CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES AT FAMILY HOME IN TUSCARORA ROAD
Christian F. Wittcopp Changed Spelling of Name in Order to Enlist.
Christian F. Wittcopp, 81 years old, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans of the town of Niagara, died Saturday afternoon at the family home in the Tuscarora road. Funeral services will be held from the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Edward Graubau (sic), of the Walmore church, will officiate. Interment will be in Shawnee cemetery.
At the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. Wittcopp tried to enlist on several occasions but each time was told that he was too young. He was a large boy for his age and finally decided to conceal his identity by changing the spelling of his name and his address. The name was originally spelled Wittkopp but he changed the "k" to a "c" and told the recruiting officer he came from Canada. He had retained the changed spelling of his name ever since. He enlisted in Company H. 20th, Regiment, U. S. Infantry, and soon became a corporal. He participated in many engagements and at the close of the war was given an honorable discharge. He is survived by three sons, Albert, of Cambria; Henry, of Bergholtz, and Philip, of the town of Niagara; and three daughters, Mrs. William Camann, of Niagara. Falls; Mrs. William Schultz, of North Tonawanda, and Miss Estelle Wittcopp, of the Tuscarora road, with whom he made his home.

Last Rites for C. F. Wittcopp, Soldier in Civil War, Held at Home.
SANBORN, Jan. 30-Funeral services, for Christian F. Wittcopp, 81, one of the few remaining Civil war veterans of the town of Niagara, who died Saturday at the family home in the Tuscarora road, were held from the home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Edward Graubau (sic), of the Walmore church, officiated. Interment was in Shawnee cemetery. The bearers were Raymond Schultz, Norman Pockelwaldt, Arthur Wittcopp, Erwin Pockelwaldt, Clarence Wittcopp and Edward Pockelwaldt. Mr. Wittcopp served throughout the Civil war. His loss is mourned by a wide circle of friends and relatives

The funeral of John F. Witkop, who died yesterday morning at his home on the Ward road near St. Johnsburg, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the residence and half an hour later from the St. John's church in St. Johnsburg. Rev. Walter Thiemecke will conduct the services and burial will be in the St. John's cemetery. The survivors are a wife, Wilhelmina; two sons, Charles J. Witkop of St. Johnsburg and William C. Goerss of North Tonawanda; two daughters, Mrs. Christian G. Hoffmeister of North Tonawanda and Mrs. Otto Stoelting of Cambria, 20 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Mrs. Anna Camann nee Witcop, 55, died yesterday at her home, 40 East Felton Street. Born in the Town of Niagara, she lived the greater part of her life in the LaSalle section of Niagara Falls, coming to North Tonawanda two years ago to make her home. She was a a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Cayuga Drive, and a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. Surviving are her husband William A.; two daughters. Dorothy, of North Tonawanda, and Mrs. Gerald Bruss, of Bergholtz; two sons, Lester Camann, of North Tonawanda, Raymond Schultz. of Niagara Falls; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William Schultz of North Tonawanda, and Miss Esther Witcop of the Town of Niagara, and three brothers, Albert Witcop of Lockport, Henry Witcop of Bergholtz, and Philip Witcop of the Town of Niagara. (Dec. 6, 1965) in Veterans Administration Hospital, Buffalo, where he had been a patient for one day. Harrington in North Tonawanda
city court again this morning on
a charge of public intoxication. It
was their third appearance on
this charge in six weeks.
Judge Harrington decided a
stretch in the county jail at Lock-
port might do some good, so he
gave them 60 days each. On a
similar appearance about three
weeks ago, they escaped with a
five-day sentence, each.
The Witcops were arrested Sat-
arday afternoon on Oliver street.

