unlighted
winding road was slick because
of rain.
Mr. Badrow served as fire
chief from 1072 until early last
year, when his status was
reverted to that of fire driver
because of a Supreme Court
ruling -that the post should be
filled by competitive Civil
Service examination.
Previously the post was filled
by decision of the Common
Council.
Last November, the Civil
Service question was on the
ballot and residents voted by a
five to one margin to go the Civil
Service selection route.
Mr. Badrow was a native of
Wheatfield, but had resided in
Tonawanda for more than 30
years.
He was an Army veteran of
World War II, a member of First
Presbyterian Church, International
Association of Fire
Chiefs, New York* State
Association of Fire Chiefs,
Niagara Hose Company,
Uniformed Professional
Firefighters Association and the
Buffalo Carpenters Union.
Mr. Badrow also was a
Democratic committeeman, a
member of Tonawandas Post
264 of the American Legion, the
International Association of
Arson Investigators and an
honorary member of National
Hose Company.
He was president of the United
Labor Council of the
Tonawandas for the past 16
years.
In 1976, Mr. Badrow was
named outstanding fireman of
the year by the Tonawandas
Jaycees.
Recently, Mr. Badrow was
charged by the city with using
city gasoline in his private
vehicle and was to have faced a
hearing on the matter shortly.
Survivors include his wife.

Betty J. Wrege (Fiala) age 91, entered into rest on October 4, 2020, and her beloved husband of 70 years, Herman F. “Skip” Wrege, age 91, joined her on December 7, 2020. They were the loving parents of John Wrege, Linda Jaspersen, Karen Hormachea and Laura Cunningham. They were grandparents of 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  Betty was a devoted mother and wife who worked as a teachers aide in the Tonawanda School District and served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis of Assisi R. C. Church in Tonawanda. She was on the Restoration Committee of the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel where she and her husband will be put to rest. Skip was a WWII U. S. Navy veteran. He had worked early in his career as the Foreman in the metal shop for the Wurlitzer Company, later on he became owner and operator of Rege Precision Tooling Inc.  He was a life-long member of the Gratwick Hose Fire Co.  Because of the current Covid 19 restrictions the family will be holding services privately. If so desired donations may be made in their honor to Hospice Buffalo, or the VA of Western New York, Home based Primary Care.

A 1963 graduate of North Tonawanda H.S., Kathleen worked 41 years in the offices of Columbus McKinnon. Kathleen was a lifelong devout Catholic. She was a parishioner at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church before its closure in 2008 and at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church since that time. She loved to volunteer her time at church ministries and functions. She loved traveling, football and above all spending time with her family.
