Grandsons Serve As Pallbearers

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10 o'cock at the Sacred Heart Church in Remington for Levi Mathew, a well known resident to the Wolcott community who passed away Friday morning at the St. Elizabeth hospital, at Lafayette. The services were largely attended.
Pallbearers were grandsons Edward Wagner, Dean Norwood, Melvin Wagner, Robert Deno, Albin Anstette and Gene Deno. Father Leo McHale officiated and burial was made in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Remington. The Foster Funeral Home of Wolcott was in charge of the rites.

WOLCOTT, Dec. 1-Levi Mathew, 74, a retired farmer, died at St. Elizabeth hospital, Lafayette, yesterday. He had been a patient there three weeks.
He had lived in this community more than 70 years and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church, Remington. He was first married to Armelia Propo, who died in 1926, then, on Dec. 26, 1939 he was married to Claire Ribard.
He was the eldest of 11 children and was the father of 11 children.
Surviving with the widow are the 11 sons and daughters, Mrs. John Wagner, Edwin Mathew, Mrs. Lawrence Mathew, Mrs. George Zeno, Mrs. Elmer Zeno, Ryland Mathew, Mrs. Rita Mattes, and Raymond Mathew, of this community, and Mrs. W.N. WOLCOTT - Fred Mathew, 81, retired farmer, died at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Champaign, Ill. He had suffered a heart attack Saturday.
He was born here and spent all his life in this community. He was married to Florence Eck, who died in 1958. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Remington.

Mrs. Wagner was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rosary and Altar Society and Wolcott American Legion Auxiliary 294.

Ryland Francis Mathew, 42, a polio patient for five months, died last Friday afternoon at the St. Elizabeth hospital, Lafayette. His home was in Wolcott, where he was born. In 1936 he was married to Lloyd Troxel, who formerly lived in Mulberry. While living here she made her home with her aunts, Grace and Mary Troxel.

Survivors in addition to the widow are three daughters and the parents.

Final rites were held Monday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Remington, of which he was a member. Attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Troxel and Grace Troxel of Mulberry and Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Ketcham of Rossville.

FR. ARMAND MATHEW O.M.I., 90, entered into the glory of his eternal life on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at his residence in Brownsville, Texas. Fr. Armand would have celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate this year. Fr. Armand was well known and loved in our community having served here in various capacities for quite a number of years.

Visitation and a rosary service were held yesterday in the Auditorium at Immaculate Conception. A Funeral Mass of Christian Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, June 26th in the Auditorium at Immaculate Conception. All local services will conclude after the Mass today and Fr. Mathew will then be transferred to San Antonio where viewing will begin at 6:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28th at the Oblate School of Theology Chapel, 285 Oblate Drive, San Antonio, TX. A second Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, June 29th at 10:00 a.m. at the Oblate Chapel followed by committal services in the Oblate Cemetery located on the grounds of the Oblate School.

Mr. Belisle was a lifetime resident of Kankakee County. He was born Jan 16, 1937 (sic) in St. George, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Felix Belisle. He was a former employee of Uptown Sales and Turner Imports.
He was a member of the Machinsts Union of Kankakee, the Moose Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and St. Teresa;s Holy Name Society.
He was married in Kankakee to the former Magdalene Regnier on Jan. 16, 1937.
He is survived by the widow; daughters, Mrs. Richard A. McClain and Miss Carolyn Belisle, and a son, Brian, all of Kankakee sisters, Mrs. Eugene Benoit, Mrs. Girard Rivard and Mrs. E. G. LaMontagne, all of Bourbonnals; a brother, Leonard of Kankakee, and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Teresa's Church with the Rev. John Skrodenis officiating. Burial will be in a local cemetery.

Leonard E. Belisle, 70, of Bonita Springs, Fla., formerly of Kankalee and Manteno, died at 12:45 a.m. today at St. Mary's Hospital, Kankakee, following a sudden illness.
He was born Sept. 16, 1912, in St. George, to Felix and Mina Mathews Belisle. He was married to the former Darlene Guimond July 12, 1938. She died Aug. 15, 1981.
Mr. Belisle was manager of Uptown Paint and Body Shop for 30 years, until retiring seven years ago. He moved to Manteno upon his retirement and was employed as a bus driver by the Manteno school district. He moved to Florida in October 1982. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Manteno, and the Holy Name Society. He was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus member and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Kankakee Elks Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Myrna Lezotte of Kankakee; one son, David of Williston, N.D.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jill Lezotte of Kankakee, and Jennifer and Christine Belisle of Williston and two sisters, Edna Benoit of Bourbonnais, and Mildred LaMontage of St. George.
One brother, Leroy, and one sister, Marie Rivard, are deceased.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Sunday at Schreffler and Sexton Funeral Home, Manteno Chapel, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald P. Pock oficiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Aldine Anna Guimond was born February 2, 1917, on a farm near Manteno, Illinois. In September 1936, she entered St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Kankakee. Graduating in 1939, she received her license and began practicing as a private duty nurse in the Kankakee area.