Locked In a cell at police headquarters
on a disorderly charge last night,
Louis Wittkopp, 21 years old, 1506 Linwood
avenue, .hanged himself with his
belt.. His body was found dangling
from the bars of his cell at 11:30 o'clock
last night by Patrolman Anson Lalone
when the officer made a round of the
cell room on the first floor to look over
the prisoners. Lalone cut. the belt
with his knife, releasing the youth, but
Wittkopp was dead.
Wittkopp had been arested at 5:30
o'clock yesterday afternoon by Patrolman
Raymond Confer. With him was
arrested his father, Albert C. Wittkopp,
52 years old, also of 1506 Llnwood avenue.
Confer said the father and son
had been fighting on the street at
Pierce avenue and Fifteenth street and
had been creating a disturbance. Resi
Residents
of the neighborhood had complained
to police.
When young Wittkopp ended his life
his father occupied the cell next to
his. The elder Wittkopp was asleep
when Lalone discovered his son's body.
Awakened by the comotion that resulted
in the discovery of. his son's
lifeless form hanging from the cell
bars, the father sensed that something
was wrong and asked police if his son
had ended his life. They magnanimously
assured him that he had not and
removed the father to a cell on the
upper floor, detaining him in headquarters
all. night as a precaution for
his own safety.
Coroner W. L. Draper said that young
Wittkopp had been dead only a short
time when discovered by Lalone. The
body was sent to the Dykstra funeral
chapel to be prepared for burial. Besides
his father, young Wittkopp is
survived by a bother, Carl, this city.

She was at one time a member of the Farm Bureau.She enjoyed embroidery and needle work and gardening. A favorite pastime was traveling. Alfred Wittkopp, 65, of Telegraph Road, died suddenly on Tuesday afternoon at his home, after a long illness. Born in the Town of Lockport on May 19, 1918, a son of John and Nettie Wittkopp, he had spent his whole life in Niagara and Orleans Counties. He worked at Agchem Medina, Wolfs Lumber Mill, Hartland. Mr. Wittkopp is survived by an aunt, Rose Handrich of Orwell, N.Y.; several cousins; a stepson, Paul Davey of Lyndonville; four grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild. WHEATFIELD - Arline F. Walck, a former secretary who was active in her church, died Thursday in Northgate Manor Health Care Facility, where she had been a patient for two years. She was 100.

Born Arline Blank in the Town of Niagara, she attended schools in the LaSalle section of Niagara Falls and in Wheatfield, and later attended Niagara Business College.

She worked as a secretary at the Nabisco plant in Niagara Falls and at Buffalo Garment Co.

Mrs. Walck was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and a Bible class. She organized the church library in 1962. She dabbled in writing Christian music and also enjoyed reading and traveling.

Her husband, Hubert Walck, died in 1990.

Surviving are a son, Lester of Sanborn; a sister, Josephine Stange of North Tonawanda; a grandson; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6168 Walmore Road. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery.

Born in North Tonawanda, he was a vice president of Marine Midland Bank and retired in 1972 as the manager of the First Trust office in the City of Tonawanda. He also had been manager of the State Trust and Payne Avenue branches of Marine Midland Bank.
He was a graduate of Rutgers University School of Banking and was active in the Tonawanda Chamber of Commerce.
Hoffmeister was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church of North Tonawanda all of his life and served as treasurer of the church. He also was active in the Boys Club and Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife, the former Alice Behm; a daughter, Susan Zawodniak of Bedford, N.H.; two sons, Paul of South Bend., Ind., and Mark of Arlington Heights, ILl.; and five grandchildren.

