    Hewett, Dr. William "Bill"

    - February 2, 2024

    departed this world shortly after celebrating his 88th birthday with family and friends. Born in Buffalo, NY, Bill was the eldest of 6 children to Dr. Joseph and Ruth (Yensan) Hewett. A graduate of Canisius College, he obtained his MD from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine in 1961. Shortly after, he enlisted in the US Army. Upon retiring from the Army as Major, Bill settled in West Hartford, CT and joined a successful obstetrics & gynecology practice at Hartford Hospital. He later specialized in Gynecologic Oncology and served as President of Mid-Atlantic Gynecologic Oncology Society and President for both the New England and Connecticut American Cancer Societies. After practicing medicine for nearly 30 years, Bill enjoyed a 2nd career as a pilot and flight instructor out of Brainard Airfield in Hartford, CT. He is survived by his devoted wife and life partner, Marian (Forti) Hewett (a native of North Evans, NY) and his 8 children and 17 grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and enduring memories.     GITZEN - Mary F., Ph.D. (Hewett Roblin) Age 66, of West Lafayette, IN, died Friday evening, June 22, 2012, while she and her husband were returning home to West Lafayette from out of state. She was born October 14, 1945 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Joseph and Ruth Yensan Hewett. Mary did her undergraduate work at D'Youville College, a Masters at SUNY Buffalo and taught English in Buffalo high schools for 22 years. In 1993 Mary came to Purdue University as a Liberal Arts graduate student, earning her Ph.D. Afterwards, Dr. Gitzen taught at Purdue in the Oral English Proficiency Program, until recently. Her marriage was to James F. "Jim" Gitzen on March 4, 2000 in West Lafayette and he survives. She and her husband have been very active with the ComeBye Border Collie Rescue group, fostering and finding homes for many Border Collies. Surviving with her husband Jim are three brothers, William Hewett (Marian) of West Hartford, CT, James Hewett (Kathy) of Sarasota, FL, and Donald Hewett of Houston, TX; one sister, Elizabeth Hewett of Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother David. Private family services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary's name to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, www.roswellpark.org, ComeBye Border Collie Rescue, www.comebyebcrescue.org, or your preferred animal rescue group.