On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Eight days later, Aldine was in a recruiting office in Kankakee taking an oath and enrolling in the Navy Nurse Corps.


In February 1942, the Navy sent her to Great Lakes Hospital for training. About a week after arriving, she was commissioned an officer. In January 1943, the Navy transferred Ensign Guimond to full-time duty in a dispensary at Crane Naval Ammunition Depot in central Indiana.


In March 1944, she was reassigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Shoemaker, California, and it was here that she spent the remainder of the war. At Shoemaker she served as a medical ward superintendent with the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade (LTJG, 02). On March 1, 1945, she was promoted to Lieutenant (LT, 03). She had a chance to go to Okinawa, but the war was winding down, and on September 22, 1945, she was released from active duty and returned to Manteno.


Instead of staying in Manteno, Aldine came up to Chicago and got a job at Michael Reese. It was in Chicago that she met Gordon Tell Brown. Employed by Zenith, he was a young G.I. who had returned to the States in November 1945 from fighting in Europe. They met at an American Legion dance. They started dating. After three months, Gordon proposed and Aldine accepted. They were married in Manteno on August 20, 1949.


The newlyweds started making plans together. They used Gordon's G.I. housing benefits to buy a home at 9747 Lonnquist Drive in Franklin Park. Pregnant with her first child Mary, Aldine decided to give up her commission, and in July of 1950, she sent in her letter of resignation to the U. S. Naval Reserve.


She had accomplished much in her young life. There weren't many women in America who had served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

at the Clancy- Gernon Funeral Home, Manteno.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Manteno, by the Rev. Mark Fracaro.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Manteno.

Mr. Guimond died suddenly Thursday (Nov. 27, 1997) at St. Mary's Hospital emergency room.
He was born July 30, 1918 in Manteno, the son of Alfred and Cordelia Mathew Guimond.
Surviving are his wife, the former Catherine J. Boyd, whom he married Aug. 10, 1942 in Tampa, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rodger and Candace Guimond of Ione, Cal. and Mark and Cathy Guimond of Manteno; two daughters, Virginia Guimond and Martha Guimond, both of Dallas, Texas; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Rita Blanchette of Bourbonnais, Aldine and Gordon Brown of Franklin Park and Luella Rockway of Kankakee; and four grandchildren.
Deceased are three sisters, Inez, Helen and Isabelle.
Mr. Guimond was resident engineer for the new phase construction of the Waste Treatment facility in Manteno. He had worked in construction all of his life. He had farmed in the Manteno area.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, served as a French interpreter and helped develop the radar used by air controllers today. He was a member of the Manteno American Legion, VFW and Manteno Apostles Table.
A graduate of Manteno High Schoo, he held the record for the 220 yard dash.
Mr. Guimond was on the County Planning Commission; chariman of the Manteno Planning Committee for more than 20 years; member of the Rock Creek Draining District Board; helped with Matneno Youth Soccer; former member of the Manteno Village Board; member and former president of the Chamber of Commerce; former president of the Manteno P.T.A. He wrote and published the History of Manteno Township and was on the Illinois Diversatech Steering Committee.

AVON – Jeannette Youmans, 91, Avon, formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away Friday (Nov. 10, 2017) at the Springs of Mooresville, Mooresville, Ind.

She was born Feb. 18, 1926, in Wolcott, Ind., the youngest of seven children of Alfred Mathew Jr. and Florence Eck Mathew. She was a 1944 graduate of Wolcott High School; she entered the Mercy School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1947. She was married to the late Austin B. Youmans for 54 years.

Sharing an interest in genealogy, she and her husband were life members of the Charlotte County, Fla., Genealogical Society; as members, they published cemetery books, placing copies in several Florida libraries as well as the Library of Congress. They also published on ancestry book, placing copies in the Illinois and Indiana libraries.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Jeannette was preceded by her brothers, Eugene, George, Edward and Thomas; and her sisters, Sister Esther Mathew and Julia Byron.

She is survived by her children, Austin, Dan (Barbara), Dianne and Jeanne Ann (Michael) Walz; granddaughters, Callie and Erika Youmans; and her nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at Patterson Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation will be held at Freese Funeral Home, 302 E. Grand Ave., St. Joseph, from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday prior to the graveside services.

