    YOUNGSTOWN — Roy J. Shafer, age 85, of Youngstown, died Friday, May 31, 2013, at his home, under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice.

    Roy was born October 24, 1927 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Roy W. and Katherine (Stamler) Shafer. He was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and served in the Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1947. Roy attended Niagara University and in 1953 he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University. On May 25, 1956, he married Patricia A. (Swift) Shafer and they have resided in Youngstown for nearly 30 years. Roy was employed by Herbert F. Darling, Inc. for 37 years, retiring as Vice President of Construction and Safety. After retiring from Darling, Roy ran his own consultant business, RJS Consultants in Youngstown and was also a sales representative for Canadian Metal Rolling Mills, Ltd. of Mississauga, Ontario.

    Roy cherished and proudly led his family as head of the household. He always made sure that everyone and everything was "taken good care of." He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren often assisting with various projects or attending sporting events. He engrained the values of education and hard work to his family. Roy also valued his friendships that he made throughout his life often telling the same jokes or stories during breakfast or lunch outings with the "boys".

    He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Lewiston and Zion Lutheran Church. Roy was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Military Engineers, Deep Foundation Institute, Past Chairman of the Pile Driver Committee of the Construction Industry Employers Association of Western New York, and past Chairman of the Safety Committee of the Chapter.

    He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Scott S. Shafer of Ransomville, Starrin R. Shafer of Greenville, SC, and Steven S. (Stephanie S.) Shafer of Windsor, England; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Jonathan) Payne, Jonathan, Abigail and Julie Shafer, Joshua and Tyler Koepsell; and two great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Suzanne T. Shafer-Koepsell and two sisters, Hazel Faulkner and Dolores Dick.

    Memorial service will be held during the peak of summer at the lake; Roy's most favorite place to be, at a date and time to be announced. Memorials may be made in his honor to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094; or to Autistic Services, Inc., 4444 Bryant & Stratton Way, Williamsville, NY 14221.     Scott Stamler Shafer, of Ransomville, NY died on December 05, 2018 after a brief illness, surrounded by the love of his family and lifelong friends.
    Born on June 12, 1959 in Niagara Falls, NY Scott was the son of Patricia Shafer of Youngstown, NY. He is survived by two children, Jennifer (Jonathan) Payne and Dr. Jonathan Shafer; sister Dr. Starrin Shafer; brother Steven (Stephanie) Shafer; grandchildren Natalie and Emilee and extended family. He was predeceased by his father Roy Shafer and a sister Suzanne Koepsell.
    A graduate of North Tonawanda High School, Scott earned a degree in Applied Science, Computer Aided Design and Mechanical Engineering Technology from Niagara County Community College and began his career in the engineering and construction industries. Scott worked construction for Herbert F. Darling Inc. and Schmoyer Construction Co., engineering for Delphi Thermal and most recently as a Project Manager with Shannon Enterprises in North Tonawanda.
    An avid sportsman, Scott enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing. He loved tending his garden in the summer months, snowmobiling in the winter and supporting the Buffalo hometown teams.
    Scott loved spending time with his family including his special Aunt Jill, his mother Pat and was especially proud of the accomplishments of his daughter Jennifer and son Jonathan.
    Visitations will be held on FRIDAY (Dec 14) from 4-8 PM at the HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES INC. 3648 Ransomville Rd. Ransomville, NY 14131. Burial will take at 11:00 AM on SATURDAY in Oakland Rural Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Ransomville Vol Fire Co. or Roswell Park Alliance Foundation PO Box 631 Buffalo, NY 14240 in support of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

    Youngstown - Suzanne T. (Shafer) Koepsell, age 45, of Youngstown, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 30, 2009 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston. Suzanne was born August 19, 1963 in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, the daughter of Roy J. and Patricia A. (Swift) Shafer of Youngstown.She was a 1982 graduate of Niagara Lutheran High School in North Tonawanda as well as a graduate of the Cheryl Fell School of Business in Niagara Falls. Suzanne had worked at Fairchild Manor Nursing Home in Lewiston as a Nurse’s Aide and had also worked as a private Home Aide. Most recently, Suzanne had worked in the hospitality industry. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls. Suzanne enjoyed music, reading, animals, and gardening but most of all she loved being with her two sons and family.She is survived by her sons, Tyler R. and Joshua S. Koepsell, both of Lewiston; her parents, Roy J. and Patricia A. (Swift) Shafer of Youngstown; a sister, Starrin R. Shafer of Greenville, SC; two brothers, Scott S. Shafer of Ransomville, and Steven S. (Stephanie) Shafer of Greenville, SC; her former husband, Jeffrey Koepsell of Lewiston, and several nieces and nephews.Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth and Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Monday from 4 - 8 PM. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 3, at 11:00 AM in the funeral home, with the Dr. William Lee Nelson-Loeske officiating.
