    I am a descendant of Josiah Staley, son of Jonas Staley who was the son of Christian Staley. I thought you would enjoy knowing a bit more about Josiah or Joseph (as he was called).

    He was born October 1834 Erie County Buffalo NY. He married Henriette "Harriet" Pider on Jan 3, 1860, in Lyndon, Wisc. He died on April 16, 1912 age 78 in Waldo, Wisc. He is buried in the Onion River Cemetery there.

    Henriette Pider was born Dec 25, 1836 in Hesse-Darmstadt Germany- Gross Umstadt. She died on Jan 4th 1927 age 91 years in Waldo, Wisc. Her parents were Johann "John" Pider and Wilhelmina. The family immigrated in 1843.

    Their children were:

    Lucy C. Staley b. July 28, 1862 Onion River, Wisc.- d. sept 20, 1937-married Robert Henry Koehler
    Peter H. Staely b. Kam 1861 Plymouth, Wisc- died bef. 1935 married Anna Minch
    George W. Staley b. Oct 16, 1866, Onion River/Lyndon Wisc.-died 1935, married Otilia Mey
    Emma A. Staley b. Aug 2, 1870 Onion River, Wisc-died May 6 1935
    Hattie "Harriett" Staey b. 1868 d. 1902

    Josiah owned a Blacksmith Shop in Onion River, Wisc. and later served in the Civil War. Josiah's pension was applied for on April 19, 1879 #280.960. On 1879 the family moved to Plymouth,Wisc. then later to a farm near Elkhart Lake ( on the Peiter/Pider homestead). Then finally on to Waldo. THey were Methodist.

    Josiah Staley served in the Union -enlisted out of Ohio Aug 22, 1862.Infantry- Company E, 36th Reg. Rank of Private, age 29. He mustered out 1864 Feb 18.

    He can be found in census reports: 1860,(Lyndon) Sheboygan Wisc., same for 1870 (Plymouth ) 1880 and 1900, Lyndon twp.

    Mrs. John Laur of No. 807 Willow avenue died at 10 o'clock last night in a Buffalo hospital. She was 53 years old. Mrs. Laur was the daughter of the late Jacob F. Streicher and had been a resident of this city for many years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran church and of tho Ladies' Aid and Woman's Missionary societies of tho church.     Courier-Express Niagara Falls Bureau Niagara Falls, Feb. 23—Next time you lift your glass to sing a toast to the Schnitzelbank, let it be to one of the "species" still doing duty on the Lockport Road farm of Supervisor Andrew R. Laur of the Town of Niagara. For everyone in the room with you will be able to join in a shouted and emphatic "Ja, das ist eine Schnit zelbank," for this sturdy old shaving stool has done service for 120 years. Abraham Wilmer, grandfather of Mrs. Lauer, constructed this vise in 1815 after arriving in the Lockport Road area. He followed the tradi tional pattern of thc:c built by car penters in Germany since about tne seventeenth century. It has survived the advent of the lathe, so far as those who have followed Abe Wil mer are concerned. Managed by a foot pedp'., the up per arm grips firmly the wood on which the workman is whittling with a draw-knife. From the blocks that the Witmer-Laur schitzelbank has clung onto have come axe handles, chair rungs, table legs, wagon tongues, handles for shovels and many other articles. All these pro ducts defy comparison with ma chine-made counterparts. Supervisor Laur used it in mak ing a gavel which he presented to County Judge William A. Gold re cently. That schnitzelbanking shall not become a lost art in the Laur house hold, the jovial supervisor is dilli gently training his nephew, John Laur, in the art, and John, It may be said to his credit, responds with a foot and arm action that would make any schnitzelbank content.