Leonard E. Mathew, 88, Remington, died on Oct. 25, 2007 at 12:26 a.m. at the White County Memorial Hospital.

He was born on March 20, 1919 in Wolcott to William D. and Elda Granger Mathew.

He graduated from St. Joseph's Prep School in Rensselaer. He farmed north of Wolcott for most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the European Theatre with the 8th Air Corps and the 352nd Fighter Squadron. He was a staff sergeant and crew chief of aircraft maintenance. He had resided in Remington since 1987, moving there from Wolcott. He was a 61-year member of the American Legion Post 280, Tri-County School Board member for 17 years, and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington.

Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Mathew of Wolcott that theirs son, Paul, who has been overseas in the European theatre of war for some time, has be killed in action. The young soldier was familiarly and affectionately called "Joe" by his friends. He attended the Remington Parochial school and graduated from the Wolcott high school. Other information concerning his service have not been received at this writing.

He moved to Lafayette in 1962, where he began Lafayette Beauty Supply which he owned until 1975.

He moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where he was a real estate agent until 1996. He was an avid thoroughbred enthusiast.

Louis H. Mathew, 88, lifelong resident of Wolcott, died at 3 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, in St. Anthony Healthcare, Lafayette. He had been in failing health for the last two years and in St.
Anthony for the last two weeks.

He was born on April 27, 1918, in Wolcott to the late Arthur and Adeline (Bergeron) Mathew. He married Rose Brown on Oct. 12, 1940, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Remington.

A rosary service and visitation were held on Monday at Foster-Clapper Funeral Home, Wolcott. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Remington, with Father Thomas Fox officiating. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Remington.

Bernard Mathew, 93, of Wolcott, died on January 30, 2013, at White Oak Health Campus, of Monticello.

He was born on January 6, 1920, in Wolcott to the late Adeline (Bergeron) Mathew and Arthur Mathew. He was the second oldest of eleven siblings. He married Betty Jane Barnard on February 16, 1942, in Templeton at the Barnard Family Farm, but late in life was divorced. He had lived his entire life on the farm in Wolcott.

Bernie started farming with his dad at a very young age. He was a dairy man and farmed in White County all his life. Up until five years ago, he had helped his son Rex work the fields in the fall. Farming was his life and his purpose.

He followed the markets, weather, and was always giving advice. He was a living almanac and was from old school and proud of it. He enjoyed social hours with his friends and visiting the local truck stop for coffee and making small talk with passing truckers. Bernie was very independent.

He was a member of the Remington Sacred Heart and passed away to be with God in good graces with family close to him.

Surviving are four children, Carol Germek Bergeron, of Alabama, Ron (wife: Betty) Mathew, of Cleghorn, Iowa, Rex (wife: Kathy) Mathew, of Wolcott; daughter-in-law, Barb Mathew, of Monticello; a dear friend, Loma Deno, of Remington; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brother, Izzy, of Brownsburg, Texas; Phil (companion: Connie Jeffers) Mathew, of Chalmers; Orville (wife: Dorothy), of Wolcott; Vernon (wife: Sharon) Mathew, of Fort Wayne; sisters, Alice (husband: Joe) Schillis, of Nashville, Tenn.; Mable Hendryx, of Brookston; Grace (husband: Red) Oilar, of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra; a son, Greg Mathew, MD; brothers, Robert and Louis Mathew; and a sister, Martha Jackson.

Isidore (Izzy) Mathew, 92, of Brownsville, TX; our beloved father was called home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, December 23, 2014.
Izzy was born September 21, 1922, in Wolcott, IN to the late Arthur and Adeline Mathew. He was married to the late Zelda Ruth Wiese, April 7, 1945. Surviving children are Barbara (Bob) Poindexter, Brownsville, TX; Patricia Mathew, Onalaska, WI; Susan (Norman) Greenburg, Onarga, IL; Jim (Marie) Mathew, Aurora, IL, Bruce (Cindy) Mathew, Onalaska, WI; Roger Mathew, Silverthorne, CO. He was a full time farmer in Wolcott, IN till the year 1962 and then continued to farm and worked part time for Moorman's Feed Company, out of Quincy Illinois for 23 years. He also served as President of the National Farmers Organization while working the farm. During his tenure at Moorman's he served as a Territory Sales Representative and District Manager of Sales in North Central Indiana and Regional State Manager of Sales in Northern Illinois while residing in Yorkville, IL. Around 1977, Izzy and family moved back to Rensselaer, IN and then after retiring at age 62 in the year of 1985; they then traveled from Rensselaer, IN to Brownsville, TX for their winters.
Hobbies he enjoyed were fishing, golfing and telling jokes wherever he went. He collected joy from his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and close friends. Izzy always held his brothers and sisters close to him throughout his life. He was always faithful to Our Lord and received the Sacraments of Our Lord every week through his passing. Although he was able to live longer than most of his close friends and some of his siblings he enjoyed life to the fullest and loved others wherever he traveled. During his time in Brownsville he enjoyed the company of his first cousin, the late Father Armand Mathew who made monthly visits to share with him.

