    He was a graduate of Lafayette
    High School and the University of
    Michigan. In the infantry for 1-1/2
    years, he became a first lieutenant
    and then transferred to the Air
    Corps, receiving his pilot's wings
    at Columbus, (O.) Army Air Field.
    He completed about 17 missions
    over Europe and held the Air
    Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster.
