Notes:

Ananias "Nias" Bryant was a prominent farmer in the Lower English Creek Community at the turn of the century (end of 19th, beginning of 20th). His farm, which straddled the creek, was part of a larger tract purchased in the early 1800s by his grandfather, Tarlton Bryant, who came to Cocke County from South Carolina soon after the turn of that previous century. Bryant-Sisk Cemetery, where Ananias and many members of his family and descendants are buried, was originally part of that property.

In 1867 Nias married Sarah Sisk, a granddaughter of Revolutionary War veteran Bartlett Sisk. Nias and Sarah were parents of a dozen children (7 buried near them in Bryant-Sisk). Three of their sons (Add, Judd and Lee) moved to Missouri, where they raised families.

"Ananias" is a biblical name, with 3 characters in the Bible named Ananias, including a disciple of Jesus Christ. The initial "S." was for "Sodie" (Sodi), an Old Testament name. Nias considered himself a follower of Christ. (See cutline under the PB hymnal photo to the right). Nias was an active Primitive Baptist at the time his denomination was beginning to consider less rigid interpretations of the Scriptures. His uncle Brummit Bryant had been a Primitive Baptist minister. Two of Nias's sons, Joe and Lee, became Primitive Baptist ministers. His grandson Dan Clevenger (son of Lucinda) became a founder of a spin-off congregation of the Big Pigeon Primitive Baptist Church.

Nias died at age 66 in 1916. Listed on his death certificate as undertaker was James Breeden, a son-in-law (husband of Cordelia). After Nias's death, James and Cordelia Breeden became owners his farm.

Nias had 7 siblings. His brothers were Aaron, Judd and Thomas. His sisters were Martha (died as a teenager), Emma (Mrs. Sam McNabb of Ark.), Julia (Mrs. Clinton Holloway) and Mary (Mrs. J.A. Clevenger).

BRYANT-SISK CEMETERY: In the late 1800s there were two Bryant cemeteries in the English Creek Community, both on Tarlton Bryant properties (about a mile apart). Tarlton had owned an Upper English Creek farm, his homesite left to son Brummit, and a Lower English Creek farm, left to son Hardy. The "Old Bryant Cemetery," the Tarlton Bryant Family Cemetery, was on the upper tract; the "New Bryant Cemetery" was created on the lower tract. The first burials in the new cemetery may have been a few slaves from the area. Sisk family burials may have preceded Bryants. These earliest graves were marked with fieldstones. The first chiseled inscription on a fieldstone was in 1878. The first incised lettering on a cut stone was in 1888. There is an engraved stone for Revolutionary War veteran Bartlett Sisk, who died in 1840, but his stone was placed there decades later, after his body was exhumed from the old Big Pigeon Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery and reburied in Bryant-Sisk. Hardy's sons Aaron and Ananias are buried there. A third son, Judd, is buried across the road in the Click-Hannon Cemetery. A third and more recent Bryant cemetery is the Will Tarlton Bryant Family Cemetery, also on the Upper English Creek tract.

Funeral services for the late Judge A. Bryant, who died suddenly at the family home about 10 miles southwest of town Tuesday of last week, were held from Little Union church Saturday.

Last week's Bee told of the finding of Mr. Bryant's body lying beside a horse in the barn on his farm. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

The following obiturary was read at the funeral:
Judge Andrew Bryant, son of Annanias and Sarah Sisk Bryant was born in Cocke County, Tenn. on December 20th, 1869, and departed this life October 1st, 1940, making his stay on earth 70 years, nine months and eleven days.

He came to Missouri in an early day and was united in marriage to Esther C. Clevenger in 1898. To this union 13 children - L. B. Bryant, Holliday, Texas; J. L. Bryant, Mooresville, Mo.; Roy Bryant, Cowgill; Lee Bryant, Bakersfield, California, Mrs. Ethel Reigel, Kansas City, Mo.; Allen Bryant, Cowgill; Mrs. Opal Vanbelcher, Kansas City, Mo.; Lloyd Bryant, Braymer; Mrs. Hazel McBee, Braymer; Mrs. Mabel Ellis, Kansas Ciaty, Kansas; Mrs. Faye Falconer, Kansas City, Mo.; and Lawrence Bryant of the home. A daughter, Fern, preceded him in death. He is also survived by 30 grand-childfren and three brothers, A. H. Bryant, Cowgill; L. L. Bryant, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and Taylor Bryant, New Port, Tenn., besides a host of other relatives and friends.

He united with the Primitive Baptist church in 1896, and was a faithful member until the end.

Lucinda Bryant and Isaac Clevenger were my maternal great-grandparents. Lucinda was also my paternal great-aunt. Her parents were Ananias Bryant and Sarah Sisk, my paternal great-grandparents.