Philip A. Mathew, 97, of Wolcott, died on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at White Oaks Health Campus of Monticello. Phil was born on March 13, 1924 in Wolcott to the late Adeline Bergeron and Arthur Mathew. He was a 1942 graduate of Wolcott High School.


Phil was the fourth oldest of eleven siblings. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his service, Phil farmed and had a dairy operation for many years. After farming, he owned a tavern in Remington named Phil and Connie's for 10 years. Phil also worked at Hazelton County Club as a bar attendant and dining room assistant for 10 years.


After retirement, he worked part-time which gave him the opportunity to enjoy his activities of fishing, traveling, gardening, mowing his lawn, and spending time with his friends. One of his favorite things to do was dancing at the VFW with his companion Connie Jeffries and listening to great bands.


Surviving are his children, Mike Mathew of Kingman, IN, John (Tina) Mathew of Logansport, IN, Gina (John) Culver of Chalmers, IN, Paul (Mary Ellen) Mathew of Remington, and Beth (Lonnie) Baker of Lafayette, IN. Three sisters, Alice Shillis of Nashville, TN, Mabel Hendryx of Brookston, and Grace (Robert "Red") Oiler of Monticello. Phil was also blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Preceding him in death are brothers, Louie, Bernie, Izzy, Orville, Robert, and Vernon. Sister, Martha and his best friend and companion, Connie Jeffries.

Orville Joseph Mathew
91, died January 16, 2017, at Brownsburg Meadows Healthcare in Brownsburg, IN.
Orville was born into the family of the late Adeline and Arthur Mathew in Wolcott, Indiana on May 28, 1925. He graduated from Wolcott High School in 1943 and then enlisted in the Army in 1945 where he served in the 504th Paratrooper Infantry 82nd Division during WWII.
Orville married Dorothy Heinzelman on June 6, 1947. Orville was a dairy and crop farmer and also worked for Farm Builders, Inc., Childress Farm Service and Hornbeck Construction throughout his career. He was active in White County politics throughout his life and served as a County Councilman and on various committees. His children and grandchildren gave him great joy throughout his long and productive life. He will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched with his kindness, humor and big heart.
Orville is survived by wife Dorothy of 69 years along with his daughters, Deborah (Robert) Culler, Kathleen (Roger) Pierson, son-in-law Kevin Rosenbaum; his grandchildren, Matthew (Angela) Culler, Hannah (Nathan Sedgewick) Pierson, Alexander (Leanne) Pierson; and, great-grandchildren Laura and Anna Culler, Calder Pierson and Emmory Sedgewick. He is also survived by his brothers, Philip (Connie) Mathew of Chalmers, IN; Vernon (Sharon) Mathew of Fort Wayne, IN; sisters, Alice (Joe) Shillis of Nashville, TN; Mable Hendryx of Brookston, IN; Grace (Robert) Oilar of Monticello, IN; brother-in-law Frank Heinzelman of Wolcott, IN and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives and many dear friends and neighbors. Orville was predeceased by his beloved son, William, sister, Martha Henry, and brothers, Louis, Robert, Bernard and Isidore.

Following an extended illness with Bright's disease, Robert Eugene Mathew, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mathew, residing four miles southwest of Wolcott, passed away Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the family home. He had been unable to attend school since last November, being a member of the Freshman class of the Wolcott high school. He recently returned home from the Mayo clinic at Rochester, Minn.
Surviving besides the parents are the following brothers and sisters, Lewis, Monticello; Bernard, and Isidore, Wolcott; Phillip in the navy in the South Seas; Orville, stationed in a camp in Florida; Alice, Mabel, Martha, Grace and Vernon, at home. His maternal grandmother, residing at Kankakee, Ill., also survives
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at the Sacred Heart church at Remington, with burial in the Sacred Her cemetery.

