    Harold "Smitty" Schmidt, 66, who was an engineer with Conrail from 1964 to 1995, died Thursday (Oct. 14, 1999) in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, after a brief illness. Schmidt, also known as "Hans," was born in Wheatfield and was a graduate of Trott Vocational High School, Niagara Falls. He was a softball coach with the Cub Scouts and a catcher for the St. James Lutheran Church team in his younger days. A member of the Operating Engineers union, he worked on the construction of Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston; the Grand Island Bridges; and the Niagara Power Project, Lewiston. In addition, he was a co-owner of the former Bergholz Garage. A lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, he held various positions, including representative of the finance committee and an elder. He also was a charter member of the Wheatfield Business Association. Schmidt enjoyed fishing, bowling and euchre. A lifelong resident of Wheatfield, he also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. His first wife, Jeanette Blaise Schmidt, died in 1975. Survivors include his second wife, the former D. Jean VanNorman; three sons, Lawrence of Fayetteville, Ga., Charles and Dennis; a daughter, Katherine Harrison of Aurora, Colo.; a stepson, Scott Nestler of Los Angeles; a stepdaughter, Lori Nestler of Amherst; two sisters, Hilda Jensen of North Tonawanda and Lavina Moll; and 10 grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. James Lutheran Church, Niagara Road and Rohr Street. Burial will be in Acacia Park, Pendleton.

    Charles Kenneth Schmidt, 67, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, May 23, 2022. Known to many as Charlie, Chuck, Crackers or Schmitty. He will be remembered for his smile and jokes. Charlie was a life-long member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Bergholz, where he served as Vice-President, Treasurer, Choir Director, and Sunday School teacher. Charlie was the former co-owner and operator of Bergholz Garage, and former owner of Kroening's Garage, in Sanborn. He was also a member of the Bergholz Fire Company, where he was a former chief, and a former EMT with Tri-Community Ambulance Service, Inc. Charlie was the son of the late Harold and Jeanette M. Schmidt. Step-son of Jean Schmidt. Sweetie to his wife of 42 years, Laurie (nee Sprenger); Dad to his two children, Wayne (Molly) and Jeanette; Grampa to his two grandchildren, Maxx and Layla; brother to his three siblings, Dennis (Laurie), Larry (Lori), and Kathy (Leighton) Harrison, and step-brother to Lori (Brian) Burgin and Scott Nestler. Brother-in-law to Cindy (John) Kosek; Uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 28th. from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Randy Kaminska, on Sunday, May 29th. at 12:00 p.m. at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2437 Niagara Road, in Wheatfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, Bergholz Fire Company, or Tri-Community Ambulance Service, Inc.
