Niagara Gazette - 10/24/1928

PEKIN, Oct. 24 - A double funeral
that of Mrs. Fredericka Witkop and
that of Mrs. Augusta Bruce, was held
at the St. Andrew's Evangelical Luth-
eran Church of Pekin, yesterday af-
ternoon. Rev. Charles a. Schmidt of-
ficiated. The services were held for
Mrs. Bruce at 2 o'clock from the home
of her son, Bertram Bruce and at 2:30
o'clock for Mrs. Witkop from the home
of her son, Augustus Witkop. The ser-
vices at the church were conducted
jointly at 3 o'clock.
Friends and relatives had gathered
in great numbers to pay the last re-
spects to the deceased. Floral offer-
ings were many and beautiful.
Mrs. Witkop was ill only three weeks
and succumbed to heart disease and
old age. She was 80 years of age.
She is survived by her husband, three
sons and a daughter.
Mrs. Bruce died Sunday afternoon
after a lingering illness. She was 76
years old. She is survived by two sons
and two daughters.
Mrs. Witkop and Mrs. Bruce were
sisters-in-law and died within 20 hours
of each other.
Interment was in the Lutheran
cemetery of Pekin.

Mrs. Emma Strassburg, 81, died this morning in her home, 63 Stenzil St., after a long illness. Mrs. Strassburg was a lifelong resident of the Tonawandas. She was the mother of Edward, Albert and August Strassburg, Mrs. Arthur Ostwald and Mrs. Edward Berndt, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. The Rev. Paul E. Fretthold will officiate and burial will be in the Elmlawn Cemetery.

William J. Witkop

William J. Witkop, 75, died suddenly in his home, 27 Stenzel St., after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Witkop, a native of Tonawanda, had lived in North Tonawanda 40 years. Survivors include his widow, Julia, nee Heuer; two daughters, Mrs. Bernhardt Moll and Mrs. Albert Jendrian; two sons, Frederick and William J. Jr.; 10 grandchildren, all of North Tonawanda; two brothers, Albert of Tonawanda, August of Pekin, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Strassburg, North Tonawanda. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Fretthold Funeral Home, 1241 Oliver St., and at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Marks’s Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Fretthold will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery.

! NORTH TONAWANDA. Dec. 15. - George W. A. Strassburg, 53. a life long resident here, died today at his home, 63 Stenzil street. Mr. Strassburg was a son of the late August P. Strassburg. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Emma Strassburg; three brothers, Edward, Albert and August, and two sisters. Mrs. Arthur Ostwald and Mrs. Edward Berndt. all of the Tonawandas. August F. "Sonny" Strassburg Jr., 81, who worked as a millwright with DuPont Co. in Niagara Falls for more than 20 years, died Wednesday (May 3, 2000) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, following a three-month illness. He was born in North Tonawanda and lived on Stenzel Avenue. He attended the former Gratwick Grammar School there as well. Strassburg worked for several years in production at the former Buffalo Bolt County, North Tonawanda, and as an inspector at the former Bell Aircraft here. A veteran of World War II, he entered the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942 and served as a machinist with the 893rd Air Engineer Squadron in the European Theater until honorably discharged in 1946. Strassburg then worked as a millwright at DuPont, retiring in the mid-1970s. He was a lifelong member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Tonawanda, and was an airplane and air show enthusiast. His wife, the former Violet R. Mellenthine, died in 1978. Survivors include two sons, Terry A. of North Tonawanda and Gary D. of Niagara Falls; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday in Lane Funeral Home, 8622 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls. Burial will be in St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery, North Tonawanda.

Road, died Thursday (Sept. 8, 1966) in the office of
Dr. John Argue after suffering an apparent heart
attack.
Wilson Fire Co. No. 1 responded
to a call from the
office and attempted resuscitation
for about 20 minutes
but without success.
Mr. Witkop was an employe
of Bell Aerosystems'
Wheatfield plant.
He was born July 17, 1911,
in Niagara Falls, the son
of Albert H. and Anna Grefrath
Witkop. He married
the former Myrtha Schmidt
in 1937. They made their
home at the E. Lake Road
since 1946.
Mr. Witkop was a member
of St. Peter's Lutheran
Church, North Ridge, and
was serving as an elder at the
time of his death. He was a
member of the board of directors
of Camp Pioneer at
Angola, a member of the
Wilson Lions Club and of the
Eldridge Bicycle Club, Tonawanda.
In addition to his widow,
survivors include two daugh-
ters, Judith Witkop, at home,
and Mrs. Brenda Fouts, Freeville,
N.Y.; three sons, William
A. Witkop, Scranton,
Pa., Michael E. Witkop,
Craig Air Force Base, Selma,
Ala., and Bruce M. Witkop, at

Donna J. (nee Berndt) Behrns, age 84, of the Town of Wheatfield, April 13, 2013 in Wedgewood Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. Donna had worked as a Registered Nurse at DeGraff Memorial Hospital and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.
She was the wife of the late Arthur C. Behrns. Beloved mother of Kim (Ann) Behrns of South Carolina, Karen (Hamid) Navaie of Elmira, Kelly (Jim) McGarvey of Grand Island, Kristy (Michael) Lasher and Kurt Behrns, both of North Tonawanda. Grandmother of fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
No prior visitation. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

Force 1st Lt. Michael E. Witkop,
25, of 629 Lake St., who
died on Oct. 25 at Cam Ranh
Bay Air Field,"Vietnam.
The Defense Department notified
his mother, Mrs. Erwin
Witkop, of her son's death. He
died of a fractured skull when
the ejection scat of his F-4
Phantom Jet malfunctioned
during takeoff .
Born May 18, 1943, LL Witkop
was the son of Myrtha
and Ernest Witkop. His father
died in 1966.
In 1966, the lieutenant graduated
from Wilson Central
School. He attended Concordia
Junior College in Bronxville,
and received his bachelor of
arts degree in liberal arts from
Valpariso University in 1965.
He entered the Air Force in
January, 1966, and attended
Officers' Training School at
Lackland Air Force Base.
Texas. He was commissioned
in May of 1967 and was recently
awarded a medal for
flying more than 20 missions
over North Vietnam where he
was stationed since May.
He is survived by two sisters,
Miss Judith Witkop of
West Seneca and Mrs. Brcnda
Fouts of Frecville, N.Y., and
two brothers, William A. Witkop
of Mountainlop, Pa., and
Bruce Witkop, living at home.
Also surviving are his grandmother,
Mrs. Hedwig Schmidt
of Sheboygan, Wis. and a
grandfather, William Schmidt
of Madera, Pa. Three nephews
and nieces also survive.
Friends may call at the
Hamilton and Clark Funeral
Chapel beginning today.
Private services will be held
at 2 p.m. at the chapel. Burial
will be in St. Matthew Cemetery,
North Tonawanda.