Martha "Mamaw Brianne" Henry

Martha "Mamaw Brianne" Elizabeth Henry, 66, 1003 Floyd Court, died at 4:15 .m. Tuesday, Feb 16, 1999, in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
She was born March 1, 1932, in Wolcott, the daughter of Arthur and Adeline (Bergeron) Mathew.
She married Donald Robert Jackson on Feb. 13, 1954 in Remington. He preceded her in death Jan. 1, 1974.
On Nov. 15, 1975, she married Dean Henry in Monticello, he survives.
She had been a resident of Howard County since 1954. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had worked for Union Bank and Roselyn Bakery. She was the Boilermaker's Basketball team's biggest little fan for many years. She was a longtime member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church

Virgil Mathew, twenty-two years old, of Wolcott, died Monday evening at seven-thirty o'clock at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, suffering from infantile paralysis, with which he had been ill only a few days.
Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Mathew, a brother, Marvin; three sisters, Rosella, Eileen and Marian, all at home.

Rosella M. Nowviskie, 90, of Logansport died at 4:05 a.m. Saturday November 17, 2007 at Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born August 2, 1917 in Wolcott, Indiana to the late Amos and Lena (Bergeron) Mathew.
On April 22, 1946 she married Eugene F. Nowviskie who preceded her in death on August 3, 1978.

She was a Graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Remington, Indiana.

Rosella was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and a former member of Infant Jesus of Prague Study Club. She volunteered for the Crisis Pregnancy Hotline for 10 years, was a 4-H Leader for 31 years and had also been a RCIA Instructor. Rosella had recently been a resident of Woodbridge Healthcare Center.

She was a Homemaker.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Madonna M. Trout (Neil) of Indianapolis, Indiana and Carolyn L. Baron (Allen) of Baltimore, Maryland, 1 Brother Marvin Mathew (Josephine) of Wolcott, Indiana and 1 Sister, Eileen Peters of Medaryville, Indiana, 1 Granddaughter Regina M. Trout (Jason Barker) of Indianapolis, Indiana and 1 Great Grandson Jason D. Barker of Indianapolis, Indiana.

She was also preceded in death by 1 brother, Virgil Mathew and 1 sister, Marian Mullins.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday November 24, 2007 at All Saints Catholic Church, Logansport.

Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday November 23, 2007 at Marocco Funeral Chapel, 119 E. Market St., Logansport with a Scripture Service and Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Logansport.

She was born May 16, 1920 in Wolcott to the late Amos & Lena (Bergeron) Mathew and was a 1939 graduate of Wolcott High School. She also was a graduate of business college.
Her marriage was to Maurice Peters on November 22, 1945 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1998.
Mrs. Peters worked as a Bookkeeper for Siemens Insurance Agency in Medaryville for many years until retiring.
She was a longtime member of St. Henry Parish in Medaryville and former members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington.
Surviving are two sons Mike Peters of Wabash, IN and Greg Peters (Wife: Amy) of Pittsburgh, PA; a brother, Marvin Mathew of Wolcott and a sister-in-law Catherine Nagele of Sheldon, IL. Eileen loved spending time with her family, especially her 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn M. McGraw passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at 7:20 PM with her children and family by her side. She was born on February 4, 1926 to the late Clarence and Melina (Trongeau) Mathew. She grew up on the farm west of Wolcott with her sisters and brothers during the depression years, having milk cows and raising her chickens. She helped with the war effort during WWII.

After high school, Evelyn married Raymond McGraw on September 10, 1947. Evelyn loved being a farm wife and raising their two children.

Surviving along with her children are two siblings; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three siblings, Vera LaGue, LaVerne Mathew, and Vincent Mathew.

Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington all of her life, loved baking, and will always be remembered for her great coffee cake and strawberry jam. She loved playing games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, working on puzzles, and watching her favorite show Jeopardy while eating Oreo cookies and drinking hot tea.

During the past six months, Evelyn had been under hospice care and received great care and comfort. The family would also like to thank members of PhysioCare Home Hospice. Evelyn will be greatly missed.

Alvin J. Mathew, age 83, of Cecil, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. Alvin was born in Wolcott, Indiana on January 17, 1938, to the late Clarence and Melina (Tourangeau) Mathew. After high school, Alvin served in the United States Army for two years before receiving his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Rita Denton on May 5, 1961, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington, Indiana. Alvin was a dairy farmer for 24 years and later became an over the road truck driver for All States Trucking where he worked for over 34 years before retiring. In his free time Alvin enjoyed watching NASCAR, football, and tractor pulls. He loved to garden and drive his John Deere tractors. Alvin loved having a house filled with family, playing cards and telling long-winded stories.

