    TONAWANDA — Elmer P. Degenhart, age 83, of Tonawanda, died unexpectedly, Monday, January 23, 2012 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Born in Tonawanda, he was the son of the late William and Catherine (nee Egan) Degenhart and had been a lifelong resident of Tonawanda. A Navy Veteran of WWII, Mr. Degenhart was employed at National Grinding Wheel in North Tonawanda before retiring and had been an avid woodworker and fisherman. He was the brother of the late Ellen Wolf and James Degenhart.

    He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bernice (nee Whipple) Degenhart; his son, Edward (Laura) Degenhart; two grandchildren, Brian Degenhart and Bethany (Scott) Baum; and two sisters, Margaret Batka and Katherine Whipple; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

    There is no visitation. Friends are invited to attend funeral services with military honors at 1 PM on Friday at the Holy Family Mausoleum Chapel at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on Elmwood Avenue in the Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to Roswell Park Cancer Institute are preferred by the family. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the HAMP FUNERAL HOME, INC.,Tonawanda.

    Margaret (nee Degenhart) Batka, age 85, of Tonawanda, died Friday, October 14, at DeGraff Skilled Nursing Facility in North Tonawanda. Born in Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (nee Eagan) Degenhart. Mrs. Batka was a lifelong member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and was employed by the KenTon School District before retiring. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

    She was the wife of the late Stanley Batka, who died December 26, 1998; mother of David (Kim) Batka of Tonawanda; grandmother of Robert (Kathy) Batka of Buffalo; and sister of the late Elmer Degenhart, Ellen Wolf, Katherine Whipple, and James Degenhart. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

    There is no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon on Saturday, October 29, at St. Francis Chapel, 71 Adam Street, Tonawanda; the Rev. Joseph Badding officiating. Friends invited. Inurnment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, memorials to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 73 Adam Street, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by her family.

    Margaret married BATKA, Stanley on 19 Aug 1950 in North Tonawanda, Niagara County, NY. Stanley (son of BATKA, Karl and SZCZEPANIAK, Mary) was born on 27 May 1925 in New York; died on 26 Dec 1998 in Sanborn, Niagara County, NY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Katherine 'Kay' Whipple (nee Degenhart), a life-time resident of the Tonawandas, passed quietly in her sleep at home on January 24, 2016.

    Beloved wife of the late LeRoy 'Bud' Sr. Loving and nurturing mother to LeRoy Jr. 'Bud' (Jen), James Patrick (Marge), Patricia Ann (Illig), Ronald James (Marianne). Loving sister to Elmer, James, Marge (Batka), Ellen (Wolf).Grandmother of eight; great-grandmother to 14 and great-great- grandmother to three.

    A celebration of Katherine's life will be held in the way of a Catholic Service on Saturday, January 30th at Noon, St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, 71 Adams St., Tonawanda, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Katherine's name to Niagara Hospice.
