Grandsons Serve As Pallbearers

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10 o'cock at the Sacred Heart Church in Remington for Levi Mathew, a well known resident to the Wolcott community who passed away Friday morning at the St. Elizabeth hospital, at Lafayette. The services were largely attended.
Pallbearers were grandsons Edward Wagner, Dean Norwood, Melvin Wagner, Robert Deno, Albin Anstette and Gene Deno. Father Leo McHale officiated and burial was made in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Remington. The Foster Funeral Home of Wolcott was in charge of the rites.

WOLCOTT, Dec. 1-Levi Mathew, 74, a retired farmer, died at St. Elizabeth hospital, Lafayette, yesterday. He had been a patient there three weeks.
He had lived in this community more than 70 years and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church, Remington. He was first married to Armelia Propo, who died in 1926, then, on Dec. 26, 1939 he was married to Claire Ribard.
He was the eldest of 11 children and was the father of 11 children.
Surviving with the widow are the 11 sons and daughters, Mrs. John Wagner, Edwin Mathew, Mrs. Lawrence Mathew, Mrs. George Zeno, Mrs. Elmer Zeno, Ryland Mathew, Mrs. Rita Mattes, and Raymond Mathew, of this community, and Mrs. W.N. Norwood, Lason, Ill., Mrs. Ervin Anstett, Earl Park, and Mrs. George Faker, Chalmers; and eight brothers, Ned, Fred, William, Oscar, Arthur, Amos, Clarence and Herman Mathew, of this community, and two sisters, Mrs. Fred Guimond, Manteno, Ill., and Mrs. Felix Delisle, Boronnate, Ill.

Mrs. Nealla M. Wagner
REMINGTON - Mrs. Nealla M. Wagner, 83, of Remington, died at 10:40 a.m.Saturday in Rensselaer Care Center. She had been a patient there three years.
She was born in Wolcott. In 1920 she was married, in Remington, to John M. Wagner, they fared in the Remington and Wolcott areas until his death in 1960. She then moved into Remington.
Mrs. Wagner was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rosary and Altar Society and Wolcott American Legion Auxiliary 294.
Surviving are three sons, Edward Wagner of Battle Ground, Donald Wagner of Remington and Russell Wagner of Rensselaer; four daughters, Mrs. Elman (Lucille) Perkins) and Mrs. William (Helen) Perry, both of Kentland, Mrs. Evelyn Harris of Remington and Mrs. Margaret Limp of Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Also surviving are a brother, Raymond Mathew of Rensselaer; and five sisters, Mrs. Iva Deno of Goodland, Mrs. Mabel Deno of Earl Park, Mrs. Lillian Faker of Kentland, and Ms. Lorene Anstett and Mrs. Rita Mahaffey, both of Ocala, Fla.

Notes:

Ryland Francis Mathew, 42, a polio patient for five months, died last Friday afternoon at the St. Elizabeth hospital, Lafayette. His home was in Wolcott, where he was born. In 1936 he was married to Lloyd Troxel, who formerly lived in Mulberry. While living here she made her home with her aunts, Grace and Mary Troxel.

Survivors in addition to the widow are three daughters and the parents.

Final rites were held Monday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Remington, of which he was a member. Attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Troxel and Grace Troxel of Mulberry and Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Ketcham of Rossville.

