Roy E. Ensminger Sr., 83, of Sunnydale Drive, Town of Niagara, died Thursday, June 18, 1992 in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Wheatfield, he was born August 14, 1908, to William and Anna (Berg) Ensminger. He a factory employment manager at the Columbus McKinnon Co. in Tonawanda for 10 years in the late 1930's and early 40's. Ensminger owned and operated R. E. Ensminger Groceries in Sanborn from 1946-1960. He was later employed as a salesman for Beecher Brothers in Sanborn, retiring in 1971. A charter member of the Sanborn Lions Club, and past noble grand of the Forest Lodge Odd Fellows, he was also president of the Church Council of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of North Tonawanda. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene (Scharlau) Ensminger of Niagara Falls; a son, Roy E. Ensminger Jr. of Pompano Beach, FL; a daughter; Sherry Werth of Sanborn; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Barbara Lois Kesterson and brother of the late Willis Ensminger, Frank Ensminger and Grace Ensminger. The Rev. E. Werner Weinrich conducted services Sunday with burial in the Wheatfield Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Rhoney Funeral, Home, Hoover Rd. Sanborn. Memorials may be made to the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church North Tonawanda.

ENSMINGER - Laverne F. November 15, 2015, passed peacefully at age 93. Predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Lorraine (LaFleur) in 2000 and son, Harold in 2008. Surviving are son Gary (Georgia), Plano, TX, and daughters, Susan (Michael) Slivinski, Brewerton, NY, and Sandra Ensminger, Geneva, NY; grandfather to Alexandra Ensminger, Dallas, TX and Cassandra (Curtis) Barnett, Plano, TX. 'Verne', a WWII Army Veteran, twice Purple Heart recipient, graduated from the University of Buffalo and was the first Athletic Director and Coach at Starpoint High School. He designed their first athletic fields and is on the Starpoint High School "Sports Wall of Fame". He taught 5th grade at Colonel Payne School until retirement. Allen Roy "Smiley" Ensminger of North Tonawanda, NY, passed away on May 11, 2013 at the age of 85. He was born in North Tonawanda on February 26, 1928 to Frank C. and Ida (Zihel) Ensminger. He was the husband of the late Shirley (nee Tuttle) Ensminger. Beloved father of Scott Ensminger. Brother of LaVern F. Ensminger and the late Robert L. Ensminger and Dorthy C. Root. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was the companion of Joyce Freck.
In 1945, he was employed at the Edward Hirtgam farm in Ransomville, NY where he supervised 10 German prisoners of war. He entered the United States Army in March of 1946 and served as a radio and telephone repairman. For a time, he was stationed in Newfoundland. He attained the rank of corporal, was authorized for the World War II Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged in September of 1947. On November 15, 1952, he married Shirley Tuttle and for a time they lived in Tucson, Arizona. Allen was employed at Bell Aerospace in Niagara Falls for 19 years as a rocket technician. He worked on the Agena rocket engine, considered to be one of the most reliable rockets ever built and the Apollo Lunar Module ascent engine, which was responsible for getting the astronauts off the moon. He later worked in the sign shop of the Niagara County Highway Department in Lockport for 15 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Gratwick Hose Fire Company since 1951, a member of the North Tonawanda Firemans Association and a member of the American Legion Wheatfield Post #1451.
Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home, Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd. in North Tonawanda on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home beginning at 8 PM. The Rev. Devie Ellis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, Allen requested that donations be made to the charity of one's choice.