Kenneth J. Mathew

Services for Kenneth Joseph Mathew, 32, of Modesto will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Franklin & Downs Funeral Home. A Requiem Mass will follow at 9:30 a.m. in the Our Lady of Fatima Roman Cathtolic Church. Burial will be in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Mathew, a Modesto resident five years, died Friday in a Willows hospital after falling about 50 feet while working at the CBK Feed Lot near Butte City. He was the operator of the Matthew Construction Co. of Escalon and had been on the CBK contract two weeks.
Survivors are his widow, Rachel; five children, Keven, Angela, Lesea, Brian and Steven, all of Modesto; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mathew of Indiana; four brothers, Jerry, Charles, Ernie and Richard, all of Indiana, and two sisters, Donna May Mathew of Texas and Rose Mary McAllister of Indiana.
A native of Indiana, he was a Korean War veteran and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
A Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock tomorrow night in the funeral chapel.

Charles Edward "Charlie" Mathew, 81, of Rensselaer, Indiana passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Rensselaer Care Center . He was born in Wolcott, Indiana on September 30, 1934, the son of Herman and Ora (Marquis) Mathew. Charlie was raised in the Wolcott area, graduating from Wolcott High School with the Class of 1952. He was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer and enjoyed time with the extended church family which he came to know over many years. Charlie was a 4th Degree Knight, Knights of Columbus Bishop Dwenger Council #1881, and a member of American Legion Post #29, Moose Lodge #2272 and Fraternal Order of Eagles #2548. He enjoyed a good card game, fishing, attending his grandchildren's events, especially sporting events and the race team, and many hours of crackling walnuts.
Charlie was involved in many business adventures, including owner of the Hoosier Inn Hotel, Mathew Apartments and Rentals, American Breeders Service, Rensselaer Taxi, Northside Auto, and Superior Floor Cleaning. He was a former school bus driver and movie operator for The Palace Theater and at St. Joseph College. He was involved with the Chicago Board of Trade as a commodities broker and investments with Signature Inns and Bardstown Distillery. Charlie also provided over-the-road transportation for many local businesses.
Surviving are his loving children, Roger (Kim) Mathew, Arlene (Jon) Castongia, Kent (Sharon) Mathew, Ave (Jill) Mathew and Marissha Mathew all of Rensselaer, Natalie (Ron) Hageman of Kentucky, and Vanessa (Ron) Sheldon of Remington, Ind.. He was blessed with twenty loving grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two brothers, Gerald (Marilyn) Mathew of Monticello, Ind., and Ernest Mathew of Florida and a sister, Rosemary (Bob) McCallister of Speer, Illinois. Richard was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington, and after moving to West Lafayette, he started attending St. Ann Catholic Church.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed taking trips to Las Vegas where he enjoyed playing poker.
Surviving are three brothers; Gerald Mathew (wife: Marilyn) of Monticello, Charles Mathew of Rensselaer and Ernest Mathew of Avon Park, Florida, and two sisters; Rosemary McCallister (husband: Robert) of Speer, Illinois and Donnamae Mathew of Chicago, Illinois.

Donald V. Wagner, 81, of Lafayette, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Home Hospital
He was born on April 1, 1924, in Wolcott. On April 14, 1956, he married Beatrice Cyr, and she survives.
He farmed in the Wolcott and Remington areas for 50 years. After retiring, he earned his realty license and sold real estate in the Lafayette area.
Mr. Wagner served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Mary Cathedral, and had been a 60-year member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Remington. He also was a member of Lafayette Board of Realtors, American Legion, Tippecanoe County Conservation, Catholic Order of Foresters and Lafayette Serra Club. He was an avid golfer, working at Purdue Golf Course and most recently at the Municipal Golf Course.

Helen R. (Wagner) Perry, 92, of Kentland, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020 at Franciscan Health Hospital of Lafayette. She was born on September 3, 1927 in Rensselaer to the late John and Nealla M. (Mathew) Wagner. Helen was a 1945 graduate of Wolcott High School.
Her marriage was to William H. “Bill” Perry on January 23, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington. Bill preceded her in death on January 24, 2020. Helen and Bill celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this year.
Helen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Kentland where she was continually active in the Rosary and Altar Society. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 23 and Red Hats Society of Lafayette.
Soon after high school, Helen moved to Kentland and started work in the accounting department at Edward J. Funk and Sons, where she worked until the birth of her children. Later she began work as a teacher’s aide at Kentland Elementary School, later moving into the position of school secretary there. She then moved to the South Newton School Corporation Office where she held the position of treasurer until she retired in 1994.
Helen enjoyed a challenging crossword puzzle, baking and cooking, and loved time spent with her family. Helen also was proud of her time spent as an election judge in Newton county.
Helen is survived by her two children, Patricia Perry of Palatine, IL and Bill (wife: Teresa) Perry of Elgin, IL; two grandchildren, Robert Mathew Perry and Veronica Mae Perry. She is also survived by a sister, Lucille Perkins of Kentland - as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and other relatives too numerous to mention, but all much loved.
Preceding her in death along with her husband and parents are three brothers (Edward, Donald and Russell Wagner) and two sisters (Evelyn Harris and Margaret Limp).