Donald V. Wagner, 81

Donald V. Wagner, 81, of Lafayette, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Home Hospital
He was born on April 1, 1924, in Wolcott. On April 14, 1956, he married Beatrice Cyr, and she survives.
He farmed in the Wolcott and Remington areas for 50 years. After retiring, he earned his realty license and sold real estate in the Lafayette area.
Mr. Wagner served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral, and had been a 60-year member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington. He also was a member of Lafayette Board of Realtors, American Legion, Tippecanoe County Conservation, Catholic Order of Foresters and Lafayette Serra Club. He was an avid golfer, working at Purdue Golf Course and most recently at the Municipal Golf Course.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, John Wagner (wife: Pam) of Racine, Wis., Jody Wagner (wife: Kerri) of Lafayette and Albert Wagner (wife: Nancy) of Easton, Conn.; three daughters, Jennifer Kerkes of Indianapolis, Colleen Nordyke (Husband: John) of West Hartford, Conn., and Jolleen Gray (husband: Cliff) o Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and four sisters, Lucille Perkins of Kentland, Helen Perry (husband: Bill) of Kentland, Evelyn Harris of Remington and Margaret Limp of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Helen R. (Wagner) Perry, 92, of Kentland, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020 at Franciscan Health Hospital of Lafayette. She was born on September 3, 1927 in Rensselaer to the late John and Nealla M. (Mathew) Wagner. Helen was a 1945 graduate of Wolcott High School.
Her marriage was to William H. “Bill” Perry on January 23, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington. Bill preceded her in death on January 24, 2020. Helen and Bill celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this year.
Helen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Kentland where she was continually active in the Rosary and Altar Society. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 23 and Red Hats Society of Lafayette.
Soon after high school, Helen moved to Kentland and started work in the accounting department at Edward J. Funk and Sons, where she worked until the birth of her children. Later she began work as a teacher’s aide at Kentland Elementary School, later moving into the position of school secretary there. She then moved to the South Newton School Corporation Office where she held the position of treasurer until she retired in 1994.
Helen enjoyed a challenging crossword puzzle, baking and cooking, and loved time spent with her family. Helen also was proud of her time spent as an election judge in Newton county.
Helen is survived by her two children, Patricia Perry of Palatine, IL and Bill (wife: Teresa) Perry of Elgin, IL; two grandchildren, Robert Mathew Perry and Veronica Mae Perry. She is also survived by a sister, Lucille Perkins of Kentland - as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and other relatives too numerous to mention, but all much loved.
Preceding her in death along with her husband and parents are three brothers (Edward, Donald and Russell Wagner) and two sisters (Evelyn Harris and Margaret Limp).

Evelyn M. Wagner Harris, 80, of Remington, died at 7:10 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2009, at Home Hospital, Lafayette.

She was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Wolcott, to the late John and Nealla Mathew Wagner. A 1946 graduate of Wolcott High School, she was a lifelong resident of the Wolcott/Remington area.

In December 1954, she married Jack Harris in Remington, and he died in March 1975.

Mrs. Harris was a bank manager for Farmer's National Bank of Remington from July 1955 until 1987.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington and the Altar and Rosary Guild.

Surviving are three sisters, Lucille Perkins and Helen Perry (husband: William), both of Kentland, and Margaret Limp of Redondo Beach, Calif.

Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Dula Meiser of Morocco; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Edward, Donald and Russell Wagner.

Melvin M. Wagner, 75
KENTLAND - Melvin Mathew Wagner, 75, of Kentland, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.
He was born July 30, 1926, in Wolcottt, and graduated from Wolcott High School in 1944.
Mr. Wagner was a truck driver for 30 years for Holley Brothers Construction. He also worked as a janitor at the Brook Grade School.
On Act. 20, 1952, he married Marvinee Arnold. She died in 1989.
He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kentland.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Wagner of Greenwood and Chris Wagner of Brook; and a sister, Rita Fox of Sebring, Fla.

Robert E. Deno, 64, resident of Goodland
GOODLAND - Robert E. Deno, 64, died at 11:15 a.m. Friday, April 15, in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been a patient at the hospital since March 22, following an accident in his home. Mr. Deno was born Aug. 17, 1929, in Goodland. His marriage was to Lucile W. Woods, Sept. 9, 1947, in Goodland. Mr. Deno graduated from Goodland High School in 1947. He had owned and operated the Deno Processing Plant in Goodland, retiring in 1964. Following his retirement, he was employed as a dispatcher for the Indiana State Highway Department. Mr. Deno was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and was an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed taxidermy. Surviving are a daughter, Catherine L. Waymore of Ambia; and two sons, Jeffery E. Deno of Goodland, and George R. Deno of Whiteland.

Eugene F. Deno, 88, of Goodland, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at St. Elizabeth East Hospital, Lafayette, IN.

He was born January l2, 1927 in Brook, IN to the late Elmer L. & Mabel L. Matthew Deno. On February 3, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois he married Dolores "Dee" Rose Deno, she preceded him in death December 12, 1998 in Lafayette, IN. Gene retired from farming after 40 years, then worked at Better Coil & Transformer for a few years. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, playing his steel guitar, and doing work search puzzles. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, and the Holy Name Society, he was on the board of the Goodland Athletic Association. South Newton Rebels Booster Club and enjoyed playing Dart Ball.

Gene is survived by 3 daughters, Deb L. Deno, Goodland, IN, Gail M. Niedzialek, (husband Pete), Goodland, IN and Linda L. Deno, Goodland, IN. 4 sons, Randy E.. Deno, (wife, Sue), Lafayette, IN, Dave A. Deno, (wife, Tracey), West Lafayette, IN, Brian K. Deno, (wife Debra), Lafayette, IN and Tim N. Deno, (wife Kelly), Goodland, IN. Grandfather of 20 and Great Grandfather of 12, also 2 sisters, Doreen Gretencord, Fowler, IN, and Lucille Pence, (husband, Jim), Watseka, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and 1 sister, Vera Wetley.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at the Gerts Funeral Home, Goodland, IN, from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm (CDT), with a rosary service at 3:30 PM (CDT). Funeral mass will be on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 10:30 am (EDT) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Fowler, IN, burial will following at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Goodland, IN.