Cherry Hill - Doris J. DeVantier, age 84, of Cherry Hill passed away after a short illness on December 5, 2017. She was the devoted and loving wife of the late Roger DeVantier for 62 years. Doris was born in Niagara Falls, NY the first child of the late Clarence and Esther Wittkopp. Doris and Roger moved to Cherry Hill in 1957. After passionately raising four children (some required more effort than others), she decided to return to school and earned her diploma as a licensed practical nurse. She helped numerous patients in the Delaware Valley. She was a charter member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church where she was active and energetic in the life of the church until her death. Doris enjoyed knitting, sewing, ceramics, choir singing, and travel. Most of all she was devoted to her family. Roger and Doris especially cherished the annual vacations at Sea Isle City, NJ. They educated us about God's most incredible gift - our Family. Her amazingly strong character taught us lessons that are being passed down to multiple generations through her children and grandchildren. Her last few years of life were challenged by numerous physical and emotional heartaches. She faced all of them with a positive attitude, grace, and exceptional strength that are a true inspiration to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband Roger, daughter Joyce White and son Mark DeVantier. Left to cherish her memory include her children Wayne (Pam) DeVantier of Chesapeake, VA, Keith (Betty Jo) DeVantier of Cornelius, NC , daughter in law Vickie DeVantier of Richardson, TX, and son in law Don White of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Nine adoring grandchildren Drew White, Nicole White, Rachel (Joe) Rice, Audra DeVantier, Kristie Jo (Josh) Schutt, Brent (Kendra) DeVantier Jamie Lee (Ryan) Hillary , Laura DeVantier and Ross DeVantier, as well as four great-grandchildren. Joan A. Thomas, 86, of Medina, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 14, 2020 at Absolut Care in Gasport, surrounded by family. Joan was born on September 16, 1933 and was a daughter of Vernon and Alice Krisher.
She married the love of her life, John "Jack" A. Thomas, on June 18, 1971 who predeceased her on October 18, 2015.
Joan was a graduate of Lyndonville High School and Houghton College. She taught at Lyndonville Central School for 30 plus years.
Joan and Jack loved to travel around in their RV in their younger years and go on cruises with family later in life. In her free time, Joan loved to be outside working in her garden or playing her piano. She was dedicated to her church community and played organ and piano during Sunday services. After retirement, they lived in Florida during the winter months and loved to host family and friends in their Tarpon Springs home. In recent years, Joan looked forward to her Tuesday dinner dates with her granddaughter, Ashley.
Joan is survived by her six children, Dawn (Anthony) Kwiatkowski, David (Bobbi) Huntington, Mark Thomas, Judy (Bill) Wright, Jeffrey (Debbie) Thomas and Jon Thomas; her grandchildren, which include Christopher, Darren, Nicole, Ashley, Nathan, Aaron, Kristen, Suzy, Ryan, Justin, Kayla, Tammy and Jay; her siblings, Suzanne Lorenz, Carol Fulcomer and Dan (Christine) Krisher; along with many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to the love of her life, Jack, she was also predeceased by her parents, Vernon and Alice Krisher; her son, Douglas Huntington; and daughter, Jacquie Atkinson; her siblings, Vernon "Bud" Krisher, Margie Mapes and Diane Palmer.

Obituary of Charles Winters

Charles W. Winters passed away November 11, 2017 in Niagara Hospice House. Born in Lockport on July 11, 1929 he was the son of Linus and Hattie (Veomett) Winters. Charles served in the US Navy from 1946 to 1950. He worked for Local 129/22 in Niagara Falls, where he was a plumber and steam fitter for 60 years retiring in 1993. He was the manager of Brauer's Suburban League Fast Pitch, enjoyed bowling, ran the "Lockport Day's" in Florida for several years and was instrumental in the restoration of the canal tender on the big bridge with "CAPPY" at the helm. Charles was a member of the Navy/Marine Club where he served as past commodore, the VFW, American Legion, and the Elks Club. He was predeceased by his wife Bernadine (Cook) Winters in June 2003.
Charles is survived by his children Charles L. Winters and Carol (Ross) Walker; grandchildren Gwen (Wolfgang) Kleber, Troy Walker, and late Cheri Walker; great grandchildren Tyler Walker, Zachary Walker, Ryleigh Blum, and Emma Davis and beloved cat Buddy; siblings late Norman, Layton, Herbert, Nelson, Elton, Winters, Eleanor Sanford, and Doris Jones; several nieces and nephews.