Evelyn M. Wagner Harris, 80, of Remington, died at 7:10 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2009, at Home Hospital, Lafayette.

She was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Wolcott, to the late John and Nealla Mathew Wagner. A 1946 graduate of Wolcott High School, she was a lifelong resident of the Wolcott/Remington area.

In December 1954, she married Jack Harris in Remington, and he died in March 1975.

Mrs. Harris was a bank manager for Farmer's National Bank of Remington from July 1955 until 1987.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Remington and the Altar and Rosary Guild.

Surviving are three sisters, Lucille Perkins and Helen Perry (husband: William), both of Kentland, and Margaret Limp of Redondo Beach, Calif.

Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Dula Meiser of Morocco; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Edward, Donald and Russell Wagner.

KENTLAND - Melvin Mathew Wagner, 75, of Kentland, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.
He was born July 30, 1926, in Wolcottt, and graduated from Wolcott High School in 1944.
Mr. Wagner was a truck driver for 30 years for Holley Brothers Construction. He also worked as a janitor at the Brook Grade School.
On Act. 20, 1952, he married Marvinee Arnold. She died in 1989.
He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kentland.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Wagner of Greenwood and Chris Wagner of Brook; and a sister, Rita Fox of Sebring, Fla.

GOODLAND - Robert E. Deno, 64, died at 11:15 a.m. Friday, April 15, in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been a patient at the hospital since March 22, following an accident in his home. Mr. Deno was born Aug. 17, 1929, in Goodland. His marriage was to Lucile W. Woods, Sept. 9, 1947, in Goodland. Mr. Deno graduated from Goodland High School in 1947. He had owned and operated the Deno Processing Plant in Goodland, retiring in 1964. Following his retirement, he was employed as a dispatcher for the Indiana State Highway Department. Mr. Deno was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and was an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed taxidermy. Surviving are a daughter, Catherine L. Waymore of Ambia; and two sons, Jeffery E. Deno of Goodland, and George R. Deno of Whiteland.

He was born January l2, 1927 in Brook, IN to the late Elmer L. & Mabel L. Matthew Deno. On February 3, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois he married Dolores "Dee" Rose Deno, she preceded him in death December 12, 1998 in Lafayette, IN. Gene retired from farming after 40 years, then worked at Better Coil & Transformer for a few years. He enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, playing his steel guitar, and doing work search puzzles. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, and the Holy Name Society, he was on the board of the Goodland Athletic Association. South Newton Rebels Booster Club and enjoyed playing Dart Ball.

Gene is survived by 3 daughters, Deb L. Deno, Goodland, IN, Gail M. Niedzialek, (husband Pete), Goodland, IN and Linda L. Deno, Goodland, IN. 4 sons, Randy E.. She was born July 17, 1932 in Goodland, IN to the late Elmer Leo Deno and Mabel (Mathew) Deno. Dorene was a graduate of Brook High School.

Her marriage was to Glen Gretencord on December 29, 1951 in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Goodland. He preceded her in death on July 23. 2012. Dorene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Fowler.

Dorene was a homemaker and farmed with her husband in Benton County. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends, playing cards, reading, winter months in Florida, playing piano, and crocheting.

Surviving are her children, Carol (Louis) Salla of Attica, Gary (Teresa) Gretencord of Earl Park, Cheryl (Keith) Borgman of Fowler, and Galen (Connie) Gretencord of Oxford. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death along with her husband and parents are two sisters, one brother, and a grandchild.

Lucille Pence

WATSEKA — Lucille Mae Pence, 83, of Watseka, passed away Tuesday March 3, 2020, at the Iroquois Resident Home in Watseka.

She was born June 21, 1936, in Rensselaer, Indiana, the daughter of Elmer and Mabel (Mathew) Deno. They preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Gene Deno; one sister, Vera Wetli; and one daughter-in-law, Debbie Pence.

Lucille married James “Jim” Pence on May 25, 1957, in Goodland, Indiana. He survives.

Also surviving are four children, Terry (Rhonda) Pence, of Watseka, Lynette (Rich) Moyer, of Watseka, Mike (Phyllis) Pence, of Marshall, and Scott (Kelly) Pence, of Bourbonnais; one sister, Dorene Gretencord, of Lafayette, Indiana; one sister-in-law, Wanda Pence, of Clarksville, Indiana; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Pence was a member of St. Edmund Catholic Church in Watseka. She worked with her husband in the family business, Pence Oil Company, for 40 years; and enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing and camping. Lucille loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka. A funeral Mass followed at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at St. Edmund Catholic Church in Watseka, with the Rev. Michael Powell officiating. Burial follow ed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watseka.