Dorene M. (Deno) Gretencord, 89, of Earl Park, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022 at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus of West Lafayette.

She was born July 17, 1932 in Goodland, IN to the late Elmer Leo Deno and Mabel (Mathew) Deno. Dorene was a graduate of Brook High School.

Her marriage was to Glen Gretencord on December 29, 1951 in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Goodland. He preceded her in death on July 23. 2012. Dorene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Fowler.

Dorene was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in Benton County. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends, playing cards, reading, winter months in Florida, playing piano, and crocheting.

Surviving are her children, Carol (Louis) Salla of Attica, Gary (Teresa) Gretencord of Earl Park, Cheryl (Keith) Borgman of Fowler, and Galen (Connie) Gretencord of Oxford. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death along with her husband and parents are two sisters, one brother, and a grandchild.

Lucille Pence

WATSEKA — Lucille Mae Pence, 83, of Watseka, passed away Tuesday March 3, 2020, at the Iroquois Resident Home in Watseka.

She was born June 21, 1936, in Rensselaer, Indiana, the daughter of Elmer and Mabel (Mathew) Deno. They preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Gene Deno; one sister, Vera Wetli; and one daughter-in-law, Debbie Pence.

Lucille married James “Jim” Pence on May 25, 1957, in Goodland, Indiana. He survives.

Also surviving are four children, Terry (Rhonda) Pence, of Watseka, Lynette (Rich) Moyer, of Watseka, Mike (Phyllis) Pence, of Marshall, and Scott (Kelly) Pence, of Bourbonnais; one sister, Dorene Gretencord, of Lafayette, Indiana; one sister-in-law, Wanda Pence, of Clarksville, Indiana; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Pence was a member of St. Edmund Catholic Church in Watseka. She worked with her husband in the family business, Pence Oil Company, for 40 years; and enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing and camping. Lucille loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka. A funeral Mass followed at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at St. Edmund Catholic Church in Watseka, with the Rev. Michael Powell officiating. Burial follow ed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watseka.

Memorials may be made to Iroquois Memorial Hospice, St. Edmund Catholic Church CCW or Mahlah Comfort Dog Ministries.

Alvin C. Anstett, 84 of Markle passed away at 2:30 am on Friday, March 13, 2015 at Markle Health and Rehabilitation Center. Alvin was a 1949 graduate of Earl Park High School. He had worked as a truck driver for over 33 years, most recently with DTF, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed gardening, motorcycle trips and working on John Deere tractors.

Alvin was born on February 22, 1931 in Fowler, Indiana the son of Ervin T. and Lorene E. (Matthew) Anstett.

He was united in marriage to Frances Estes on June 9, 1951. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2012.

Additional survivors include two sons: Glen (Pamela) Anstett of Uniondale; Michael (Jeanette) Anstett of Ossian; a daughter: Nancy (Robert) Caley of Falcon, CO; two sisters: Darlene A. McCollough of Ocala, FL; Norma J. Gardner of Trenton, FL; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son: Larry Anstett.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 from 2:00 – 8:00 pm at the Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel, 415 N. Lee Street, Markle, Indiana.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel with Father Dale Bauman officiating.

Interment will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Roanoke.

Darlene Anne McCollough, 88, of Ocala, FL, passed away on Friday, November 27, 2020. Darlene was born in Fowler, IN to Ervin and Lorene Anstett. She moved to Ocala in 1960 from Indiana. She was predeceased by her husband Robert McCollough, Sr., and her son Dale McCollough. Darlene is survived by her son Robert McCollough, Jr. and spouse Stacey Granger, daughter Barbara Wood and spouse Richard, daughter in law Debbie McCollough, 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and her sister Norma Gardner.

Jean K. Pearson, 78, of Wolcott, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at her home.
She was born October 21, 1941 in Lafayette to the late Ryland and Lloyd (Troxel) Mathew. She was a graduate of Wolcott High School.
Her marriage was to Norman Pearson on June 12, 1962, he survives. Jean worked at Indiana Ribbon for several years in Wolcott until her retirement. While at home, Jean enjoyed a good book to read.
Surviving along with her husband Norman are their children, Rex, Ryland, Ryan, Jennifer, and Jamie Pearson. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Neil Robert Wagner on October 18, 2023.