LOCKPORT — Lewis John Wittcop passed away May 2, 2012, under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born January 6, 1927 in Gasport, he was the son of John William and Estelle Rose (Maynard) Wittcop. Lewis entered the US Army on April 27, 1945, and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on December 8, 1946, with the 313th Company C Engineer Combat Battalion stationed in Europe during WWII. Lewis was employed with Harrison Radiator where he was a truck driver, and retired in 1975 after 31 years. He was a member of the Hartland United Methodist Church, joining in 1962 to present; member of the Gasport American Legion Post 1253, Hartland Conservation Club and a member of ABC American Bowling Congress. Lewis enjoyed fishing, was an avid local sports fan, bowling and was a John Deere Collector.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Jean (Bedford) Wittcop of Hartland; father of Terrance Wittcop (Judy) of Hickory, NC, Norma Sturtevant (Steven) of Lockport, Elizabeth Seib of Newfane, Laura Werth (John) of Medina, Rodger Wittcop (Carol) of Lockport, Denise Caton of Gasport, Roseann Heitzenrater (Joseph), Brian Wittcop (Sarah) of Gasport, and the late Cheryl Feuersanger (Johann) of Lockport; grandfather of 27 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; very dear nephew, Christopher Wittcop of Gasport; last survivor of thirteen siblings.

WILSON, Oct. 22 - One Wilson driver was killed and
another seriously injured at 12:15- a.m. today in a headon col-.
lision in Lake St., near the Duxbury Farm. '
Gordon Frank Dold, 25, of Ide Rd., was pronounced dead on arrival at Ransomville General Hospital. Coroner F.
Eugene Ingram, Niagara Falls, said Dold suffered a fractured
neck, fractured ribs, a fractured jaw and internal injuries.
John R. Schoonmaker. 40, of 182
Franklin St.. was admitted to Ransomville
Hospital with fractured
ribs, multiple lacerations on the
face and legs, a fractured left ankle
and possible fractured spine.
50-fool Skid Marks
Mr. Schoonmaker told sheriffs
deputies he was traveling north in
Lake St. and saw the Dold car
coming south but could not avoid
being hit. Deputies said marks on
the highway show the Schoonmaker
car skidded about 50 feet along the
east side of the highway with the
right wheel at the edge of the highway
and partly on the shoulder.
There were no skid marks from
the other car. Both cars were demolished.
The two men were taken to the
hospital in the Wilson Fire Department
ambulance by Kenneth Tracey
and Donald Flagler of Wilson.
The accident was investigated by
Set. Robert Andrews and Deputies
Ciyde Doty. William Munch and
Stanley Dotmki of the sheriffs department.
A veteran of the Korean War,
Mr. Dold was born April 24. 1930.
in the Town of Royalton. son of
Frank and Clara Wittcopp Dold. He
was graduated from Lockport High
School.
World War II Vet
Mr. Dold was employed about
three months at Harrison Radiator
Division of General Motors Corp
before entering the armed forces in
1950 and returned to work there
when he was discharged from mili-
tary service in 1953.
Mr. Dold served in the Air Force
in Korea as an airman second class.
He was a member of the First Pres-
byterian Church, Lockport.
In addition to his parents, he is
survived by seven sisters, Esther,
Elizabeth, Nancy, Arlene, Suzanne,
Alice and Sandra, all of Wilson, and
four brothers, Victor, Franklin and
Frederick of Wilson and Charles

LOCKPORT — Franklin H. Dold passed away unexpectedly February 1, 2014. Born January 30, 1935 in Lockport, he was the son of the late Victor Franklin and Clara May (Wittcop) Dold. Franklin was a steel worker at Simonds Saw and Steel after its closure. He finished his working career at Frontier Stone, now LaFarge. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and anything to do with the outdoors. He also enjoyed family drives and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Franklin was the husband of the late Beverly Harding Dold. She passed away December 20, 1998. He was the father of Linda (Ron) Sementelli of Lockport, Clara LaRock of Lockport, Marilyn Meyer of Olcott, Gene (Sonya) Dold, Myra (Russ) Bratt, both of Pendleton, Joleen (Michael) Sommers of North Tonawanda, and the late Deborah, William and Charles Dold; grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of three. Franklin was also the brother of Nancy (the late David) Arkland, Jane (the late John) Demmin, Arlene Dold, Sandra (the late Rodney) Toenniessen, Susan Wheeler, Alice (Mark) Pfonner, Fred (Jessie) Dold, and the late Victor Dold, Esther Arkland and Gordon Dold; brother-in-law of Judy Dold and Allan Barnes. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