Lucinda and Isaac raised a family of 5 in the Lower English Creek Community, including my grandfather, Dan Clevenger. Lucinda and Isaac died before I was born, but my mother, Mary (Clevenger) Bryant, shared fond memories of both. She remembered how Isaac suffered with crippling arthritis during his final year. She remembered how Lucinda adored and pampered her grandchildren.

Three of Lucinda's brothers, Addison, Judd and Lee, moved to Missouri. Her other brothers were Daniel, Taylor, Tom, Joe and Elbert. Her sisters were Julia (Mrs. Luther Acton) and Cordelia (Mrs. Jim Breeden).

Thomas Nelson "Tom" Bryant was a son of Ananias Bryant and Sarah Sisk of the English Creek Community, Cocke County, Tenn. He was a great-grandson of Tarlton Bryant, the first Bryant to settle in Cocke County (coming from South Carolina around 1805).

In 1904, Tom married Dollie Allen, daughter of James Allen and Matilda Finchum. Tom and Dollie lived at the Bryant home place on English Creek, which was owned at that time by James Breeden and his wife Cordelia, Tom's sister.

Tom died of pneumonia in 1926, leaving 8 children ages 2-19. Dollie died 5 years later.

Three of Tom's brothers, Addison, Judd and Lee, moved to Missouri. His other brothers were Daniel, Taylor, Joe and Elbert. His sisters were Lucinda (Mrs. Isaac Clevenger), Julia (Mrs. Luther Acton) and Cordelia (Mrs. Jim Breeden).

D. Ray Bryant was born July 4, 1898, the son of Judd A. and Esther C. Bryant, and passed away at his farm November 22, 1976. He was the third of thirteen children. He was united in marriage April 30, 1924 to Ruby J. Daniel of Braymer, Mo. To this union were born two sons and two daughters. He lived his entire life in the Braymer-Cowgill vicinity and worked as a minister in the Church of Christ. He was a school teacher for 23 year and a farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby, of the home, all his children, Gerald R., and Loren D. Bryant of Cowgill, and Mrs. Grace Rudd of Indepenence, MO., and Mrs. Marcia Christian of Nashville, Tenn.; four brothers, Allen, of Braymer, Loyd of Cowgill, Lawrence of Independence, and Lee of Holtville, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Hazel McBee of Braymer, Mrs. Opal Cheezem, Mrs. Faye Davis and Mrs. Mabel Ellis, all of Kansas City, and eight grandchildren.

CONCORDIA - The funeral for Arley A. Bryant, 71, Concordia, local educator and a founder of Cloud County Community College, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Concordia Baptist Church, the Rev. Alden Dick officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Bryant died unexpectedly Friday Afternoon in Belleville. He was born Oct. 30, 1910, at Braymer Mo., and moved to Concordia in 1947. He joined the teaching staff of the Concordia Junior-Senior High School and was president of the college he helped found. He retired in 1976. At the time of his death he, Mr. Bryant was serving on the board of directors for the restoration of Concordia's Brown Grand Opera House and was also chairman of the board of directors of St. Joseph's Hospital here. In 1968, he received the Master Teacher Award. Mr. Bryant was a member of the Baptist Church, past president of the Concordia Rotary Club and past president of the Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are his wife, Martha, of the home; three sons, William, Concordia; Gregory, Manhattan, and Bradley, Lawrence; two daughters; Mrs. Arle Ann Lamberd, Topeka, and Mrs. Marsha Jo Brown, Manhattan; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Barber, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and seven grandchildren.

Sarah Addie Bryant Champion

Funeral for Sarah Addie Bryant Champion, 85, of Decatur will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Cagle and the Rev. Buddy Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Champion died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at her home. She was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Newport, Tenn., to Joseph Bryant and Laura Kyker Bryant. She was a Baptist and a Sunday School teacher. She was also a volunteer at a children's clinic.

Survivors include her husband, Millard Champion; one daughter, Mary Knox of Decatur; one stepson, Billy Joe Champion of Decatur; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley or Save a Life.

Wanda Lea Archer, 77, of Nampa, passed away Sunday Jan. 9, 2005, at a local care center of natural causes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, with Wayne Schuler officiating. Burial will follow at the Middleton Cemetery. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.

Wanda was born May 25, 1927, at Burkburnett, Texas, to John Lewis and Beulah Belle Bryant. At the age of 9 she moved with her family to Missouri where she attended school, graduating valedictorian. She married Milton Lee Archer Sept.1, 1946, and moved to Nampa, where they have resided for 58 years.

She was active in her church, being camp cook for over 20 years, helping with youth groups and missionary work. Wanda and Lee had been longtime members of the Caldwell First Baptist Church, and recently the Middleton First Baptist Church. She had a love for quilts, spending many hours quilting with her friend Erma and other friends in the Syringa Quilting Club.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Lee; daughters, Cathy Archer, Anita (Vic) Sims, and Lois (Darel) Holcomb; her grandchildren, Spencer (Diana), Patresha, Mykel, Matthew, Adriene, Kim (Scott), and Hailey; her great-grandchildren, Keisha, Andy, Torie, Mackenzie, Rebekah, Benjamin; a brother, Royce (Janette) Bryant; two sisters-in-laws, Helen Bryant and Mildred Bryant; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Beryl and Arvel.