He was born on September 16, 1963, in Lafayette, IN to the late Edward F. Wagner and Barbara E. Wagner. On June 11, 1994, Neil married Theresa Vianco at St. Boniface Catholic Church. He attended William Henry Harrison High School and graduated from Purdue University in 1991. After 5 years as the Lafayette Catholic School's Physical Education Teacher, Neil went on to have a successful career as the football coach and Athletic Director at Culver High School before returning home to West Lafayette as Harrison High School's Head Football Coach. He went back to Purdue University to earn his Masters' Degree in Higher Education in 2008 before becoming Lafayette Central Catholic's Assistant Principal. Neil later became Principal in 2015 and cherished his 15 years with the Central Catholic Community.

Along with his wife, survivors include two children; his mother; four sisters; one brother; two sister-in-laws; father-in-law; 19 nieces and nephews; and countless friends. Neil is preceded in death by his father; mother-in-law, Sharon Vianco; and brother-in-law, Daniel Garza.

Neil enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, listening to country music and watching sports. He was often seen on the sidelines of multiple high school sports games, attending Purdue football and basketball games, and on his couch for Sunday night football to cheer on the Chicago Bears. Neil was a friend to all. Knowing no stranger, he thrived in his leadership roles as coach and principal. Best known for his sense of humor, he will be remembered for his punch lines and funny storytelling.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Central Catholic High School, 2410 S 9th St, Lafayette, IN 47909. The service will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 23, 2023 with a praying of the Rosary at 10:15 AM at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 2224 Sacramento Ave, West Lafayette, IN 47906. Burial will follow in Meadow View Cemetery.

Catherine L. "Cathy" Waymire, 70, of Delphi, passed away, surrounded by her family, at 6:25 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital of Lafayette. She was born July 4, 1948 in Goodland, Indiana to the late Robert and Lucile (Woods) Deno.

Cathy was a 1966 graduate of Goodland High School and attended college at Long Beach State. Her marriage was to Ernest W. "Wayne" Waymire on January 15, 1988 in Lafayette; he survives.

Cathy was the office manager for Senesac Fertilizer in Ambia, retiring in 2010. Cathy was a loving wife and mother. She took great pride in the care of their home and lived to take care of her husband Wayne. Cathy and Wayne had 31 beautiful years together that ended way too soon. She lived life to the fullest, cared deeply for others and never had a bad day. She will be greatly missed.

Surviving with her husband Wayne are her children; Bryan Crone, Monet Hardesty (husband: Anthony) of Lafayette, Kelly Davis (husband: Peter) of Arizona, Jesse Crone (wife: Rachel) of Lafayette, Charlie Waymire (wife: Kortney) of Lafayette and Sherry Brown (husband: Justin) of Lafayette; and two brothers, Jeff Deno (wife: Bonnie) of Lebanon and George Deno (partner: Joe) of Indianapolis. Cathy loved spending time with her family especially her 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Jeffery Eugene "Jeff" Deno, 73, of Zionsville, passed away at 11:44am Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born July 28, 1949, in Lafayette, Indiana to Robert and Lucile (Woods) Deno and raised in Goodland, Indiana. Jeff was a 1967 graduate of South Newton High School and served in the United States Marines. His marriage was to Bonnie Wynkoop in 1973. He worked as a maintenance technician for 35 years.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents and sister Cathy.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie, his children, Jeff Jr. (wife: Sarah) and Terri, a brother, George (partner: Joe), and five grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Dale McCollough
Dale A. McCollough passed away Aug. 16, 2015. He was born in Lafayette, Indiana, to Robert and Darlene McCollough, moving to Ocala in 1960, where Dale grew up.
Dale was an elder in the Presbyterian Church of America, serving at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church and as chairman at Seven Rivers Christian School for many years.
He was a graduate of Central Florida Community College. Dale was employed by Duke Energy for more than 30 years.
Dale's hobbies included building houses, carpentry, boating and fishing.
Dale leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Debra; daughter Shannon Hartley (Greg); son, Chad McCollough (Holly); daughter, Kari Ramirez (Diego); grandchildren Alex Hartley, Ana Hartley, Addi Hartley, Ava Hartley, Carter McCollough and Hayden McCollough; parents Robert and Darlene McCollough; brother Robert McCollough (Stacey); and sister, Barbara Wood (Richard).
A memorial service will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church, 4221 W. Gulf-to-Lake Highway, Lecanto, Florida, with burial to follow at 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens, 5050 SW 20th St., Ocala, Florida.
