Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 4/10/1930

Edward Barrett, 76 years old, for
many years a locktender on the
canal here, died at 5:25 o'clock last
night at his home, 96 Caledonia
street, after a long illness. He had
been confined to his home since he
suffered a stroke six years ago.
Mr. Barrett was born here and
was a young man when he secured
his first appointment as locktender.
He held the job more than forty
years and when forced to retire be-
cause of ill health was one of the
oldest canal employees in the state
in point of service. He was a life-
long member of St. Patrick's church.
Surviving is one son and four
daughters, Maria Barrett, Mrs.
Claude Murphy, Mrs. James Duffy
and Edward Barrett of this city an d
Mrs. William Donahue of Niagara
Falls. Funeral arrangements have
not been competed.

Complications resulting from a
fractured hip suffered seven weeks
ago ln a fall at her home resulted
to the death of Mrs. Maria Barrett
Haley, 81. of 96 Caledonia St., Monday
afternoon at Lockport City Hospital
Mrs. Haley was a lifelong resident
of Lockport She was educated
to St. Patricks Parochial School
and was a member of St. Patrick's
Church.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs.
William Donahue, Niagara Palls;
Mrs. Claude Murphy and Mrs.
James P. Duffy of Lockport.
Services will be held Thursday at
9:30 at the home and at 10 o'clock
at St. Patrick's Church. Burial will
be to St. Patricks Cemetery.

The first woman elected to the
Common Council of Lockport,
Mrs. Alice M. Duffy, 67, of 96 Caledonia
St., died unexpectedly Sunday
evening (Oct. 22, 1961) at
Mount View Hospital where she
had been taken Thursday after
suffering a heart attack.
Born in Lockport, Sept. 24, 1894,
she was the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Barrett.
Mrs. Duffy was the widow of
the-"Duke of Lockport." James
Duffy, former Lockport welterweight
boxer who put the community
on the map with his boxing
prowess in the early 1900's.
When her husband entered the
Veteran's Administration Hospital
in 1958, Mrs. Duffy turned to politics
and was the first woman
elected alderman of the First
Ward, serving two terms. In
1958 and 1959, she was elected to
the County Board of Supervisors
and served on four of its committees,
the judicial, supervisory,
county clerk and equalization.
Mr. and Mrs. Duffy celebrated
their golden wedding anniversary
in 1958 at the hospital where Mr
Duffy died in 1960 after having
been a patient there for nine
years.
Mrs. Duffy had been a mem
ber of the Lockport Business and
Professional Women's Club, Worn
en's Republican Club, the Lock
City Committee, St. Patrick's
Church and the Altar and Rosary
Society and the Ladies of
Charity of that church.
Mrs.' Duffy is survived by a
sister, Mrs. Ceilia Murphy of
Lockport, and several nieces and
nephews.
Friends may call after 7 this
evening at the Haenle Funeral
Home, 230 Jackson St. where funeral
services will be held at
8:30 Thursday morning. A requiem
mass will follow at 9 at St
Patrick's Church.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's
Cemetery.

Nancy S. Albanese, 89 of Medina entered into rest on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Medina Memorial Hospital’s Skilled Nursing Facility.
Born June 9, 1930 in Lockport, she was a daughter of the late Louis P. and Mary (Healy) Shanley. Mrs. Albanese graduated from Desales Catholic School in 1948 and went on to graduate from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Licensed Practical Nursing. She married her husband Dominic Albanese on September 24, 1955 and they made their home in Medina. Mrs. Albanese worked for many years for Dr. Angelo Leone in Medina until his retirement, after which she went back to college and earned a Registered Nursing degree through GCC.  An institution in the Medina community, Mrs. Albanese was employed as a Registered Nurse at Medina Memorial Hospital for over 40 years. Mrs. Albanese loved her profession to say the least and was known for her kind and caring demeanor and was a mentor to many. She was a longtime parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, St. Mary’s Church and was a member of the Rosary Society and Court Santa Maria #295, Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Mrs. Albanese served on the board of directors at Hospice of Orleans County and as a member of the Medina Memorial Hospital Foundation Board. She was a member of Twigs and an active member of  the Beta Sigma Phi International Society. She was a longtime member of the Tuesday Club, enjoyed playing bridge, knitting and baking.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dominic Albanese in 1986 and her sister, Mary Lou (late Carl) Blackly.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary T. (Michael) Thomas of Hollis, NH; her two grandchildren, Matthew Thomas of San Diego, CA and Melissa Thomas of Boston, MA; siblings, Carolyn (late Mauro) Garofalo, David (late Wilma) Shanley, Patricia (John) Joensen, Jane (Raymond) Coakley and Marjorie (John) Heck; also many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Wednesday, Aug 28th from 4-7 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Richard Csizmar on Thursday, Aug. 29th at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 211 Eagle St., Medina. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

It is with sadness that the family of Rosemary Woodworth (nee Britt) announces her passing on Friday, April 28, 2023 at the age of 93. Born April 04,1930 in Lockport, she was the wife of the late Clare Woodworth, and mother to Michael, Rose Ann, Daniel, and Shannon. Rosemary will also be affectionally remembered by her grandchildren, Jessica, Heather, Cooper, Hamilton and Pierce, in addition to her great-grandchildren, Loretta, Olive, and Levon. Her personal life achievements include cash crop and sheep farming, a proud retiree of the Lockport’s Harrison Radiator, and a supersonic Concorde traveler. Most of all however, Rosemary will be remembered as a gracious lady by all that met her. Her Catholic faith was remarkable, which included her influential involvement in the St. John’s Alter & Rosary Society, in addition to the local Hibernian Society.
No prior visitation.  Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Tuesday, May 2nd at 10 AM in St. John the Baptist RC Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport.  Private burial will be in Hartland Central Cemetery.  Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to her favorite charities of either Shriners Hospital, Make A Wish, or St. Jude Hospital.  Visit pruddenandkandt.com.

Obituary of Jean D. Roberts
Jean D. Roberts passed away, peacefully, on Friday January 17th, 2020. Jean was born in Lockport NY on August 7th, 1929; the daughter of the late William and Hazel Barrett. She was a lifelong resident of Lockport.Jean worked many years at the local women’s department store L.L. Berger and anyone that knew her recognized her effortless flare for fashion. She dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved dearly. The “neighborhood mom” always welcomed everyone with open arms. She spent much time perfecting her beautiful flower gardens, bird watching on her back patio, reading, caring for her animals and always cheering on the Buffalo Bills. Jean is the mother of Jerry D. Roberts, Jeffery D. Roberts, Jill D. Roberts, Jamey D. (Teri) Roberts, Jason D. (Cheryl DiMatteo) Roberts; grandmother of Jenny R. Powers, Jeffery D. Roberts, Jamey D. Roberts, Jerrod (Catherine) Roberts, Janelle D. (Kevin ) Achtyl, Jace D. Roberts, Livia D. Roberts and Barrett D. Roberts; and 12 great grandchildren. Jean is the sister of Hugh (Shelby) Barrett, the late Sharon (Bill) Glenn and the late Jimmy Barrett. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by her family and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family.