The family would like to thank the staff at Trinty Health & Rehab of Holly, especially Jolliness Crosby, Clarrisa and Bud.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Middleton Baptist Church, or the Boise Rescue Mission.

Loren Daniel Bryant, age 87, a lifelong resident of Cowgill, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at Liberty Hospital, Liberty, Missouri.
Loren was born the son of D. Ray and Ruby (Daniel) Bryant on November 15, 1927, in Caldwell County, Missouri. Loren served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War. During his military service, he was a Prisoner of War for 30 months and 2 weeks, and he received the Purple Heart. He was united in marriage to Mary Lois Harris on May 28, 1955, in Independence, Missouri. She preceded him in death on June 16, 1991. Loren worked as a Welder for Allis-Chamlers in Independence, Missouri, for 25 years, and he farmed until the time of his death. He was a Minister and was also a member of the Church of Christ Temple Lot. Loren was a member of the American Legion Tweedie-Murray Post #117 of Braymer. He enjoyed reading, farming and anything associated with his grandchildren.
Survivors include one son, John Bryant and wife Chrissy of Kansas City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Joshua, Joseph, Alayna and Andrew; two great grandchildren, Jayden and Caleb; two sisters, Grace Rudd of Independence, Missouri, and Marcia Christian of Franklin, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Lois; and one brother, Gerald Bryant.
Funeral services will be held at the Lindley Pitts Funeral Home, Braymer, Missouri, on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Braymer, Missouri.

Graveside services for Jimmy Roger Bryant were held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, February 9th, at Terrace Park Cemetery in Holtville.

Jim was born September 25, 1932 in Braymer, Missouri. He passed away at the La Jolla, California on February 3, 2006.

Jim was a member and Deacon of the Holtville Primitive Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1951 to 1955. After many years of County service, he retired as the Superintendent of the Imperial County Garage in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Lucie, son-in-law and daughter Kevin and Terri Spangler, grandson Christian Spangler, sister Rowena Wall, brother Sam Bryant, and a host of family and friends.

Charles Owen Bryant was born on October 1, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City Mo. He lived 68 years 279 days. Butch was brought into this world by two wonderful parents, Judge Allen and Mae Dellna Hayes Bryant. He was greeted by three brothers and three sisters, Judge (JW) William, Tom Leon, Billy (Popeye) Hayes, Shirley Jean, Doris Dean , and Joann. Charles was unique in the fact that he was known by various names. Charles was his legal name, his mother called him Butch, some of his brothers and sisters called him Chuck, and he had Uncles and Aunts that called him Charlie. Charles was married to Carol Appleman on Nov. 27 1966, at NKC MO. To this Union two children were born. Gary Wayne Bryant and Christina Marie Bryant Gaar. Butch and Carol were married 34 years till cancer took her in Dec. 2000. Chuck loved to fish, he liked going to Taneycomo to fish for trout. Chuck also liked animals, he always had a dog and or a cat. He enjoyed Abby his St.Bernard who died last year. His cat Sassy who is 18 years old still lives at the home. Butch was a avid ballroom dancer. It was there he met his loving companion Patricia Robinson. They shared the last 10 years of his life, enjoying weekends, trips and cruises. It was a very happy time of life for Chuck and Patricia. Butch loved his cars he liked tinkering with them, washing and waxing them. He liked working in his backyard, he always had good tomato plants. Butch and Carol hosted a 4th of July Bryant family reunion for many years. These will always be remembered by those of us who went. Chuck worked 20 years at Stowe Hardware till it closed. He then worked at Mid Continent Tool and Molding till his death. Charles was a Christian as were both his parents. He had a deep and quiet belief in our Lord Jesus Christ. Charles was preceded in death by his wife Carol Sue, his mother and father Judge Allen and Mae Dellna Hayes, two brothers Judge William Bryant and Billy Hayes Bryant. He is survived by Patricia Robinson of the home, one son Gary Wayne Bryant and his wife Wilma of Branson Mo. One daughter Christina Marie Gaar and husband J.C. of Parkville Mo. One brother Thomas Leon Bryant of Montana and three sisters, Shirley Jean Close of Kansas City, Mo. Doris Dean Remy of Harrisonville Mo. and JoAnne Gillispie of Cameron Mo. Seven grandchildren, and hundreds of other relatives and friends.
Chuck will be missed by all.

Helen Christine Kyker, age 85, of Newport, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a year long sickness on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

She loved her family and loved to travel with her family.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Bart and Hassie Bryant; her husband of 56 years, Bob Kyker; brother, Etheridge Bryant; and nephew, Wilbur Bryant.