Alvin C. Anstett, 84 of Markle passed away at 2:30 am on Friday, March 13, 2015 at Markle Health and Rehabilitation Center. Alvin was a 1949 graduate of Earl Park High School. He had worked as a truck driver for over 33 years, most recently with DTF, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed gardening, motorcycle trips and working on John Deere tractors.

Alvin was born on February 22, 1931 in Fowler, Indiana the son of Ervin T. and Lorene E. (Matthew) Anstett.

He was united in marriage to Frances Estes on June 9, 1951. She preceded him in death on February 19, 2012.

Additional survivors include two sons: Glen (Pamela) Anstett of Uniondale; Michael (Jeanette) Anstett of Ossian; a daughter: Nancy (Robert) Caley of Falcon, CO; two sisters: Darlene A. McCollough of Ocala, FL; Norma J. Gardner of Trenton, FL; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son: Larry Anstett.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 from 2:00 – 8:00 pm at the Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel, 415 N. Lee Street, Markle, Indiana.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel with Father Dale Bauman officiating.

Interment will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Roanoke.

Her marriage was to Norman Pearson on June 12, 1962, he survives. Jean worked at Indiana Ribbon for several years in Wolcott until her retirement. While at home, Jean enjoyed a good book to read.
Surviving along with her husband Norman are their children, Rex, Ryland, Ryan, Jennifer, and Jamie Pearson. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

PK was a 1965 graduate of Wolcott High School and attended Purdue University in Business Administration for two years! Her career path took her to St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, IN., to become the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Student Affairs from 1987-1999.
When the opportunity presented itself to take a job at Western Technical College in La Crosse, WI, she was hired as Administrative Assistant to the President of the college from 1999 until her retirement in 2015.

We would like to say a great thank you to all the wonderful doctors and staff at Mayo Clinic Health system of La Crosse WI.

Gary W. Hendryx, 73, of Brookston, IN, passed away at 12:30 AM on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at his home with his family by his side.

He was born November 2, 1949 in Lafayette, IN to the late Jesse Darnell "JD" Hendryx and Mable (Mathew) Hendryx. Gary was a 1967 graduate of Frontier High School. Gary served in the Army National Guard from 1969 until his honorable discharge in February of 1975. His marriage of 49 years was to Pam Hinsey on July 7, 1973 at the Brookston Federated Church; she survives.

Gary was a long-time member of the Brookston Federated Church and former member of the White County Sheriff's Department Merit Board, the White County Alcohol and Beverage Board and a County Councilman at Large. Gary and his wife were owner/operators of the Top Notch Bar in Brookston for 30 years. Their customers were always welcomed with Gary's larger than life smile and a gentleness that made them feel welcome and comfortable. Gary was proud of the many traditions created and carried on throughout the years. He loved serving others and believed in "paying it forward" by doing acts of kindness for those in need. He and Pam considered their guests family and they treated them that way.

Even in the busiest times, Wednesday lunches and rambunctious Purdue games with his lifelong buddies always ranked high on Gary's priority list. Prior to the Top Notch, Gary worked for Ash Grove Co-Op and Orville Redenbacher Popcorn as a field representative. An avid Purdue Fan, Gary and Pam had season tickets to Purdue Men's Basketball for many years. Gary was also a proud member of the Fast Breakers, a group supporting all things Purdue Basketball and Matt Painter. Most of all, Gary was a loving and devoted husband and father; his two daughters were his pride and joy. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them succeed in all their activities. He was a proud Poppies.

Surviving with his wife Pam are two daughters; mother; four siblings; three grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. Preceding him in death with his father are his father and mother-in-law, Bill and Julie Hinsey; a sister-in-law, Kelli Hendryx; and a niece, Stacy Brown.

Gerald H. Mathew Jr., 47, of Cheyenne died Jan. 9 at United Medical Center-West.

He was born June 1, 1951, in Monticello, Ind.

Mathew was a surveyor with the Wyoming Department of Transportation for 23 years and served in the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by a son, Derick A. Mathew of Cheyenne; a daughter, Natalie C. Mathew of Cheyenne; his parents, Gerald and Marilyn Mathew of Indiana; a brother, Scott Mathew of Indiana; four sisters, Taina Fischer, Tanice Mathew and Teresa Onken, all of Indiana and Trina Zapata of Texas; and his former wife, Kathy Jensen.

Mathew was preceded in death by a daughter, Kellie Marie Garcia.
